New injection treatment hailed as the biggest breakthrough in years.

It involves using a hypodermic needle to inject a tiny pliable drainage tube into the eye, allowing excess fluid to flow out.


 

Experts last night hailed the tube, called the Xen Gel Stent, as one of the biggest breakthroughs in the treatment of moderate to severe glaucoma in years.


  

'It's probably still not quite as effective as the traditional procedures in lowering eye pressure,' he said, adding that the new technique works for around 75 to 80 per cent of patients compared with 90 per cent for the established treatment.


  

Mr Sharma said: 'I have found it as effective as traditional surgery, but without the complications or discomfort.' However, he noted that it is more expensive, costing about £6,000 privately against £4,000 for a trabeculectomy.
