Sunshine Story: Cobbler's daughter ( Sayali Mhaishune ) wins gold running barefoot - It was a normal Monday, laden with work for Mangesh, who was busy digging into torn footwear and polishing dull shoes when mid-day caught up with him last evening. His 14-year-old younger daughter had just won her maiden U-17 gold medal in the 3,000 m event a few hours ago and he could not stop smiling as he discussed her feat and rued his inability to witness it.

Mangesh (46), who earns between R3,000 to 10,000 a month, and cannot afford to keep his shop shut even for a day.

"Whatever little I earn goes into my two daughters' education. My elder daughter Mayuri (17) is doing a diploma in Information Technology, while my wife Savita keeps ill frequently. Sayali though, has made me very proud today," said the elated father with a broad smile.

Sayali's feet laid bare the truth of her poverty. "My father can't afford to buy me spikes, so I'm used to training barefoot at the Naigaon Police Ground track," said young Sayali. A pair of running spikes cost anywhere between Rs 500-2,000. Yesterday's synthetic surface at the PDP however, posed a painful challenge. "As I practice on mud, running on this rough synthetic surface was very tough. The track was very hot too as our races were around noon. Around the halfway mark, I was dehydrated, but somehow kept running. I didn't expect to win a medal, my aim was simply to finish the race. Spikes would have definitely helped me run faster here," said the Std IX student, who also participates in prize money-yielding mini marathons across the state in a bid to reduce her parents' financial burden.

I can't afford an expensive gift, but I'll take home her favourite chocolates," assured Mangesh, even as he returned to polish a pair of old, black shoes. His daughter too meanwhile, continues to polish her athletic skills in the hope of sparkling for her country one day.

I am an indian by birth and i use to stay abord morethen 20 years i dont buy the meat from local markets and from where ever it's has exported due to not genuine befellow, and I hope that most of the keralites they don't like meats other then befellow , even the major community . According to my experience some indian states belive cows as god or gives her gods credibility.pepoles of such states avoid or ignore to keep frindly mingles with other communities those who believes cows as above, thefore I kindly request you pepole specially our Malayali friends that we are totally difrent then other states we have good and strong historical and cultural knowledge then the other states and we do not fight each other for this kind of argues that can spoil keralites names we are the strogest states we earn many things then other states by oy ours stand by staying one union whether it's Hindu or Muslim , Cristian

Andhra Pradesh Telangana
Slaughter of cows, calves prohibited. Bulls, bullocks can be killed against "fit-for-slaughter" certificate, issued if animals can no longer be used for breeding; draught/agricultural operations. Violators face 6 months jail and/or Rs 1,000 fine.
Assam
Cow slaughter banned except on issue of 'fit-for-slaughter' certificate, at designated places.
Bihar

Chandigarh
Killing a cow, storing/serving/eating beef banned; eating meat of buffalo, bullock, ox also banned.
Chhattisgarh
Slaughter of cow, buffalo, bull, bullock, calf, and possession of their meat banned. Transport, export to other states for slaughter also banned; attracts same punishment of 7 years' jail, fine up to Rs 50,000.
Delhi
Slaughter of "agricultural cattle" — cow, calf, bull, bullock — and "possession of flesh", even if they are killed outside Delhi, banned. Buffaloes are not covered.
Gujarat
Slaughter of cow, calf, bull and bullock; transport, sale of their meat banned. Punishment: Rs 50,000 fine, up to 7 years' jail. Ban does not include buffaloes.
Haryana
As per a 2015 law, "cow", which includes bull, bullock, ox, heifer, calf, and disabled/diseased/barren cows, can't be killed. Punishment: 3-10 years jail, fine up to Rs 1 lakh. Sale of canned beef and beef products, and export of cows for slaughter banned.
Himachal Pradesh
Slaughter of all bovines punishable by 5 years' jail. Killing allowed in the interest of research, or if animal has contagious disease.
Jammu Kashmir
Slaughter of cow and its progeny punishable by up to 10 years' jail. Possession of "flesh of any slaughtered animal(s)" punishable by a year; killing of "he or she buffalo" punishable with fine five times the animal's price.
Jharkhand
Slaughter of cows and oxen; possession, consumption of their meat, banned. Violators face up to 10 years' jail and/or Rs 10,000 fine.
Karnataka
Cows can be slaughtered if old or diseased. Possession not a crime. Bill proposed by BJP in 2010 made slaughter punishable by 7 years' jail and Rs 1 lakh fine, but it did not become law.
Kerala
No restrictions.
Madhya Pradesh
Slaughter of cow, progeny banned. Penalty raised to 7 years' jail in 2012, burden of proof on accused. Buffaloes can be killed.
Maharashtra
Slaughter, consumption of meat of cow, bull, bullock banned since March 2015 after revision of existing law. 5 years' jail and/or Rs 10,000 fine. Slaughter of buffaloes allowed.
Mizoram
No restrictions.
Odisha
2 years' jail, Rs 1,000 fine for cow slaughter. Old bulls, bullocks can be killed on fit-for-slaughter certificate; cow if it suffers from contagious disease.
Other Northeast
No ban in Arunachal, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim. In Manipur, Maharaja in 1939 decreed prosecution for cow slaughter, but beef consumed widely.
Punjab
"Beef" doesn't include imported beef; "cow" includes bulls, bullocks, oxen, heifer, calves. Slaughter allowed for export, with government permit.
Rajasthan
Slaughter of "cow, calf, heifer, bull or bullock" prohibited; possession, transport of their flesh prohibited. 10 years' imprisonment and/or Rs 10,000 fine.
Tamil Nadu
Cow, calf slaughter banned; up to 3 years' jail and/or Rs 1,000 fine. Beef consumption and slaughter of economically worthless animals allowed.
Uttar Pradesh
Slaughter of cow, bullock, ox banned. Can't store or eat beef. 7 years' jail and/or Rs 10,000 fine. Can import in sealed containers, to be served to foreigners. Buffaloes can be killed.
West Bengal
No restrictions.
NO RESTRICTIONS
Kerala, Bengal and Northeastern states of Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland. Beef consumed widely.
Jail terms 10 yrs for cow slaughter in Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand and Rajasthan. Punishment up to varying terms in jail in other states.
Hefty fine 1 lakh in Haryana, and Rs 50,000 in Chhattisgarh and Gujarat. Range of smaller fines for slaughter and related crimes in other states.
