DEAR ALL,
Janmastami commemorates the earthly appearance of Krishna, who is described in India's sacred writings as God Himself. One of the biggest religious festivals in the world, it is celebrated by nine hundred and thirty million people around the world--and two million in the US alone.
Incarnations of God appear for special reasons under special circumstances. Whenever there is much unrighteousness, whenever the balance of human society is upset by selfish, ruthless and cruel beings, whenever unrighteousness prevail, the great Incarnation of God appears in order to re-establish righteousness and to restore peace.
The literal meaning of the name Krishna is "he who ploughs." The Lord is he who uproots the weeds of impurities from the human mind. Another meaning of for Krishna is "he who attracts all." Krishna drew to himself not just the gopis, but all of humankind, as well as the birds, mammals, plants, trees, stones, thorns and everything else in nature.
The Krishna Avatar was intended to give a perennial message to the world. He sought nothing for himself. He kept nothing for himself. He gave away everything to the people. He slayed his maternal uncle, Kamsa and installed Kamsa's father, Ugrasena, on the throne. He assisted the Pandavas, defeated the Kauravas, and crowned Dharmaja as the emperor. He was a king without a crown. He did not make himself king. He was the king of kings. He had no kingdom of his own. But he ruled over the hearts of the millions. It is this profound truth that is proclaimed by the Krishna principle (Krishna thathva).
Krishna has played various roles during his stay in the world. He was Arjuna's charioteer. He was an excellent statesman. He was a master musician; he gave lessons even to Narada in the art of playing the veena. The music of His flute thrilled the hearts of the Gopis and everyone else. He was a cowherd in Brindavan and Gokul. He exhibited miraculous powers even as a child. He killed many demons. He revealed His Cosmic Form to His mother, Yasoda. He performed the Rasa Lila, the secret of which can only be understood by devotees like Narada, Radha and the Gopis. He taught the supreme Truth of Yoga, Bhakti and Vedanta to Arjuna and Uddhava. He had mastered every one of the sixty-four fine arts. For all these reasons He is regarded as a full and complete manifestation of God.
From the moment that he was born into Kamsa's prison, to the moment he was killed by the hunter's arrow, every action Krishna performed was sweet, attractive and aimed at cleaning the human world of its impurities. The message of Janamashtami is that it is time to bring a wave of joy in society. Become seriously joyful!
"Let noble thoughts come to me from all directions"
REGARDS
