The remarkable story of survival began when the dog leaped out of some bushes and the driver had no chance of avoiding him, it was reported.
After hitting the pup, Mr Zhang was convinced he was dead but then began hearing noises coming from the front of the car which sounded suspiciously like a dog.
He recalled: 'I was driving pretty quickly at the time so when I hit the dog, I thought it had either died or run away, so I didn't get out of the car to check. But later, I heard barking from under the car.
'There was some distance between the dog and the water tank and its body was held tightly by the bumper.
'I didn't dare to extricate it by myself. I thought it should be safe there, so I drove it all the way back to Loudi.
'It escaped from great danger. This really moved me. This shows my fate with the dog.'
The dog was stuck in the car from Fenghuang to Mr Zhang's howntown Loudi and was released from the vehicle after the driver went to a vet clinic for help.
Veterinarian said the dog was completely uninjured apart from a few cuts and bruises and shock and expressed surprise his remarkable story of survival.
After getting the all-clear from the vet, Mr Zhang took him home in a cage in the back of a truck and the two are now inseparable.
