Are YOU drinking enough water?

It's shaping up to be another summer of record-breaking high temperatures and the news media is beginning to sound like a broken record, too – over and over again we're reminded to keep ourselves well hydrated by drinking plenty of water. But it's an important message – not just during a heat wave, but also throughout the year because water serves so many critical functions in the body.

I'm sure you will agree that there's nothing more refreshing than a nice ice-cold glass of water. Despite this, most of us don't drink enough water on a daily basis. By depriving ourselves of the world's most natural resource, we are continuously damaging our bodies. If you experience any of the following, you can improve your situation with a refreshing glass of water.

1. Your Mouth is Dry

This seems pretty obvious, but the ramifications might not be so. Of course, any time you feel that sticky, nasty feeling in your mouth, you'd obviously reach for some sort of liquid. But sugary drinks are only a temporary solution to a larger problem. Drinking water lubricates the mucus membranes in your mouth and throat, which will continue to keep your mouth moist with saliva long after that first sip.

2. Your Skin is Dry

Your skin is your body's largest organ, so of course it needs to stay hydrated. In fact, dry skin is one of the earliest signs of full-on dehydration, which can lead to much larger problems. A lack of water means a lack of sweat, which leads to a body's inability to wash away excess dirt and oil accumulated throughout the day. If you want to stave off breakouts, your first recourse should be to drink more water.

3. You're Overly Thirsty

We went over dry mouth already, but thirst goes beyond a desert-like tongue. Anyone who's ever had a hangover can tell you that, upon waking up, your body just can't get enough water. Alcohol dehydrates the entire body, and drinking water sends "YES PLEASE!" signals to the brain until your fluid levels get back to baseline. Listen to what your body is telling you; it knows what it's talking about!

4. Your Eyes Are Dry

By now it should be clear that drinking water affects more than just your mouth and throat. A lack of water intake leads to dry, bloodshot eyes (again, think of that last pounding hangover). Without water in the body, your tear ducts dry up. If you're thinking "So what if I can't cry?" realize that this could cause much more harm to your eyes, especially if you wear contacts on a daily basis.

5. You Experience Joint Pain

Our cartilage and spinal discs are made up of about 80% water. This is an absolute necessity to keep our bones from grinding against each other with every step we take. By keeping your body hydrated, you ensure that your joints can absorb the shock of sudden movements, such as running, jumping, or falling awkwardly.

6. Your Muscle Mass Decreases

Your muscles, also, are comprised mostly of water. Obviously, less water in the body means less muscle mass. Drinking water before, during, and after a workout not only keeps you hydrated and comfortable, it also brings water to the right places in your body, and decreases the chance of developing inflammation and soreness related to exercise and weightlifting.

7. You Stay Sick Longer

Drinking water allows your body to continuously flush out toxins. Your organs work to filter our certain waste products like a machine, but if you don't fuel the machine with water, it cannot work properly. What ends up happening in a dehydrated body is organs start to pull water from stored areas like your blood, which leads to a whole new set of problems.

8. You Feel Fatigued and Lethargic

As we just mentioned, when a body is dehydrated it "borrows" water from your blood. A lack of properly hydrated blood leads to a lack of oxygen being brought throughout the body. Of course, a lack of oxygen leads to sleepiness and outright fatigue. A lack of stamina means you'll start to experience that 2PM crash earlier and earlier in your day (and remember, coffee won't help in the long run).

9. You Experience Hunger Pangs

When you're dehydrated, your body might start to think it needs some food. This happens throughout the day, and overnight when you wake up craving that midnight snack. However, eating food creates more work for your body, whereas drinking water purifies and your organs and supplies it with the fuel it needs to go through the other processes a body goes through.

10. You Experience Digestive Problems

We spoke before about the mucus in our mouth and throat, and how keeping hydrated allows the membrane to function correctly. This also applies to the entire digestive system. Without proper hydration, the amount and strength of mucus in the stomach lessens, allowing stomach acid to do some major damage to your insides. This leads to what we commonly refer to as heartburn and indigestion.

11. You Experience Constipation

Staying hydrated helps lubricate the digestive system. During the process of dehydration, the colon uses up the water that would have been used by the intestines in the next step of the digestive process. Without going into too much detail, I'll let you figure out what a lack of lubricant in the intestines leads to.

