[www.keralites.net] YOGA FOR KNEE PAIN

 YOGA FOR ARTHRITIC KNEE PAIN
Arthritis technically means progressive worsening of the functioning of a joint. Commonly seen in people above the age of 50, many people encounter manifestations of arthritis in some form or the other (due degeneration or age related wear and tear). As a person ages, the cartilage present in between bones start to thin, and its load bearing capacity decreases. This causes the entire load of the body to get transferred onto the bone surface, just below the cartilage, leading to the formation of osteophytes (also known as bone spurs).
The most common symptoms of this condition is pain and swelling or stiffness of the knee. Joint inflammations may occur because of poor shock absorption capacity and routine activities that cause minor injuries to the knee joint. The pain could be dull, severe, only in front, all around the knees, at the back of the knee, at the side of the knee or along the thigh or calf. The pain could also be varying in intensity with different activities – climbing up and down the stairs, sitting, getting up, sitting cross legged, walking etc.
What makes a person more susceptible to this condition?
Excess weight: This leads to an earlier wear and tear and degeneration of the joint, due to the excessive load the knees often have to bear.
Heredity: People with a strong family history of osteo-arthritis face a greater chance of developing it earlier in life. Also, this factor is seen to be a very common cause for the onset of arthritis on women.
Injury: Previous or intervening injury to the bones, cartilages, or the ligaments of the knee predisposes a person to an earlier or graver forms of osteo-arthritis.
Poor muscle tone: Existing osteo-arthritis can get worse when the muscles around the knee are not strong enough.
How you can tackle the disease: There are few factors that can make the symptoms of the condition worse and therefore, getting these things under control can go a long way in minimising the progression of the disease. Here are a few things you can do.
Lose weight: While this is far simpler said than done, you must understand that excessive weight puts a great load on the joints leading to it's further degradation.
Exercise regularly: The surrounding muscles should be strengthened by means of adequate exercises. This way there will be better shock absorption, which means lesser chance of joint injury, inflammation and minimal or no symptoms.
People with arthritic knee pain often suffer from severe bouts of pain, here are few handy tips on tiding through these phases:
The knee should be rested. An elastic knee cap should be used whenever there is swelling in the joint.
Medication should be strictly followed to relieve pain, swelling or spasms.
Short wave diathermy (heat therapy), ultrasonics, local heat, local ice application etc. Should be used whenever needed.
Once the pain settles, gentle movements and exercises should be done.
Strictly avoid massaging the joint.
Asanas that help during these stages
Yogendra Nishpanda Bhav: Also known as the no-movement pose is a great way to relax, and beat stress. It also helps beat pain and keep your joints away from any kind of strain.
Steps to do this pose:
Lean against a wall, touching your head to the wall and sit in a relaxed manner with your legs stretched in front of you
Keep a distance of 2-3 feet between your legs
Place your hands gently on your upper thighs with palms facing upwards
Listen to the sound of any vehicle passing by at a distance
Sit in this posture for 5 mins and focus on any distant sound
Savasana: Another relaxing pose, this asana helps to clam the body. It also helps in the recuperation of the muscles and joints after a lot of swelling and pain. Here is how you can do savasana or yog nidra the right way.
Sukhasana: Also known as the easy pose,
sukhasana is meant to help your knee regain flexibility and to beat pain. If you cannot bend your knee, you can try doing this asana while sitting on a chair.
Read more about the steps to perform sukhasana.Hastapadangusht
asana: Also known as the extended hand to big toe pose, this asana helps strengthen the muscles around the knees, therefore beating knee pain. It also helps increase flexibility thereby reducing the chances of injury. For people with arthritic knee pain, this asana should be performed as they lie down. Here is how to do the hastapadangushtasana. In supine poseYastikasana: Yastikasana or the stick pose is a great asana that facilitates maximum stretching of the body. It helps negate the ill effects of sitting in a bad posture for long periods of time, relaxes tense abdominal and pelvic muscles, and offers rest and relaxation, helping you beat fatigue and stress. For people with arthritis this pose should be done with their ankle stretched upwards. Here is how you can do this asana.Asanas to be done during phases when the pain and swelling is minimal
At such times you can try to do simple asanas like padmasana, paryankasana, bhadrasana, ardhamatsy
asana and konasana.Tips to manage arthritis during the sub-acute and chronic phases
Strengthen the musclesWhile the need for medication becomes less, the need for exercises becomes paramount. Stretching the muscles like the hamstrings and calf muscles, may be needed to mobilize the joint and increase its flexibility. Exercises that can strengthen quadriceps are also essential.Treat the symptoms
It is important that the person suffering from osteo-arthritis know that it is self-defeating to expect improvements their medical reports like an X-ray. The truth is that as years progress the joints will degenerate. However, the silver lining here is that this progression does not always correlate clinically. A patient can lead an asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic active life despite the osteo-arthritis. It needs to be well understood and accepted that there is no cure for this condition.

