eat or delete - Your plate, your pill

Look at your plate closely the next time you are eating healthy food. The answer to so many ailments lies right in front of you. Just getting your adequate daily intake of the five nutrients -carbs, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals -fast-tracks you on the health trajectory. You can additionally heal yourself with the goodness of food for these common problems...

CONSTIPATION

To understand how to deal with constipation, it's important to know why constipation occurs. After the digestion process, when the stool moves through the colon, the former may become hard and stubborn if the muscles in the colon contract slowly or poorly, resulting in the stool losing water and becoming hard. This contraction process is called peristalsis.

Quite simply, foods with fibre enable better peristaltic movement. Extra-fibrous foods that help, err, swiftly move things along are senna leaves, raw vegetable juices, chia seeds, papaya, kiwi and ample hydration. It's best not to rely on over-the-counter laxatives as overuse could lead to something called the Lazy Bowel Syndrome, where your bowels nearly stop doing the work on their own, and become dependent on the laxatives.

MIGRAINES

Did you know that almost all migraines are caused due to acidity? And why does acidi ty occur? Well, your gut releases hydrochloric acid (HCl) to digest food but when you eat after long gaps, it leads to acid hanging around in your stomach with no food to absorb it. If you are prone to migraines, start your day by eating within the first hour after you get up, and then proceeding to eat every two hours. When you eat frequently, acidity becomes passé. And don't start your day with tea or coffee on an empty stomach because it will further trigger acid production. If you control your acidity, you control your migraines.

BLOATING

You bloat, paradoxically, when your body thinks it's not getting enough water. Dehydration sends your body into a state of total panic, and it begins to hang on to whatever water it gets instead of expelling it from the body, leading to thicker waists and an overall puffier appearance. To lose that bloat, drink at least 2-3 litres of water, and you'll see how that puffiness slowly begins to ebb.

BAD BREATH

Probiotics (good bacteria) have often been referred to as the elves in our gut that do a lot of the good work like keeping our systems functioning and bowels moving. Unhealthy eating habits, antibiotics, painkillers, self-induced vomiting, sometimes wash out the good probiotic bacteria, and with it cause bad breath along with a feeling of nausea, reduced hunger, gas and general feeling of ill-health. Whenever you wash out your good bacteria, you need to recolonise your flora to get rid of that bad taste in your mouth.

And eating simple, healthy probiotic rich food and other probiotic drinks is one of the simplest and healthiest ways to do that. Always try to find ways to let your body heal itself with food. Because, as opposed to pills and tonics, good healthy food will never have side effects.
