Having a family or friend's support can be quite helpful for someone going through an psychiatric illness. Most people who go through these are in state of denial. And while most of us know how to take care of a person with cold and flu, but don't know how to handle someone with mental illness. Like any other illness this also needs a lot of care, love and support. Here are a few points to keep in mind if any of your friend or family member is going through it. You might not be able to understand their situation but you care for them and want to help! Assure them that you are there for them, no matter what! You might not be able to understand their illness but do make efforts and not lose patience. Tell the person that "You might not believe this now, but it's definitely going to end." Tell them that they are not alone in this fight and you will get through this together. It's better to listen to them and not talk. It is advisable to keep your mouth shut and not give any at advice at all. Never ever say this. It only makes it worse. It is good to say this in a normal situation but not to someone who suffering from a serious mental health issue. They just can't snap out of it in a day, and you have to understand that! It's not in their hands, so stop telling them "you will be fine, stop worrying, you are stretching it now. Shouldn't you be better by now?" You might end up damaging it further. "What's wrong with you?, What do you want me to do now? I can't do anything about your situation!" It's better you stay away from the person if you can't help them.
Things You Should Say!
1. Tell them that your are there for them
2. Be positive around them
3. We will fight it together
4. Just listen
Things You Should Not Say!
1. Hah! Trust me, it is all in your head.
