Bollywood Actors Were Most Convincing Playing Siblings On-Screen
Indian sisters are busy doing last minute shopping for their dear brothers ahead of the festival of Rakshabandhan. As much as real life seems interesting around such eventful days, Bollywood has, over the years, made it a point to bring out the best of the sibling bond in reel life too.
Yesteryear superstar Dharmendra agreed to get a rakhi tied on his wrist in Resham Ki Dori. The 1974 film gave us the iconic song "Behna ne bhai ki kalaai se pyar bandha hai…". But it also kicked off the tradition of top actors playing siblings in Hindi films. On that note, take a look at 15 most memorable brother-sister roles in Bollywood, still remain etched in our minds.
1. Dev Anand - Zeenat Aman (Hare Rama Hare Krishna)
The two actors who mostly romanced onscreen, are however remembered best for playing siblings in this hit film. And their song "Phoolon ka taaron ka…" depicts the most lovable part about a brother and sister duo.
2. Shahrukh Khan - Aishwarya Rai (Josh)
Yes, they were not just playing siblings, but twins! The two, at their naughtiest best, were so convincing that nobody remembers the other romantic angles in the film. They might have followed it up with Mohabbatein, but we prefer this tapori revelry more!
3. Arbaaz Khan – Kajol (Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya)
Playing the father-figure to the naïve Kajol, Arbaaz Khan was so loved in this role that he became the evergreen 'Bade Bhaiya' of Bollywood! He was a raw representation of every elder brother being protective towards the guy his sister dates. Aww!
4. Genelia D'Souza – Prateik Babbar (Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na)
Theirs was a BFF bond. The two youthful actors played siblings who belong to the same age group, grow together, curse and throw water at each other, but at the end of the day read each other's minds. Their heart-to-heart conversation at the window was the most beautiful part about the film. As for the remaining portions, they were our Tom and Jerry!
5. Juhi Chawla – Sanjay Suri (My Brother…Nikhil)
The critically acclaimed film had Suri playing a real-life inspired character of India's first AIDS activist. And Chawla represented the never-dying spirit and love of a sister, as she supports her brother to get on with life after being ousted by society.
6. Shreyas Talpade – Shweta Prasad (Iqbal)
Behind every successful man, there is a woman, and in this one, it was Iqbal's little sister Khadija. The two shared a rare bond. While the elder one mostly takes charge, Shweta who played Shreyas' younger sister, was her deaf and dumb brother's guiding light.
7. Kareena Kapoor – Tusshar Kapoor (Golmaal Returns)
They are the hilarious duo on this list. The two, who were romantically paired in Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai, returned only as siblings! Their mute and hypersensitive antics left the audience in splits. And if that wasn't enough, Kareena was named Ekta in the film, exactly like Tusshar's real life sister, Ekta Kapoor!
8. Salman Khan – Tabu (Jai Ho)
While Salman prefers to drive a film single-handedly, he gave equal credit to powerhouse performer Tabu this time. The film which stayed away from being a typical masala entertainer had Salman playing a doting brother to his elder sister, on the sidelines of a plot about social awakening. He can carry off any role convincingly!
9. Hrithik Roshan – Karisma Kapoor (Fiza)
This one told the story of a strong and feisty sister, adamant to find her brother who went missing during riots, and got inclined towards extremism. With some amazing acting, the two aptly got into the skins of their characters. Remember the intense scene where Karisma breaks down after her mother's demise?
10. Sushant Singh – Amrita Puri (Kai Po Che!)
This brother-sister bond managed to stand out in the critically acclaimed film about three friends. Both Sushant and Amrita successfully pulled off their love-hate relationship with finesse.
11. Arjun Rampal – Deepika Padukone (Housefull)
They are arguably one of the most good-looking bhai-behen jodis we have seen in recent times. While the comic plot played well with their onscreen love, it had streaks of a protective brother who knows his sister is too glamorous for anyone to lose their heart!
12. Abhishek Bachchan – Asin (Bol Bachchan)
The two go back to acting together as siblings in this 2012 comedy. The film projected a breezy relationship between a brother and a sister who could easily keep secrets between them. We would like to remember these two more for this, rather than their recent pairing in All Is Well.
13. Hrithik Roshan – Kanika Tiwari (Agneepath)
It was perhaps the most heart-touching brother-sister bond recently. While the two played their part with oodles of sincerity, the heart-rending number by Sonu Nigam "Abhi mujh mein kahin…" left most eyes moist! Given the beautiful act, one can even readily play sister to our hunk Hrithik…
14. Farhan Akhtar – Divya Dutta (Bhaag Milkha Bhaag)
Much credit to the success of this blockbuster biopic can be given to the affection these two projected onscreen. They were instrumental in playing backbones to each other while facing immense tragedy and hardships around the Partition of India. Our throats choked particularly in the scene where Farhan shows off his jacket as a player representing India, to his emotional sister Divya. Rare display of happiness in tears!
15. Ranveer Singh – Priyanka Chopra (Dil Dhadakne Do)
And last but definitely not the least, these two young guns, who despite singing romantic songs in other films, agreed to show some relatable sibling revelry in one of this year's biggest hits. Breaking stereotypical brother-sister chemistry in Bollywood, they were astoundingly real, whether it was through silent understanding or mature camaraderie. Their 'chocolate-snatching' scene especially made each one of us miss our own siblings. We know why Ranveer calls Priyanka, his bhai!