12. You Experience Reduced Urination

Believe it or not, if you're not taking a trip to the restroom 4-7 times a day, you're probably not drinking enough water. And when you do go #1, it should be a light yellow or clear color. If it's a darker yellow, your body is telling you it's lacking proper hydration. In extreme cases, dehydration can lead to urinary tract infections, in which case you should consult a doctor right away.

13. You Experience Premature Aging

The amount of water our bodies retain naturally decreases as we age. Obviously, what this means is that, as we get older, we should consciously increase our water intake. While premature aging is more evident on the outside, the damage it does to our insides will ultimately be felt over time. To decrease the risk of running your body raw, it's important to continue to drink water throughout your lifetime.

14. You're reading this and have got this far

If you clicked on this article, chances are you thought to yourself "I don't think I drink enough water." The European Food Safety Authority and many others recommend that women should drink about 1.6 litres of fluid and men should drink about 2.0 litres of fluid per day. That's about eight glasses of 200ml each for a woman, and 10 glasses of 200ml each for a man. However, the amount a person needs to drink to avoid getting dehydrated will vary depending on a range of factors, including their size, the temperature and how active they are. So, for example, if you're exercising hard in hot weather you'll need to drink more.

All drinks count, including hot drinks such as tea and coffee, but water, milk and fruit juices are the healthiest. It is best to avoid alcoholic drinks.

Also, try to avoid sugary, soft and fizzy drinks that can be high in added sugars. These can be high in calories and bad for teeth.

20 Ways to Simplify Your Life...

Let's face it, life has become way too compilated. Between spending huge parts of our time at work, paying our taxes, making sure everything in the house is in order, fixing our cars, making sure our kids are ok, working for their future and dealing with the ever increasing demands of technology from us, sometimes we just feel like screaming: "Enough! Leave me alone!".
But life doesn't uncomplicate itself, we have to do that, and so, with the goal in mind of having a simpler life, you can have it without moving to some remote countryside and mliking cows. Here's how:

1. Get up 20 mintues earlier: If you find your morning tight on time, try to go to bed a littler earlier and get up 20-30 minutes before your usual time. You'll be surprised how this little addition of time can start your whole day better.

2. Be 10 minutes early for meetings: It's hard to be late when you're planning to get there early, and it'll some of the pressure off. You'll also have time to smooth out your thoughts and think about what you'd like to say.

3. One thing at a time: Don't be fooled by those around you who brag they can do it all. Everyone has a problem concentrating on several tasks at once, or even pay attention to one while you're thinking of another one. Try to put your entire focus on the most urgent issue. Finish it and then move on to the next. You'll be surprised how much faster and more efficient you are at problem solving when you're solving one problem at a time.

4. Ask yourselves some questions: Stop yourselves from time to time and ask: "Am I making things more complicated?" and "how can I simplify the problem?". Sometimes we miss simple solutions because we don't stop to look around us.

5. Ask yourselves: "Will this still matter in five years?", most of the time, it won't even matter in 5 months or 5 weeks. If you find yourselves facing a mountain, maybe check it's not a mole hill.

6. Write down everything: There is no memory that doesn't 'leak' from time to time. The few minutes you spend writing things down will be worth having those things out of your head and memory, resulting in less pressure.

7. Remember that there is something greater than yourselves: We don't know everything, nor are we always right. There are always going to be causes bigger than ourselves.

8. Enjoy the simple things: Sometimes we need to stop, shut our eyes tightly, and then open them again and truly FEEL the moment we're in, the way it looks, the way it sounds, feels, smeels and tastes. This is the meaning of living in the moment, and enjoying things that are so basic we hardly really pay them attention anymore.

9. Drink a glass of water: Water is the essence of life, and sometimes we might be better off drinking than binging on junk food that will just increase our anxious feelings.

10. Kindness is a blessing returned: Be kind to others. One day you may be old, sick and in need of kindness yourselves, knowing that you were kind to others and that they want what's best for you is a load off, and will reduce the fear you feel about the future.

11. Simplify your life by simplifying your home: A cluttered house is a cluttered mind, some say. Try and keep a place for everything in your house, keep it clean and tidy. It may seem unrelated, but a clean house makes us feel good about ourselves and helps us concentrate on what's important.

12. Stop and find the roses: Instead of speeding from thing to thing, try taking some extra time with certain tasks, relationships, work and personal projects. That extra time will give you confidence and help you discover things you may miss when you're rushing about.

