Since the year 1957, India has been sending movies for submission at the Oscars, for the Best Foreign Language Film category. It all started with Mehboob Khan's epic drama, Mother India, which actually went on to even get nominated for the award. And since then, the journey has been pretty memorable. Even though only three Indian films have been nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars (Mother India, Salaam Bombay!, and Lagaan), the films which India has been submitting throughout the years for nomination are definitely a must watch. We picked out a few best ones for you, and it's time you stock up on their DVDs right now! Okay, so you've got to be living on some other planet if you still haven't caught up with this epic drama film starring Nargis and Sunil Dutt. And of course, you all would know the story that despite playing her son in the movie, Sunil Dutt who went on to save Nargis from the fire on the film's sets, managed to woo her. And as they say rest is history! Also, this is one of the three films which were actually nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars. Yet another classic starring the ethereal Meena Kumari, Rehman and Guru Dutt. It explored the complicated relationship between a lonely wife, who takes to drinking, her busy husband and a lowly employee. And even though it was India's submission to the Oscars, the Academy actually wrote back to Guru Dutt stating that a woman drinking alcohol isn't permissible in their culture and hence they can't nominate it! Dev Anand's masterpiece Guide is one movie which each and everyone out there must see once. Exploring the complications and various emotions of life, Guide is one cult classic film and would always remain so. Waheeda Rehman and Dev Anand's pairing too ensured that it was a super duper hit when it released. This Shyam Benegal's film starring Smita Patil might not be popular today, but it's one of those classics which is like an acquired taste. Like it or not, you simply cannot ignore it. Based with the backdrop of white revolution in the country, and brilliant actors like Smita Patil, Girish Karnad, Naseeruddin Shah, and Amrish Puri, the film went on to win the National Award for Best Hindi Film the year it was released. This is one film which will always be remembered for it's sensitive and hard hitting storyline and some amazing exhibition of acting talent from Anupam Kher and Rohini Hattangadi. Exploring the rampant corruption in the system, Anupam Kher stole the show in this one, when he played a stubborn old man whose son has been shot dead, despite the fact that he was actually just 28 years old at that time! Here's one film which will put forth the naked brutalities and struggles of life. Based on the life of street urchins in Bombay, this Mira Nair flick will actually leave you thinking about life and its consequences. This one went on to become the second film which was actually nominated at the Oscars. Odds are you must have heard about this Dimple Kapadia film. Based on the lives of professional mourners (known as Rudaalis) in Rajasthan, and directed by Kalpana Lajmi, here's one flick which will make you escape your daily grind and spare a thought for people who are not so fortunate in life. Dimple Kapadia did an explosive job in this film and went on to win the National award for Best Actress as well. Well, what do we say about this one. Bandit Queen chronicled the life of the female bandit, Phoolan Devi, and showed how she was forced to become a bandit after being raped multiple times. Seema Biswas did a brilliant job and this film is not meant for the faint-hearted! Yet another Mira Nair film on the list, and rightfully so! Starring Nandita Das, Aamir Khan, and Rahul Khanna in probably the finest performances of their lives, Earth is set in the time of India's partition in 1947, and how it affects a group of friends all belonging to different faiths. Written, directed, and produced by South star Kamal Haasan, this is one film where you'd need to apply a lot of brains and keep your emotions under control! The semi-fictional plot of the film shows the tale of Nathuram Godse and how he murdered Mahatma Gandhi. Even though the film saw many protests against it when it released, it still remains to be one of the cult classics of its time. This Marathi film is perhaps one of the most emotionally draining film you'd ever come across. A villager and his 8-year-old grandson visit the city to get the kid's eye operated for a rare type of cancer which he's suffering from. And the only way to save the kid is to undergo a surgery which would leave him blind. The film follows the duo's journey through this ordeal. Shwaas went on to win the National Award for Best Film, which was a first for a Marathi film in nearly 50 years! Come on, so who doesn't know about this Aamir Khan starrer! This one not only became the third film to be nominated at the Oscars, but also won hearts all over the country. And in hindsight, this is one film which actually revived Aamir Khan's Bollywood career. Not many people know this, but Barfi was actually India's submission to the Oscars. This super cute tale of love between a deaf and dumb guy and an autistic girl won many hearts in the country. Also, Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra showed some explosive acting talent in this one. This courtroom drama film examines the Indian legal system through the trial of an ageing folk singer at a court in Mumbai. The film did brilliantly well at various international film festivals and even went on to win the National Award for Best Film. Watch it if serious kind of cinema is your cup of tea. 1. Mother India