[www.keralites.net] Ladies pls be careful.

Ladies pls be careful.

A woman was taken
by 5 men,
who according to
hospital and police report was raped by a
gang before
being dumped at a
bus
station!

Though she was unable
to remember
the events of the previous evening,
tests conducted
revealed that she had
been raped repeatedly.

There was a
trace of
*Rohypnol* in her blood.

*Rohypnol*,
is presently being
used as a rape drug.

It is actually
 a small sterilization
pill which is now being
used by
rapists to drug their
targets at
parties.

The drug makes the
mind of the
target (would be victim)
go blank
so that she does not remember
anything that transpired and worse still,
the drug sterilizes the victim so that
she doesn't conceive
from the rape
and the rapist need not worry about
having his identity
revealed
later by a paternity
test.

The real bad news is
that the drug's
side effects

ARE NOT TEMPORARY,

they are
PERMANENT.

Any female that
takes it

WILL NEVER BE ABLE
TO CONCEIVE.

The drug is
administered by
dropping it into the
target's drink.

The girl wouldn't
remember a thing the

nothing at all that had
taken place the

will she remember.

Rohypnol, dissolves
rapidly and
easily in drinks, leaving
no taste and
no change in color
which makes it
impossible to detect.

These weasels can
get this drug
from anyone who is in
the vet school or
any medical  university.

It's that easy and
Rohypnol is about to
break out big
on campuses everywhere.

Believe it or not,
there are
even sites on the

people
how to use it.

