Re: [www.keralites.net] Doctors greedy, going to be hated: Health minister ( Maharastra ) Suresh Shetty

Dear Doctor friends
Our society is so entrenched in corruption that we cannot point our fingers at one profession only. Take the case of engineers - the Govt. PWD kind - who blatantly accept bribes and approve plans for buildings, dams, bridges etc which fall (as it happened in Chennai recently) and people are killed. The Govt servants who do their work  which they are supposed to do freely only after being 'gratified'. The chartered accountants who find loopholes and pass company accounts thus defrauding the nation etc.
While all thease anti social activities are condemnable the medical profession is facing peoples ire since we are personally affected compared to other professions. It is our life and hard earned savings which are affected by the corrupt and callous attitudes of Doctors and hence we as a society condemn them more than engineers or chartered accountants etc.
In USA the medical profession is more well behaved since the medical mal-practice laws are so stringent that doctors are sued in millions of dollars if they make  some mistakes or are caught doing things not right. Such strict laws are not there in our country.
Nobody claims that ALL doctors are cheating or corrupt but since they are in the front lines we the public notice them first rather than other professionals.

Mr Thomas Mathew,
People like you can (or would like to)  beat up Doctors, ransack hospitals, terrorize patients bring the whole Medical Profession to disrepute whenever there is a result of sincere medical treatment turns out of control of a Doctor, (luckily now in Kerala we have a law to deal with this.). No Trained doctor will knowingly harm his patient - I assure you!!
Go Ahead Thomas, the public wont touch you, because as I assume you are a 'Doctor-Basher' - and the media will be onthe side of people like you - because bashing doctors and attacking hospitals is 'sensational and breaking news' - it is media fodder.
Who are you going to turn to Thomas, when you or your family have a real medical problem?? ---- an Aururvedic Physician, A Homeopath , Unani Practitioner, a Naturopath, or maybe even a  'Which-doctor' ("mandravadhi")?..  do you imply that these quacks practice with 'real professional ethics' ..... you know the reality don't you?
Dr Dhananjayan

Sir
Sorry to say that you are hyping two cases the truth of those cases is not known to the reader or the versions of the accused os never heard.

You have only two cases to tell about, whereas 2000 out patients and 500 -600 inpatients recieves proper medical cre PER DAY in my hospital alone.
Its difficult for me to accept that a cardiologist, however great he is, or even if he belongs to AIIMS can assure a person that he will not die of heart attack in the coming 5 years. Poor cardiologist also os a human being, who cannot predict what's going to happen to him in the next moment.
Private practice os neither an evil, corruption nor malpractice. Its permitted by the govt by service rules and several people enjoy the benefit of it for consulting their doctors of choice at more convenient time.
If there is corruption or malpractice in medical profession like in any other profession, there are laws of the land and sufficient govt machinery to invoke it.
You are planning to beat the doctors in public, where even ajmal kasab and murderers of rajiv gandi enjoy the protection of law.

We are ordinary people, not gods or angels.
Please allow us to continue in our profession with safety and dignity. Please think at least we are also tax paying citizens of india and we deserve a better reward for serving the country, other than beating up in the public.
Let good sense prevail.

Regards
Dr.Jayasankar

This was a noble profession. Not any more. For a person to become a doctor the expense is in crores under management quota. Also one has to do  MD and super speciality and work under a consultant over a period of 10 yrs  min. before becoming a consultant oneself. After all that the Pharma companies ,and Laboratories are there to do spot fixing. Govt. is ensuring that caste quota system is perennial in higher education and jobs. Where then is the respect for merit ?? Top it all, very few seats are available overall in MBBS and MD. Under these conditions most of the doctors want to quickly make up the money spent by them. You also find that they prefer a doctor in marriage too. Poor creatures are so compelled by the society and circumstances. YET, NO TWO WRONGS MAKE ANYTHING RIGHT. Bad is bad if not worse. Crime cannot be justified by any means.
1. Abolish quota system in MBBS admissions.  Only Merit list.
2. Uniform fees in Govt. and Pvt. colleges, which is affordable.
3. Govt, to compensate pvt. colleges for the difference for 10 yrs. and then take over from 11th year. The founders would have made enough Return       on Investment by then. They can start a new college again.
4. Double the intake at MD and Super speciality level every three years
5. By mere supply and demand basis everything in medicare will become affordable
6. Make it compulsory for doctors to prescribe generic medicine.
7. There will be no need for any doctor to cheat the patient.
This is my opinion and suggestion.
Will Namo  govt try it ???

