Can Fenugreek Increase Breast Milk Supply?
Motherhood is the most beautiful experience of a women's life and mother's milk is the first and healthiest food a baby can have. If you are some one with low breast milk supply then you should read this post!t
There is an easily available herb Fenugreek that can help you overcome your problem.
What is Fenugreek? How can it help?
Fenugreek is a herb that has been used for a long time by medics. It is widely available in many countries. Fenugreek is used as a ground seed in capsule form or as a herbal tea to increase milk production.
Where is it available? What are the intake dosages?
Fenugreek can be taken in various forms. Fenugreek capsules are easily available at most of the medical stores. Most of the brand capsules that are available contain either 580 or 610 mgs of the spice.
The usually prescribed dosage is of 2-3 capsules (of the above mentioned capacity) a day. This is because, if you take lesser dosage, it might have less or probably no effect at all. There are no immediate results. The effects can be seen usually 2 to 3 days after you have started consuming the capsules.
How long should it be used?
Usually, experts suggest that once your breast milk reaches the normal level of production, you should stop the intake of fenugreek.
Are there any Side Effects?
Side effects are generally not found with the usage of fenugreek. But you should be aware of the symptoms, to diagnose them, in case they appear. Fortunately, a very tiny percentage of any effect would reach the baby through milk, so there are no chances of any side effects in the baby. But this cannot always be true for the mother.
Stop fenugreek consumption, if you notice the following symptoms:
Sweat and urine might start to smelling funny
Loose stools, which go away when you stop the usage of fenugreek.
Consumption and subsequent digestion of fenugreek seeds or tea, in infants or late term pregnant women, might cause false diagnosis of maple syrup urine disease. This happens due to the presence of sotolone in urine.
Avoid use of fenugreek during pregnancy. It may start contractions and may increase the risk of pre mature delivery or miscarriage.
Recommended and prescribed dosage of fenugreek, on a daily basis, is 8 grams. If taken in excess it might lead to skin reactions.
Avoid fenugreek if you have had a medical history of following:
Diabetes
Hypoglycemia
Asthma
Peanut or chickpea allergy
Taking natural remedies, instead of chemical ones, is indeed a better option. However, always remember that a drug, no matter how natural it is, should always be taken after consulting an Ayurvedic expert. He will prescribe the herb and its dosage best suited to your body constitution. Fenugreek is no exception to the rule. It indeed is very effective in increasing breast milk supply.
