BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir
An awe-inspiring complex of buildings, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in north-west Toronto is the second largest Hindu temple outside of India, and one of the city's most beautiful and distinguished constructions. It comprises the Mandir (Hindu place of prayer), a cultural center referred to as Haveli, and the Heritage Museum where lies the Understanding Hindu Dharma Exhibition.
This truly remarkable piece of architecture has been built exclusively from hand-carved pieces of Turkish limestone, Indian pink stone and Italian Carrara marble, according to the principles of the Ancient Indian Shilpshastras. The project was finished in only 18 months and no steel was used in the construction.