Girls,

[www.keralites.net] 32 things that damage our skin

32 Things We Do That Damage Our Skin
Your face is your calling card, it's your first impression on others and the first thing you notice in the mirror. Your face can radiate your emotions or be as opaque as a mask. It's often important to our self esteem and general good feeling to keep it young and healthy. However, you should know that there are many things you do that damage the delicate skin on your face – some of them may surprise you!
1. Hairspray – You might use hair spray to keep your hair in place, because a good hairdo makes you look ten times better, but did you know that chemicals in the spray are terrible for your skin? Next time you use it, cover your face, and if you're going to the gym – use a sweatband to prevent it dripping onto your face when you sweat.
2. Chlorine – It keeps the pool clean of bacteria, but it's also very bad for your skin! It dries it out and bleaches it, damaging the melanin in the process. Next time you wash after a swim, make sure to get extra sudsy and soap yourself thoroughly, as chlorine clings to your skin.
3. Coffee – I can hear you saying "On no, not coffee!", and yes, I also thought the same thing, but coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine is the active chemical that keeps you up and perky, but it's also dries out the skin and causes wrinkles. What you can do, however, is to drink plenty of water with your coffee to keep the skin hydrated and consider adding some fruit on the side.
Skin
4. Leaving your makeup on when you go to bed – Other than getting your pillows and sheets all smudgy with leftover mascara, makeup also clogs your pores and traps bacteria on your face – which leads to acne. If you're a Forgetful Franny like me, just keep some makeup wipes by your bed.
5. Popping zits – I hate zits! They're unsightly and sometimes downright painful, but popping them is a really choice when it comes to your skin. When you pop a zit, you actually push more dirt and bacteria into your pores, which leads to more outbreaks. If you really feel the need to pop a zit, wash your face and hands thoroughly, use fresh tissue paper to cover your finger each time, and finish with a disinfectant like rubbing alcohol.
Skin
6. Talking on the phone – Phones are usually covered in bacteria, which leads to bad breakouts along the jawline. Keep your phone clean by wiping it with antibacterial wipes once a day and keep your skin safe!
7. Dehydration – Not necessarily a severe case, but generally not drinking enough water throughout the day. Your skin needs to stay hydrated to maintain its elasticity and softness, so without enough water in your system – your skin suffers. Keep a bottle or a Sippy-cup with you during the day and make sure you drink enough water (9 cups every day).
Skin
8. Skipping a meal – Similar to #7, your skin also needs nutrients and fats to stay healthy. A skipped meal is equal to starving your skin, leaving it without the vitamins and minerals it needs so much. Make sure you eat food rich in vitamin C, E, D and B3, they're what your skin needs the most.
9. Testing too many products – You may want to avoid makeup disasters, so you test products before buying them. It's a great idea, but here's the kicker – what if you get an allergic reaction to a product? The solution: try a small amount on your hand, so if there's a reaction, at least it's not on your face…
10. A long, hot shower – As pleasant as this sounds, frequent long & hot showers are terrible for your skin. They strip away the outer layer of skin, leaving it dry and scaly. If your skin turns red and itchy in the shower, it's your queue to get out.
11. Dirty sunglasses – Like your smartphone, your glasses also gather bacteria throughout the day, and can lead to breakouts where the bridge is, as well as where the arms touch your face and ears. Keep antibacterial wipes and give your glasses a wipe once every day or so.
12. Too much sodium – Sodium absorbs moisture, and when it comes to your skin, that means too much of it can lead to dry, flaky skin. Avoid foods that are rich in salt and keep hydrated.
13. Not getting enough sleep – Getting 8 hours of sleep is not a joke! During your sleep, your skin refreshes itself, clears out pores and replaces the upper layer with fresh skin-cells. If you don't get enough sleep, your skin can get dull and clogged pores can become zits…
Skin14. Unstable weight – If you're dieting infrequently and your weight fluctuates, the effects on your skin can be stretch-marks, reduced elasticity and sagginess.
15. Squinting – Yeah, that's right, squinting is bad for your skin, as it leads to wrinkles around your eyes. If you think your glasses or contacts are not up-to-date, get your eyes checked.
16. Waxing too often – While it's a great way to remove excess hair, it also leaves your skin raw and bumpy. Allow at least 3 weeks between each waxing session, in particular in sensitive areas.
Skin
17. Chemicals in the water – In most places in the world, public water is treated with various chemicals to remove bacteria, fungi and algae from the water. While this makes sure our water is drinkable, these same chemicals also build up on our skin and slowly damage it. Investing in a water filter for your shower is a simple and effective solution.
18. Pillowcases – That's right, pillowcases. They collect dead skin that falls off during our sleep, leading to buildup of bacteria and toxins from the secretion of skin-mites that eat that dead skin. Change your pillowcases regularly and wash them with bleach if possible.
19. Dry lips – If you take care of your face but neglect your lips, you'll regret it. Lips that are constantly dry and chapped age quickly, earning wrinkles much faster. Keep your lips hydrated and nourished by investing in a lip-balm with glycerin, petrolatum & dimethicone.
20. Stress – It's bad for you overall, but when it comes to your face, stress is really bad! It causes to stress-lines that end up as wrinkles, as well as blemishes, dullness, and rashes. Find ways to reduce the stress in your life, like yoga or reading.
21. Exfoliating too much – Exfoliating once in a while is very good for your skin. It clears out dead, dry cells and adds a healthy shine to your face. Too much exfoliation, however, is bad for your skin. It removes the natural oils the skin needs, taking away from its shine.
Skin
22. Frowning – Like stress and squinting, frowning causes wrinkles. Give your face a rest and prevent (or at least – delay) the appearance of these unwanted wrinkles.
23. Too much sugar – Large quantities of sugar damage the collagen in your skin. Collagen is what gives your skin its elasticity, and when it's damaged, your skin will end up sagging. Consider substituting candy and chocolate with fruits.
24. Dry Cleaning – The chemicals in dry-cleaning are bad for your skin, so if you get your clothes dry-cleaned often, remove the plastic from them as soon as you can to ensure they don't soak up those harmful chemicals.
25. Not enough exercise – A good exercise cleans the body of toxins by perspiring them out, and the increased blood flow gives your skin a healthy glow. Not exercising enough can increase the likeliness of age-spots.
26. Too much air-conditioning – Air conditioners strip the humidity from the air, leaving it dry. This also happens to your skin in such dry conditions, so consider turning down the AC and moisturizing your skin.
Skin
27. Alcohol – Sorry, but consuming too much alcohol will dehydrate your skin. Dry skin will get wrinkles faster and will look dull and flaky.
28. Forgetting sunscreen – You might think that it's not terrible if you forget to apply sunscreen from time to time, but the effects, while not immediately apparent, are devastating for your skin.
29. Too much time in the sauna – While the increased sweating is good for cleansing your body from toxins, the excess heat also breaks down collagen, leading to sagging skin, so consider minimizing your trips to the Sauna.
30. Secondhand smoking – We all know that smoking is bad for your skin (amongst other things), and secondhand smoking is just as bad. The chemicals in tobacco cause the skin to sag and increase the formation of wrinkles.
Skin
31. Constant tweezing – Keeping your face neat is a good habit, tweezing can lead to serious skin damage. If you don't wash your face before and make sure to disinfect the tweezers, you can cause skin infections and zits. Furthermore, to make the process easier, soften your skin with a hot towel and once you're done, sooth the skin with aloe and keep it clean.
32. Too much makeup – Makeup blocks your pores, leading to premature aging and facial breakouts. Reduce the amount of makeup you apply and try to find makeup that "breaths".

