self-taught scientist P O Jayapandian Child-Labourer Turned Inventor has 120 Devices in His Kitty :-
DHARMAPURI: He had no formal schooling and languished as a child labourer. But, this self-taught scientist P O Jayapandian has once again proved that education alone does not produce a genius. Though he had never been to a school due to poverty and blissfully unaware of the principles of physics, the 47-year-old has 120 small yet useful devices up his sleeves.
The first from his stable of  innovative products came in 1997. It was a device which would ring the temple bell and offer Kumkum with sacred ash on a coin being dropped in the hundiyal. "Donated to the Sellur Chandra Mariamman Kovil in Madurai, it earned him recognition."
His inventions include, a gadget designed to switch off street lights when sunlight is there and a device attached to a bike alerting the rider when speed-breaker is 20 meter ahead.

A native of Sellur in Madurai, Jayapandian now lives in a 10 x 10 ft house in Dharmapuri where he is  a guest lecturer in a local Polytechnic College.

Having lost his parents at a tender age, he was forced to take up odd jobs in the lathes. But he had a passion for  in science and wanted to become a scientist. This, propelled him to crossed all hurdles and invent devices that are usefull in everyday life.

"As I was worked in the iron industry as a young boy, I got iron scraps for free. Using the scraps, I made small devices but no one recognised me at that time. The device I donated to the temple helped me earn recognition. After that students from local engineering colleges approached me for their projects. Later, a polytechnic college in Dharmapuri appointed me as a guest lecturer," he told Express. Of all his inventions, he feels proud of the gadget that warns motorists and pedestrians at unmanned level crossings.

"The Railways is spending hundreds of crores on preventing accidents at the numerous unmanned level crossings. It could install this device at every unmanned level crossings," he says.

He has lost all his savings on research and invention. "Earlier, I was not aware of patent rights and some of my friends have cheated me. However, now I have applied patent rights for my new inventions," he reveals. For the development of science and technology, he suggests setting up of science parks in all major towns. Despite having a very large number of number of Engineering colleges, he says the country is not able to produce scientists like European and American countries. For, in his view  children are increasingly becoming bookworms lacking practical knowledge.

"Every year, the Centre is spending nearly `3,000 crore to conduct science day in  government schools. Using this amount, we can set up permanent science museums in every district to bring the students more closer to science," Jayapandian reasons.
