Some random interesting facts about Dr. S Radhakrishnan are - 
 
  • Dr. Radhakrishnan placed Indian Philosophy on the world map.
    He showed how western philosophers, despite all claims to objectivity, were biased by theological influences from their wider culture. In one of his major works he also showed that Indian philosophy, once translated into standard academic jargon, is worthy of being called philosophy by western standards.
  • Dr. S Radhakrishnan was an Indian philosopher who was the first Vice president of India (1952-1962) and the second president of India (1962-1967).
  • Such was the popularity of Dr. S Radhakrishnan that when he was leaving Mysore University to join as a professor in the University of Calcutta, he was taken all the way from Mysore University to the Railway Station in a flower decked carriage that was pulled by his students.
    At the University of Calcutta, he was appointed to the King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science.
  • H. N. Spalding, who had also listened to Dr. Radhakrishnan's lectures in London, was so fascinated by their content and his personality that he found a chair at Oxford for Eastern Religions and Ethics. The Chair, established in 1936 was offered to Dr. Radhakrishnan.

  • He also held the position of Vice Chancellor at Andhra University (1931-1936) and Benaras hindu University (1939-1948).
  • He was also the Chancellor at Delhi University (1953-1962).
  • As the Vice- President, Radhakrishnan had to preside over the Rajya Sabha (Upper House) sessions. Often, during heated debates, Radhakrishnan would intervene with slokas from the Sanskrit classics or quotations from the Bible to calm the charged atmosphere.
    Nehru on seeing his tact commented later, "By the way in which Radhakrishnan conducted the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha, he had made the meetings of the House look like family gatherings!"
  • When Radhakrishnan's appointment as President of India was welcomed by Bertrand Russell, one of the world's greatest philosophers.
    He said "It is an honour to philosophy that Dr. Radhakrishnan should be President of India and I, as a philosopher, take special pleasure in this.
    Plato aspired for philosophers to become kings and it is a tribute to India that she should make a philosopher her President."
  • Along with Ghanshyam Das Birla and some other social workers in the pre-independence era, Radhakrishnan formed the Krishnarpan Charity Trust.

  • Was appointed a Knight Bachelor in 1931.
  • Was Elected Fellow of the British Academy in 1938.
  • Was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954.
  • Received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 1961.
  • Was awarded the Templeton Prize in 1975, a few months before his death. He donated the entire amount of the Templeton Prize to Oxford University.
  • Oxford University instituted the Radhakrishnan Chevening Scholarships and the Radhakrishnan Memorial Award in his memory.