13. Spend some time with simpler folk: Spending time with those that lead a simple life will help you simplify your own. Their slower pace and calm will leak into your own life, and you'll learn some of their tricks for simpler living.

14. Ask advie from those who have been there: When you encounter a problem, remember that most of them are not new, they have been challenging others as well. Turn to those who have been there, and ask for their advice. Sometimes it takes a village to get through life.

15. Forget about perfection: Don't try to do everything perfectly, you'll probably not succeed. Let go of the illusion of perfection and focus on what you have that is good and true.

16. Take a breath of fresh air a few times a day: Like a smoker on smoke breaks, take breaks to go out and get some fresh air. You'll be surprised how quickly those anxious thoughts can die down while you take a minute to disconnect from anxiety and reconnect with the world around you.

17. Take 30 minutes on the weeknd to plan your week:Weekends are a great time to relax and take a little time to plan out what  you are going to do this week. Make a list, it'll help you remember and you'll feel more calm dealing with the coming week's challenges.

18. Ask people around you more questions: Sometimes, the things that make us anxious could be solved with a simple question. Don't be afraid to get answers you may not want to hear - in the long run, it'll help to know.

19. Take some time to be lazy: If you can simplify your lives a bit, you may find out you have some spare time. Take some of it to relax, you deserve a little laziness.

20. Remember life is longer than you think: You may change your mind a couple of times throughout, you may grow as a person and want different things, love different people. Accept this fact and you'll see how things so bothering you as much.

Hands that serve are Holier than Lips that Pray

Do you have high blood pressure? Are you planning to shake off those extra fats? Are you under stress or fatigue? Well, all these ailments, concerns and a lot more can be addressed by watermelon. Yes, you read it right, watermelon. Watermelon or Citrullus lanatus is a trailing plant that is thought to have originated from Africa
It comprises about 91% water, 6 % sugar and 3% of other minerals. Naturally, it is packed with vitamin C, beta-carotene, riboflavin, niacin, panthothenic acid, choline, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, phosphorous, sodium, zinc, lycopene and a host of the vitamins and minerals. Apparently, a watermelon is all you need to have a healthier body.
Watermelon is highly on demand especially on summer for its invigorating properties. A watermelon juice definitely is the perfect piece to beat the summer heat, considering that it contains 97% water and sugar. It should be noted as well that a watermelon helps you get rid of those extra pounds off, contrary to fears that eating the fruit or drinking a watermelon juice could result to gaining weight due to its sugar content. Actually, it's not the same sugar that could aggravate diabetes; a watermelon contains natural sugar good for the body. What's more? Drinking a watermelon juice could lead you to the following health benefits:
Health Benefit #1 - A watermelon, especially red watermelon helps an individual to avert many diseases. Why? It contains lycopene in high measure. Basically, a lycopene is an antioxidant that helps to defuse "free radicals" that could potentially damage tissues and organs of the body. Moreover, free radicals augment inflammation and cholesterol in blood vessels, which then could lead to heart attack and stroke. Now with a watermelon juice, the risk of having or developing the aforementioned diseases could be mitigated.
Health Benefit #2 - A glass of watermelon juice everyday could reduce the risk of acquiring or worsening diseases such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and colon cancer. Furthermore, since a watermelon is rich in antioxidants, it can preempt the development of kidney stones.
Health Benefit #3 - A watermelon is vital to obtain a low fat, low cholesterol diet. In fact, a glass of watermelon juice is enough or is considered a complete meal already. Watermelon also contains protein in addition to water, sugar and other minerals i.e., a balanced diet in every sense.
Health Benefit #4 - As previously mentioned, a watermelon is packed with potassium that essentially helps normalize blood pressure. In addition to that, it lessens the risk of developing cardiac arrest and apparently, potassium strengthens the body.
Health Benefit #5 - It goes without saying that a watermelon or watermelon juice is an exceptional source of energy, since it is loaded with vitamin B and of course, sugar as well as water. As a matter of fact, watermelon is the most preferred fruit by athletes or even tri-athletes for its rejuvenating properties. To top that, it is a fine thirst quencher. Normally, athletes eat a watermelon or drink a glass of watermelon juice a day before undergoing strenuous activities, taking into account that it boosts their physical as well as mental condition.
Health Benefit #6 - It helps prevent bone loss and the like. A watermelon is rich in calcium which aids in the preservation and strengthening of bone structures. Moreover, it reduces the risk of age-related eyesight deterioration that could potentially lead to loss of foresight, especially to elders.
Health Benefit #7 - Watermelon's seeds are loaded with high quantities of iron. So, try to crush the seeds and add the same to your glass of watermelon juice. Needless to emphasize, it is an ideal agent to fight off and/or prevent iron-deficiency anemia and related diseases.
Health Benefit #8 - A piece of watermelon addresses erectile dysfunction in one way or another. Although, research and studies have not yet formally concluded and expounded the reasons behind this ability of watermelon, many individuals have verified, experienced and testified about this miraculous curative.

