Skype-based Teaching in TN Government Schools Soon :-
Smart classrooms and access to quality teaching may soon stop being the prerogative of elite private schools.
Even students of select government-run schools could be in for some high-tech learning experience with the Tamil Nadu Education Department gearing up to introduce lessons through Skype, the free Internet video call service.
Such videoconferencing classrooms have been planned across Tamil Nadu and in the southern districts, five schools have been chosen for the pilot project, according to Madurai Chief Education Officer Amuthavalli. The project is expected to be launched by Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa once the infrastructure is in place, she added.
"This e-learning platform would enable us to conduct live distance education classes. This means a few trainers and teachers would be able to simultaneously reach out to students in multiple remote classrooms using the Internet," Amuthavalli explained.
It would be the first time Information Communication Technology (ICT) would be meaningfully deployed in government schools to bring about a social collaboration among teachers and students. If the concept succeeds, the project would come as a boon particularly for students studying in remote places as experienced and quality teachers from different parts of the state would handle classes for them via Skype.
"The high and higher secondary school students will also get to regularly interact with students from other districts. Special classes would also be conducted through videoconferencing," she added. Webcam, speaker and data card have been set up in five schools in southern Tamil Nadu for the purpose. By the end of this month around 160 Science, Math and English teachers would undergo a day's training on using Information Communication Technology in Madurai.
