Dr. Manu Liladhar Kothari (M.S., M.Sc.): 19 November 1935 – 16 October 2014

Manubhai obtained his MS from the University of Bombay in 1963, and was appointed Lecturer in Anatomy at his alma mater.

NAGPUR: In a world where doctors go gaga over advances in medical science, Dr Manu Kothari comes as a welcome surprise. This septuagenarian, despite being armed with an MS degree, advocates the human body's capability to heal on its own with some help from medicine.

The common refrain of Dr Kothari, professor emeritus of anatomy from KEM hospital, is the belief that the medical practice today was so much dependent on technology and therefore there is no science left to it. "Animals or even adivasis do not depend on medication and complex medical techniques like us. Yet, they heal well after injuries or illnesses. This is possible because the bodies of all organisms are automated systems that we may claim to know much about. In reality, though, our knowledge is superficial and insufficient," he opined.

Another idea close to the heart of Dr Kothari is the relationship between food and the one who consumes it. "What we insult by calling 'raw' vegetables are actually alive or 'amrut' foods. The problem with us is that we have forgotten to respect and celebrate what we eat. Using complicated cooking methods, we destroy the goodness of food, killing it off before eating," he said. He compares this way of consuming food to that of vultures, saying only humans and vultures eat dead food. "The relationship of food and consumer is of a spiritual kind, much like 'Shiv' and 'Jeev'," he remarked.

Surprisingly, Dr Kothari even called potatoes, a vegetable often regarded as unhealthy, a complete food. "It is the processes that we use before consuming this humble vegetable that adversely affect a person's health," he clarified.

His philosophy as a doctor is aptly summarized in the form of a song he has composed on the lines of a popular Raj Kapoor number. "Mareez ki muskurahaton pe ho nisar, mareez ka dard mil sake to le udhaar, mareez ke vaste ho tere dil me pyar, doctor isi ka naam hai," he sang as a parting note to his audience.

Website for heart patients launched: City based Hriday Mitra Mandal, an organisation working for the cause of heart patients and other health related issues, launched a website that provides all the relevant information about heart troubles. The website,www.goodnewsheartpatients.com, is their second attempt at a cyber presence afterwww.cancerfundamentaltruth.com launched five years back.
