How to Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind

Method 1 of 3: Relaxing the Body

Practice mindfulness meditation. This practice focuses on breathing[4] and keeps you in the here and now, helping you to achieve a stable and calm mind.

o    Begin simply, with brief sessions of 10 or 15 minutes so that the practice does not seem too overwhelming or burdensome.[5] Sit in a comfortable position on the floor (or in a chair if your pain limits your ability to sit on the floor); pay attention to your deep, measured breathing; and focus on an object or on mentally repeating a soothing or uplifting phrase (this is called a mantra).[6]

o    It may take a bit of practice to get the hang of meditation, but it is a powerful way to decrease the intensity of chronic pain.[7]

o    Recent studies suggest that meditation may be able to actually change the brain and, thus, how the brain processes pain.[8]

Method 2 of 3: Changing Your Focus

1.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 5 Version 3.jpg

1

Divert your attention to another area of the body. Instead of thinking about your aching head or burning hands, focus on another part of the body that is not in pain.[9]

2.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 6 Version 3.jpg

2

Seek out positive distractions. Pain has a way of absorbing all of our attention, but we can fight back by focusing on things we enjoy, such as watching a movie, playing a game, or spending time with a friend.[10]

o    Research suggests that listening to music is especially successful in helping people with chronic pain. It decreases pain and feelings of depression while increasing the listener's sense of power.[11]

3.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 7 Version 2.jpg

3

Imagine your favorite food. Indulging in fantasies about food has been shown to alleviate pain—trying imagining a decadent dessert or your favorite Sunday dinner.[12]Whi le this is a short-term solution, it's worth a shot if you're looking for a quick jolt of relief.

Method 3 of 3: Getting Creative

1.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 8 Version 2.jpg

1

Use a mental anesthetic. Imagine giving yourself a shot of novocaine into the site of your pain and creating a numbing sensation. Alternately, picture placing ice packs on the area that hurts and bringing cool, soothing, numbing relief to the pain that way.[13]

o    To see this thought experiment through to the end, picture the end result of the anesthetic, including what the painful area would feel like after the injection and what the experience of relaxation would be like as the medicine starts to work.[14]

2.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 9 Version 2.jpg

2

Try visualization. Visualization, also called guided imagery, involves coming up with a detailed ideal situation and the emotions that accompany it.[15] In the case of severe or chronic pain, this most likely means imagining a situation in which you are pain-free, at ease, and feeling well and unstressed.

o    First, go to a quiet area and get into a comfortable, relaxed position; next, picture someplace you love, whether a favored spot from childhood, the place you like to vacation, etc. Tune into all five senses—sight, smell, sound, touch, and taste. Stay in the moment, paying attention to all the little details around you.[16] If you immerse yourself fully enough in this "scene," you may be able to guide yourself away from your pain.

o    Visualization can be done in as little as a few minutes, or you may use the process for an hour. Details are key to giving yourself a full, realistic sense of what it would feel like, both physically and emotionally, to be free of pain.[17]

3.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 10 Version 2.jpg

3

Turn your pain into a symbol. If you imagine your pain as a loud noise or a bright light, you can turn down the volume/brightness and thus reduce the amount of pain that you feel.[18][19]

o    The trick here is to imagine that you are gradually reducing the irritating quality of the symbol (for example, the grating sound of a car horn); as you reduce that irritation, so, too, will you reduce the irritation caused by your pain. Picture turning off a physical knob and thus "turning off" the symbol and with it the pain.[20]

4.      Overcome Physical Pain With Your Mind Step 11 Version 2.jpg

4

Engage in positive thinking. Chronic pain can cause very unpleasant and negative thoughts that actually increase pain.[21] Try casting situations in a less dire light or thinking about positive imagery (the beach, a place with family and friends)[22] in order to decrease pain.

o    You will have good days and bad days, but if you accept that pain is something you can work around and live with—not something you must fight against every moment—living with it may become easier.[23]

o    Expectations have a strong impact on the severity of the pain you feel, so telling yourself that it won't be so bad may actually help that to come true.[24]

[www.keralites.net] Fwd: Sleeping with Socks on Can Do Wonders for Your Health

The Health Benefits of Sleeping with Socks On!