How to Prepare a Glass of Watermelon Juice?

Considering all the benefits a watermelon brings forth, it is therefore a must to have one on the table every day. Nevertheless, you can always be creative when it comes to serving it for a more delightful eating or drinking experience such as preparing a watermelon salad or watermelon juice. Preparing a watermelon juice is very easy by just following the simple steps enumerated below:
A. Chop the watermelon into pieces and place them in a bowl.
B. Put those watermelon pieces into a juicer or crusher. It is advisable to include the seeds in it as they are a good source of iron, zinc and phosphorous. Don't have a juicer? Look through our juicer reviews to find the perfect one for your household.
C. You may mix or pour on milk to make the watermelon juice tastier. Basically, it is not necessary to add sugar in the juice considering that it has natural sugars that makes it sweet.
A watermelon juice is not only nutritious, it is at the same time a perfect drink to beat the heat of summer.

Automatic Updating of Excel Tables in PowerPoint Slides

If you have PowerPoint slides that report regularly updated financial or numeric data that comes from an Excel spreadsheet, you can save a lot of time by linking the data instead of retyping it. This technique also allows you to secure the data from others changing it and prevents accidental transposition errors. This article shows you the step by step procedure for importing linked data from an Excel spreadsheet into a PowerPoint slide (works in PowerPoint 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013).

Step 1: Create the table in Excel

The first step is to create the table of data in Excel so that it looks exactly the way you will want it to look on the slide, including titles, row labels, column labels, gridlines, text and background colors and text formatting.

Step 2: Copy the table in Excel

Using your mouse or arrow keys, highlight the table of data in Excel. On the Home ribbon, click the Copy button to copy the data table to the Windows Clipboard.

Step 3: Prepare the slide in PowerPoint.

Create a new slide in PowerPoint. The slide layout with a title only is usually a good choice if the imported table will be the main focus of the slide.

Step 4: Paste the Table on Your PowerPoint slide

On the Home ribbon, click the arrow below the Paste icon to bring up a sub-menu and click on Paste Special. In the Paste Special dialog box, select the Paste Link radio button and the dialog box will look like the following:

image002

Click the OK button to insert the table.

Step 5: Resize and position the table object

The table comes on to the PowerPoint slide looking like a picture type object and can be sized by dragging the corner white circle resizing handles. Drag the corner handles to make the table as large as you want it to be. You can also drag the entire table to a new position by dragging the center of the table object.

Now, any time the data is updated in the Excel spreadsheet, when the PowerPoint file is opened, the new data will be retrieved and displayed (if the system asks you whether to Update the linked data, always select the option that allows the data to be updated with the latest information). If you move the Excel file, the link will not be able to update as it won't be able to find the file in the original location, which is what the link on the slide is pointing towards.

If you want to edit the data in Excel, you can double click on the table object on the PowerPoint slide and the Excel spreadsheet will open. If you want to prevent others from changing the data in the Excel spreadsheet, make the Excel file a read-only file. This will allow them to see the data in Excel when double clicking on the inserted table, but they won't be able to save any changes to the file.

If you want to send the file to someone else or take the file to another computer to present it, the program will ask if you want to update the links when you open the file, but in this case you will select the option to use the current data since the source spreadsheet file is not available. You will still be able to see the data table, it will contain the current data only and not any updates since you last opened it on your machine where the Excel file is available.

This procedure is very helpful if you have financial data, performance figures or other data that may be prepared and approved by a compliance area and changes monthly or quarterly. It allows the latest data to be shown in the linked PowerPoint slides, making sure that the presentations are compliant with regulations that require updated data to be presented to clients.
