The Sunk Cost Fallacy is the fallacy of throwing good money after bad just because of our emotional attachment to investments already made. Thus suppose I have booked a ticket for a movie or show. But then I hear from reliable sources that the movie is lousy. However I still go to the movie just because I have already invested in the ticket. Similarly there are millions who are convinced of the absurdity of their beliefs. However because of the time they have already invested in their beliefs they are reluctant to admit the absurdity of their religions and consequently they lead double lives preaching religion to others though they are convinced of the absurdity of their religions. This is especially true of priests and clergy of the Christian churches. Thus the best seller "Sins of the Scriptures" waas written by John Shelby Spong, a retired American Bishop of hte Episcopal church. In the book the author writes about the absurdities in the Bible but then goes on being apologetic about these absurdities and recommends that the Bible be respected. This is a case of sunk costs fallacy. Because the Bishop has invested all his life in Christianity and is now reluctant to let go and so go on justifying the scriptures though he is convinced they are worthless as a guideline to life. Similarly there are marriages which are irreparable. However we go on pretending that we have a harmonious married life because we are reluctant to abandon the time and suffering we have already invested in our marriage. The result is that we lead miserable married lives whereas a divorce would have been much better if the marriage is irreparable. I think we are also highly prone to this kind of sunk cost fallacy.
