''മനുഷ്യന് മനുഷ്യന്‍ അന്യനാകുന്ന ഒരു വ്യവസ്ഥിതി മാറ്റിത്തീര്‍ക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടി സുദീര്‍ഘമായ ജയില്‍ജീവിതം നയിക്കേണ്ടി വന്ന മണ്ടേലയില്‍ നിന്ന് നാം മനുഷ്യര്‍ എന്തുപഠിക്കുന്നു? മനുഷ്യക്കോട്ടകളും ചങ്ങലകളും അഴിഞ്ഞുലയുന്ന കാലമെത്തുമ്പോള്‍ നന്മയെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള കുട്ടിക്കിനാക്കളെ ഞെരിച്ചുകൊല്ലുന്ന ആശയസംഹിതകളുടെ ചുറ്റുവട്ടത്തിന്നപ്പുറത്ത് തിന്മയുടെ കരാളതയക്ക് സ്വന്തം ആത്മാവ് കൊണ്ട് പ്രതിരോധം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന നെല്‍സണ്‍ മണ്ടേല അഹിംസയുടെ വിത്ത് നൂറുകൊല്ലമായി കിടന്നുവിളയാന്‍ അവസരം തേടുന്ന തെക്കേ ആഫ്രിക്കയില്‍ പിറന്നുവളര്‍ന്നത് ഒരത്ഭുതമേയല്ല. ചവിട്ടിമെതിക്കപ്പെടുമ്പോള്‍ മാത്രം കൂമ്പിന് കരുത്ത് ലഭിക്കുന്ന കദളീവൃക്ഷമാണ് മനുഷ്യത്വമെന്നാണല്ലോ ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടും നമുക്ക് വെളിവാക്കിത്തന്നത്. കറുപ്പിലെ വെളുപ്പും വെളുപ്പിലെ കറുപ്പും കാണാന്‍ സാധിക്കുന്ന ചരിത്രസന്ദര്‍ഭമാണ് മണ്ടേലയുടെ ജീവിതം. നിഷേധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത് മാത്രമേ നേടാന്‍ കഴിയൂ എന്ന് നാം മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നു. കടുത്ത ശത്രുവില്‍ പോലും ആത്യന്തികമായ നന്മയുണ്ടെന്ന് ബോധ്യം വരുന്നത് വരെ നാം ഒന്നും പഠിക്കുന്നില്ല. മണ്ടേലയുടെ പീഢനകഥ മനുഷ്യരാശിയുടെ അവബോധവികാസത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രരേഖയാണ്.

നിരന്ന് പരന്നു വിരിഞ്ഞ് ഒഴുകിപ്പോകുന്നു.
അവ ഒരു ചിത്രം രചിക്കുന്നു. ആകാശമധ്യത്തില്‍
ആ ചിത്രം മണ്ടേലയുടെ മുഖത്തെ ഓര്‍മിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.'' - അയ്യപ്പപ്പണിക്കര്‍