[www.keralites.net] SILVER SWEETS...VARAKH IS NON VEG

Silver sweets - VARAKH is NON-VEG
I don't if it's true or not.. But that was in my mail-box.. Thought to share with you friends....
In India, by law, every food item has to have a green dot on it, if it is vegetarian - and
a maroon dot, if it is non-vegetarian. If a manufacturer is found to be cheating by
mislabelling his product, the sentence is many years in jail.
So, how have the mithai (sweets) people not been arrested so far? Milk has been treated as
vegetarian to appease the powerful dairy lobby, but the silver foil or 'varakh' on each
mithai cannot by any stretch of imagination be considered vegetarian.
"Beauty Without Cruelty", a Pune-based NGO that investigates into product ingredients, has produced
a remarkable booklet on the varakh industry. Here is their report on how it is made.
The varakh-makers select animals at the slaughterhouse. Each animal is
felt for the softness of its skin before it is killed. This means that a
substantial number of goat, sheep and cattle are killed specifically for the industry.
Their skins are soaked in filthy, infested vats for 12 days to dehair them.
Then, workers peel away the epidermal layer, which they call jhilli, just under the top
layer of the skin in a single piece. These layers are soaked for 30 minutes in another
decoction to soften them and left to dry on wooden boards. Once these are dry, the workers
cut out square pieces 19 cm by 15 cm. These pieces are made into pouches called auzaar and
stacked into booklets. Each booklet has a cover of thick lamb suede called khol.
Thin strips of silver called alagaa are placed inside the pouches.
Workers now hit the booklet with wooden mallets for three hours to beat the silver inside
into the ultra-thin varakh of a thickness less than one micron called '999'.
This varakh is then sent to sweet shops.
Here are the statistics that you should know.
An animal's skin can make 20-25 pieces/pouches only.
Each booklet has 360 pouches. One booklet is used to make
30,000 varakh pieces - less than the daily supply of a single big mithai shop.
About 12,500 animals are killed for one kg of varakh. Every year, 30,000 kg of varakh (30 tonnes)
are eaten on mithai. 2.5 crore booklets are made by varakh companies that keep their
slaughterhouse connection secret. But the truth is that not only is this industry killing
animals furiously, much of the animal tissue that the booklet is made of remains in the varakh.
Each Jain knows in his heart that varakh is non-vegetarian. But they
still use these dreadful items of mass destruction to decorate the idols of Jain
tirthankars. How amazing that the idols of those that preached and practised strict non-violence to all
creatures should now be covered with slaughterhouse derived silver foils. Jains are the biggest buyers of
the varakh industry. Many try to bluff themselves by saying that the varakh is machine-made
"Beauty Without Cruelty" has done a thorough investigation and found thatthere is
not a single machine-made varakh piece in this country (or even the world).
On the web, there is one letter from a person, Jalandhra, claiming that he has a company which
has "fully automatic machines manufactured with German collaboration to beat silver pieces in between
a special Indian manufactured paper in a hygienic and controlled atmosphere run round the clock by
qualified Engineers and experienced R&D team". Initially,
we were importing the special paper from Germany.
But when followed this up, no factory of the given name, or even address, was not found.
The production of varakh is done mainly in north India: Patna, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur and
Gaya (which is a Buddhist holy centre), in Bihar; Kanpur, Meerut and Varanasi (the holy city of Hindus) in
Uttar Pradesh; and Jaipur, Indore, Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The booklets come
to them from the slaughterhouses of Delhi, Lucknow, Agra and Ratlam.
Not only is varakh non-vegetarian, it is also very bad for your body - whether you are vegetarian or not.
The silver cannot be digested; therefore, there are no benefits from its consumption . A study done
in November 2013 by the Industrial Toxicology Research Center in Lucknow on varakh says that
the silver foil available in the market has toxic and carcinogenic metals in the
thin silver foil, nickel, lead, chromium and cadmium.
Damages Body also
Over half of the analysed silver foils had lower silver purity than the
99.9 per cent purity stipulated by the prevention of food adulteration act of India.
When such foil enters into the body, it releases heavy metals that can lead to cancer. The report
also details the unhygienic conditions in which workers put silver in
small leather bags and beat it into foil in filthy shops.
It is time we refused varakh-covered mithai, fruit or paan. Mithai shops should be taken to court for
not labelling their products non-vegetarian, before selling them. I request everyone reading this article to
strictly avoid the sweets that have a silver work on them. They are purely Non - Vegetarian.
ISKCON also confirms their non - vegetarian nature.