Having a night of perfect rest is essential for starting the day right. There are umpteen things you can and should do to ensure your sleep is as good as it can be, yet here is one that you probably haven't even considered before: going to bed with a fresh pair of socks on. This is because sleep research indicates a correlation between falling asleep quickly and having increased blood dilation in our extremities (vasodilation). Wearing socks will do this for your feet and have the effect of causing you to sleep easily and quickly.

Wearing socks helps you fall asleep faster than otherwise, because sleeping requires that only our internal core body temperature (CBT) drops, while our skin remains warm. Covering yourself with blankets and putting on socks warms up your skin, dilates your blood vessels, and facilitates the heat exchange that lowers CBT. This signals to your brain that it's time for you to drift to sleep.

3 Health Benefits of Sleeping While Wearing Socks

1. Prevent Night Sweats and Hot Flashes
Wearing socks helps your body better regulate its temperature while it cools itself. For this reason, your sleep is less likely to be disturbed by night sweats or hot flashes.

2. Improve Dry Skin
During cold winters, many people experience overly dry or cracked feet. This can cause soreness, pain, and a little embarrassment. A great way to combat this dryness is to moisturize your feet before bed and then pop on a pair of fresh, cotton socks.

3. Help Prevent Raynaud's Disease Attacks
Raynaud's disease is a condition of the blood cells, which causes a severe overreaction to the cold. This can result in sores and tissue death (necrosis). Wearing socks while sleeping improves body temperature regulation and decreases the chances of Raynaud's disease attacks from happening.

Putting Things in Your Socks

Never wear the same socks at nighttime that you have worn that day, and always make sure to put on a clean, fresh pair to avoid a bacterial build up that may lead to fungal infections. After you take off your day socks, clean your feet and dry them thoroughly (especially between your toes).

Choosing the right socks is also important. There needs to be enough room for airflow to move around your feet, stopping them from overheating and sweating. If your feet are too hot, the number of bacteria on your feet will grow. Purchase a pair of natural-fiber socks, that aren't very thick.

[www.keralites.net] Fwd: Control Menopause and Hot Flashes in 3 Simple Breaths

These Breathing Exercises Will Ease Hot Flashes!

Having to deal with hot flashes (or flushes) can be stressful. In fact, evidence shows that stress is a trigger of this uncomfortable and common symptom of menopause. With this new finding, stress-reducing and serotonin-enhancing habits (including paced breathing exercises) can provide relief, says Michael Goodman, MD and certified menopause practitioner.

These are thought to be useful, as breathing exercises produce a relaxation response which leads to a corresponding reduction of the neurochemicals produced by stress. The neurochemicals not only increase core temperature. But they also narrow the 'temperature neutral zone' in the brain - the range in which you don't shiver or sweat. This therefore makes hot flashes more common. Here are three breathing exercises you can try to reduce hot flashes:

1. Steady and slow
This simple yet effective breathing technique keeps the mind free from thoughts.
Here's How:
1. Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth, touching the ridge between your teeth and palate.
2. Breathe in through your nose and out through your pursed lips, filling and emptying your lungs with air.
3. As you inhale, slowly count to 4, filling the bottom of your lungs with air. As you exhale, count to 4 again filling the top of your lungs with air.
4. At the bottom of your exhale, hold your breath for a count of 6 than repeat the breathing pattern for a minimum of 4 times or a maximum of 8, keeping your tongue placed on that ridge between your teeth.
2. 'Anapana' respiration
An ancient Buddhist breath meditation. The goal is to keep your attention focused on the small area between your nostrils and upper lip.
Here's How:
1. Start by breathing normally, in and out through the nose. Pay close attention to every sensation in this area.
2. Feel the breath as it passes in and out through your nose. Feel it stirring nose hairs, feel it cooler going in and warmer when exiting.
3. Continue to breathe in this way and notice and watch those sensations pass as quickly as they come.
4. If you feel your attention wander, let the thoughts go and return your attention to the one small area under your nose and above your lips.
5. Repeat this breathing exercise for a minimum of 5 minutes, or until you feel completely relaxed.