Even a thief has a justification for what he is doing; I see the justification of doctors being corrupt from that angle only. Corruption was there in India from time immemorial. But doctors were not corrupt in India, at least in Kerala whom I know, some time 50-60 years back and they were worshiped by the patients. As time passed, the evil of private practice by Govt. doctors crept in and they started treating patients who pay them, with extra care, even then they were respected by the people. But now, 90% of the doctors have become totally corrupt in every possible way. They prescribe unwanted costly medicines to patients to earn benefits from pharmaceuticals.  I know a doctor who went to Japan and Singapore on pleasure trips  all expenses paid by a particular company. They sent patients for unwanted tests to labs to earn the commissions. I will conclude with two personal experiences with a well known private hospital in the capital city of Delhi and one small hospital in Kerala
My friend, who had a mild heart attack in Gulf came to Delhi, where his wife was employed for further medical treatment. He went to a well known heart hospital and met a senior consultant. After conducting tests for which he had to spend about Rs.10000, the cardiac surgeon told him that he had to undergo open heart surgery immediately for which he would have to spend about Rs.4.5 lakhs, The person was shocked and the doctor then told him that if he was short of money a special discount of one lakh could be given. He said he would tell later and came out of the room and told his wife, who was waiting outside about it. At that time a malayalee nurse who was inside the room, when he was being examined , passed through and in a hushed tone, told him not to rush with the operation and go for a second opinion as the hospital is known doing operations for making money. Immediately he left the hospital and the next day, he went to All India Institute of Medical Science and met a malaylee cardiologist, who after examining him and seeing the test results told him that there was no need of surgery and that he could guarantee that he would not die of heart attack at least  for the next five years, and prescribed some medicines. This happened about 20 years back, and my friend is now  leading a normal life without any problem and he did not have any problem till now.

Another incident, is relating to my mother. She felt a slight breathing difficulty and taken to the causality of a hospital in Central Travancore and a junior doctor on duty, declared that it is due to gas trouble and gave her an injection. My brother, who had taken her to the hospital requested the doctor to do an ECG to rule out the possibility of a heart attack. The doctor, who as in a hurry to go for lunch, declared that there was no need for ECG as he was sure it was  a case of gas. She went back home and within half an hour she had a massive heart attack and died on the way to the hospital. After her burial I went to the Medical Superintendent of the hospital and he called for the file and to my utter shock, it was found that the junior doctor had written on the file, that ECG was refused by the person accompanying the patient; he had written it after the death. I wanted to file a police case against the junior doctor, but the medical superintendent virtually touched my feet as the reputation of the hospital was involved.

Now Dr. Jayashanker, tell me what should be done with such doctors, I feel that they should not only be hated but beaten up in public and debarred from practicing.

T. M

What the honourable Health minister has said is true. In India about 90% of doctors are greedy and corrupt. It is a vicious circle started by the education barons and government connivance in demanding capitation fees for medical colleges. As a result to recover their investment, doctors after graduating and starting their own practice fleece and bleed the poor patients. You might be an exception Dr. Sankar but gracefully accept that there is hugh corruption within medical fraternity.

What about politicians? There were central defense ministers who had accepted commission even for soldier's coffins!
Why only doctors should become harischandras? They are a cross section of the society. The whole society including the commented minister should become corruption free and committed, then only the nation will develop.
All these parties together are ruling India for the last 67 years. Why didn't they strengthen the public healthcare system? Why do they offer meagre remuneration to govt.doctors snd drag them into corruption? Why dont they spend 15 -17 % of national income on healthcare instead of the 1.7% current expenditure.
. Please don't tarnish doctors and medical profession and dont generalise someone's malpractice at least on this doctor's day.
Comments and criticism should be born from good intention, not from sheer jealousy.

Doctors greedy, going to be hated: Health minister ( Maharastra )  Suresh Shetty : Mumbai: -"I came across a case where someone was charged Rs 13 lakh for delivery and the doctor was still not satisfied," went the first. "There was this case in a big hospital where the doctor recommended one more procedure on a patient who was dead. A ward boy had to inform him the patient was dead," was the next.
"I can narrate a large number of such examples. I am not doing that. I only appeal to doctors to regain trust and respect from people. I had a family doctor, Dr Prabhu at Prabhadevi, who charged only Rs 2 for medicines," Shetty said.
He wondered why heart stents are priced Rs3 lakh. "In government-owned JJ Hospital, stents used to be priced Rs1.40 lakh. After I decided to buy stents through a tender process, the hospital is getting them at Rs23,000. Now, even the central government is buying at our rates," he added.
State health minister Suresh Shetty said,
"Doctors, you're going to be a hated lot. (Your) greed for money is making you overcharge patients."
Health minister Suresh Shetty's fusillade caught the audience at Shanmukhananda hall by surprise on Sunday.
"Like education barons, they (doctors) will become a hated community, if they don't stop unethical practices," Shetty continued.
"About 20 years ago, doctors were respected...That is not the situation today."
