7 life-saving `stranger danger' tips every parent should teach their child

It can be difficult to teach kids sensitively and effectively about protecting themselves, but these unique pointers will help

It's every parent's worst nightmare, a terrifying situation no one wants to believe is possible.

But impressing upon your children the importance of `stranger danger' is one of the most vital lessons you can impart.

Children don't always know when they're in danger, and it's a fine line to tread between being helpful and needlessly instilling them with a sense of fear.

It can be anything from being approached, propositioned, followed, or generally feeling unsafe in an unfamiliar situation.

It's a tricky conversation to have and cover in a way that's both effective and sensitive to their age.

Luckily , a dedicated parenting forum has put together a helpful seven point list of tips for both parents and children.

1 NO PERSONALISED ITEMS

That means no personalised rucksacks, lunch boxes, bracelets, tags or anything which makes their name highly visible to strangers. When strangers know your child's name -your child is much more likely to trust them.

2 HAVE A FAMILY CODE WORD

As a family , come up with a code word.

Make sure it's something easy to remember, but nothing too common. The code word, is useful in a number of situations.

If you've asked someone else pick up their child, they ought to know the code word. If they don't know that word, your child should not go with them.

When at a friend's house, if your child feels unsafe, ask them to call you and use the code word. If and when out in public, there's a safety threat, you can use the word to warn your children and leave quickly or take shelter.

3 BODY SECRETS AREN'T ALLOWED

In the instance when a child is being sexu ally abused, they are often told to "keep it a secret" between them and their abuser.

Teach your child that there should never be any `body secrets' between you, and that they should tell you immediately if someone has touched them and asked to keep it a secret.

4 RUN IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION IF FOLLOWED

Tell your children that if they are being followed or chased, they must start running in the opposite direction of the car or vehicle used to chase them. This can buy them some time till the vehicle turns around.

5 TELL THEM TO SCREAM "WHO ARE YOU?"

It's not uncommon to see children struggle in the arms of their parents -especially at that tantrumprone age.

So it's important your kids know to scream something which alert and alarm adults around them.Suggestions on what to shout out "Who are you? Help!" "Leave me alone! I don't know you!" "Where's my mum and dad? Help!"

6 ALL MANNERS MUST GO OUT OF THE WINDOW IF THEY'RE IN TROUBLE

Tell your child they are allowed to hit, scream and make a scene -whatever it takes to alert people around them that they are in trouble. Equip them with some suggestions depending on where they are. For example, if they are in a shop, tell them to knock things off the shelf. Knocking things over will get the attention of more people who will then take a closer look at what is going on.

7 FIND A MUM WITH KIDS TO HELP

If your child is separated from you or lost in public, a police officer may not be around to assist them.Helping them delineate who might be safe beforehand can save critical seconds when they are in danger. And a mum with her own children is a pretty safe bet.
