A dentist who makes dental drill alive with emotion!
An interview with Dr.Torres, who has innovative pictures with his different point of aspect
These innovative pictures you see, are results of a dentist`s who is passionate about his career by using instruments of his daily use. Dr. Richard Torres is from the Dominican Republic and is a general dentist, graduated in 2004 from Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) and works in Censaoral, a clinic in Santiago de los Caballeros.
As we saw these innovative pictures on Instagram with more than 19 thousands of followers, interviewed Dr.Torres to know a little about his artistic career and about condition of the oral health in his country.
1742193_259016894274599_1750298851_nLet`s talk a little about photography. When did you start it?
In January 2014, I started taking pictures one day and found it good to share in Instagram with dental community.
Did you have photography history? How did these innovative subjects come to your mind?
No, I have never studied photography. I just took personal amateur pictures before that. These pictures are composed of basic dental instruments that I use in my daily practice with a touch of imagination, nature aspect and abstract backgrounds.
The idea is to find the beauty in the things you use and see every day, adding colors and good angles and creating sometimes a very imaginary dentistry.
How do you add nature aspect to the dental instruments?
I use reflective surfaces, the sky, the clouds, trees, and some landscapes can be seen as a background, but with a touch of distortion. Also you can see it like a desert, coast, and horizon in an abstract concept in some backgrounds.
How much does it take you to take a picture?
Preparing the area and making the photo session can require one hour or more.
Would you explain your method of photography step by step?
Basically is putting the instruments in a specifics position, taking care of the light and turning different angles to take different shots.
1527636_243687939140099_1909565183_nIs your artistic career limited to taking pictures of dental instruments or it is wider? Do you do any artistic thing by photographing?
I don`t have an artistic career. Like I said before I just take pictures of my every day instruments and upload them on Instagram and I don`t do anything else.
So, what techniques do you use for innovative thinking?
Just let my imagination go off.
How are reactions to your pictures?
People have liked them, I guess that's because it's different from the things they are used to seeing and they are not expecting that.
Does this different view help you to prevent getting stuck in routines? Some dentists think that dentistry is limited and gets boring after sometimes.
If they think dentistry is boring, for sure they need to work in another area. They have to be passionate about the work you do. I try to see a new day as an opportunity to do new things. I believe it is possible to see different things in common objects of our day by day.
And let`s talk about oral health in the Dominican RepublicAre dental services accessible there or expensive?
It varies depending on the zone, but dental services in general are accessible here.
In comparison to the United States and Europe, they are less expensive.
How is oral health in your country?
It is getting better, but we need to work more in prevention. Many people still don`t visit any dentists for years and people from poor zones can`t afford the dental practices.
I believe the problem is that people don`t give the adequate value to oral health, despite they are informed about it.
914268_496159617169599_1344433645_nAre dental services provided in the government clinics more than private ones?
No, these services are provided in private offices more, but the poorest people tend to visit public ones because they are less expensive.
What services are under the insurance coverage?
Basic services like extractions, restorative dentistry, and preventive, and any other can be partially covered.
Do you know how many dentists are in your country? what about dental colleges?
Not exactly, but I suppose dentists can be between 10 thousands and 15 thousands and colleges are Near 10.
How much is the density of dentistry personnel in Dominican Republic?
I am not sure, but our population is about 10 million and it can be 1 dentist for 1000 people approximately.
And as the final question: U. S. News agency, selected dentistry and orthodontic as the best jobs of U. S. due to BLS information in 2016. What is these jobs level in the Dominican Republic?
Here dentistry is well appreciated as a career, and almost has the most income between the other jobs.
