Two young men, Ferrando and Guglielmo, had
an argument with Don Alfonso, about the fidelity of women:
- Don Alfonso (kidding):
Woman's constancy is like the Arabian Phoenix;
Everyone swears it exists, but no one knows where.
- Ferrando (with fire): The phoenix is my Dorabella!
- Guglielmo: The phoenix is my Fiordiligi!
- Don Alfonso: It's neither one nor the other.
It never existed, and never will. Shall we bet on it?
- Guglielmo: A thousand sequins if you want
They pretend to leave for the battlefield
Ah who, amid such sorrow, can ever more delight in life?
The beautiful military life...
Then return in disguise, unrecognizable.
The idea is to win the affecctions of the other's fiancé.
We have beautiful feet, beautiful eyes, beautiful nose ...
The two young women will show an almost heroic resistance.
Respect this example of constancy, you abject creatures ...
But will they be faithful to the end? Don Alfonso will win his bet?
What a tumult! What an uproar!
The guys simulate to drink arsenic for the cruelty of girls
- These are the effects of the poison
- (I'll burst if I don't laugh!)
Don Alfonso invites them to a romantic party by the seashore
Don Alfonso and Despina leave them alone and see what happens.
After an heroic struggle, both young women give in.
Because he lies, Dorabella falls...
Merciful heaven! Cruel man, you've won! Do with me what you will.
Immediately there's a wedding feast:
In your glass and mine may every care be drowned,
And let no memory of the past remain in our hearts.
Directly thereafter, military music is heard in the distance,
indicating the return of the officers.
We return to the loving embrace of our faithful sweethearts
To crown them for their constancy!
This is the cruel man who deceived us!
Ferrando: I believe you, my fair one, but I won't put it to the test.
What always makes another weep, will be for him a cause of mirth.
And, amid the tempests of this world
He will find serenity.
Happy is the man who looks at everything on the right side
And through trials and tribulations makes reason his guide.
