Do you really believe the impractical rumor that Narendra Modi works for 18 hours a day?

Yes. Why do I believe?

I believe it because I watch him closely whenever he gives any bhaashan on stage. You can gauge a person's sleeping habit by his eyes. When you look at him you ll surely know how much sleep would he be taking.

Now how does he do that?
In one of his recent interviews, he admitted to sleeping very little at night, and never during the day, much to the distress of his doctors who advise him at least 5 to 6 hours of goodnight's sleep. But Modi believes the few hours he sleeps are extremely sound, and it never takes him over 30 seconds to drift off once he hits the sack. Attributing his agility and freshness to the Yoga and Pranayam routine he arduously follows, our Prime Minister sets about his day, and we perhaps, amid the clamour of our humble existence, can borrow a leaf from his book.

What Modi eats, how many hours he sleeps, and how still he remains so active, here are some of the secrets to his healthy lifestyle.

1. Harness the power of meditation
A self-proclaimed fan of Swami Vivekananda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes that a man can shoulder great responsibility only through the power of meditation. Meditation is intrinsic to our very being, a state in which we can channelise our thoughts, rein in our intellect and harness the positive energy that can bring about a change in our outlook. Play some soothing music in the background and try meditating for at least 10 minutes daily, and you won't feel so stressed at work again.

2. Become a Yoga fan, don't give up your schedule for anything in the world
Modi takes his Yoga routine very seriously. Perhaps how he compensates for his lack of normal sleep hours. He does Yoga and Pranayam everyday without an exception. Having shared the stage with Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, Modi intends to promote the ancient Indian culture of Yoga for International Yoga Day on 21st June. Keep about half an hour aside every morning to practice Yoga. Begin with some Pranayam and progress to the various asanas and Suryanamaskar. You are sure to have better grip over situations, and life at large.

3. Positive thinking can win you popularity
Modi believes in taking everything in his stride. And like him, if you can keep a positive attitude in life you too can be very popular among your colleagues, and at home too. Be open to criticism, and then take your own decisions.

4. Say 'no' to junk food, eat a traditional home-cooked meal
Even as a kid Modi never took to junk food, he to this day eats a humble home-cooked meal comprising dal, roti, vegetables and yoghurt. Only meant to appease your hunger pangs, junk food don't add any nutritional value to your diet. Turn to our regional cooking instead, a typical farmer's meal which is healthy, replenishes the nutritional requirement of the body, and doesn't pile up calories.

5. Go green, go vegetarian!
Our PM is an ardent vegetarian, and possibly one of the reasons still has a swagger at 65. Turn vegetarian for a better immune system, and a healthier heart health. Besides, there is really a lot to vegetarian cooking than popularly believed, explore some wonderful herbs, fruits and dairies, and you won't again miss your cholesterol-loaded meats.

6. Unleash the magic of the humble Nimbu Paani
When on the move, whether for his poll campaigning or in between his public discourses, Narendra Modi sips on Nimbu Paani. It is his beverage and he swears on its power of revitalization. You too can make a glass of Nimbu Paani and carry it everywhere with you, for the benefits of Nimbu Paani are myriad. From giving you a glowing complexion, enhancing digestion to aiding weight loss, Nimbu Paani is a still an extremely underrated beverage.

7. Fasting helps detox your body and eliminate toxins
On his famous White House visit, Modi accepted only water from Obama because he was observing a fast. Fasting is good for the body, it detoxifies the body by cleansing the system of all the toxins and retaining its natural balance. It's a good idea for health reasons to fast once or twice a month.

8. Don't oversleep, it makes your brain inactive and tires you out easily
Modi can never sleep beyond 5 hours, and this routine he keeps on his doctor's insistence. If you sleep beyond the prescribed 7 hours, your brain functioning slows down, and makes you lethargic for the rest of the day, while keeping you prone to headaches and stiffness of body. Sleep your hours, but then get up and get going.

9. Spirituality releases you
Its good to follow anything you believe in, be it a religion or simply making a chant at the beginning of the day and before going to bed. These bring peace of mind and soothes your jangled nerves. Our Prime Minister too is fond of the ancient Indian rituals and it isn't uncommon to find him visiting places of worship.
