How papaya leaves could help fight dengue fever

Since Delhi has been reeling under increasing cases of dengue fever, there has reportedly been a sudden increase in the demand for papaya leaves in the capital. Vikram Saini, director of the Masjid Nursery at Pandara Road in south Delhi, told IANS there are many people who come to buy the papaya plant. YC Singh of Greenways Nursery at Lado Sarai said that at least 20-25 people come in a week to buy papaya plants."The number of people coming to buy the plant is increasing. We sell a papaya seedling for Rs 20, and the plant for Rs 25," he said.

Preeti Chabra, senior consultant (Ayurveda) at Sir Ganga Rama Hospital, was quoted saying by IANS: "Yes, I have come across many people who are taking the juice of these leaves. This looks like a new phenomenon. A lot of patients have told me that they are taking it. I am not stopping them. But it's not mentioned in the classical Ayurvedic text."
According to an article on thehealthsite.com, there might be some truth to the papaya juice's claim to help fight dengue fever. In the article, Dr Sanath Hettige, a general physician in Sri Lanka was quoted saying that it would help normalise the platelet count, improve the clotting factor and liver function, and repair liver damage caused due to dengue.
How to use papaya leaf juice to increase platelet count
1) Take the papaya leaves and grind it to a paste. (Do not add water)
2) Squeeze the leaves to extract the juice
3) Mix 1 teaspoon of this juice with a small piece of jaggery
4) Avoid drinking water immediately afterwards
Do ensure that you check your platelet count to make sure that it remains in the normal range.
