Wow, Wow, Wow : selfless service in Coimbatore
Pasiyara Soru, a movement started by Rajasethumurali of Kuniamuthur, Coimbatore, has been feeding the hungry, destitute and those who don't get proper food. He collects surplus food from various ceremony houses and distributes it to the hungry ones for the past ten years. "No matter what the occasion is – happy or sad – give us the surplus food and we will give it to the needy," says Raja.
Raja knows what hunger is. He knows what it feels like to sleep on an empty stomach. It was this pain that motivated him to feed the poor. He also provides food for the in-patients of the government hospitals who, in most cases, do not get proper food.
In addition to Pasiyara Soru, Raja is also involved in social service for the past 20 years. One such activity is his organ donation campaign, through which he has made 67 people donate their organs.
"When we go to collect food, we encourage the donors to cook additionally from next time and most of them are happily doing it," he says with a smile. At least 250 people are benefitted everyday through his Pasiyara Soru movement. His team, of 20 members and an autorickshaw, now covers the entire city of Coimbatore. The auto-rickshaw was donated by some of his sponsors. The lorry owners association and a few others funded the utensils.
When asked about how he manages the expenses, he says, "I'm an actor. I have acted in films like 'Pithamagan,' 'Naan Kadavul,' 'Ivan Vera Maathiri' and a few others. I have also done a daily soap on TV."
