Google reunites 2 friends separated by Partition India Today / Story / Nov 14, 2013 It took a long time coming, but here it is nevertheless. The new Google ad, titled "Reunion", touches the raw nerves that linger dormant under the skin of those who were separated during the heady days of Partition. The photo Baldev shows his granddaughter Suman. The ad opens with an elderly an named Baldev showing a crinkled black and white photograph of himself and his childhood friend Yusuf to his granddaughter, Suman. After searching on Google, Suman makes a call to Lahore. Baldev reminisces about how the two used to fly kites and steal Jhajariyas, (a delicacy made of corn, milk, ghee and sugar garnished with raisins and nuts, somewhat similar to jalebi and imarti) and spend the day in a park which had an ancient gate in Lahore. In Lahore, Yusuf looks stunned on receiving a call from Suman in Delhi. Using this information, Suman begins the hunt for Yusuf on Google and manages to track him down to a sweet shop in Lahore's Mochi Gate. Yusuf's grandson makes arrangements to go to India. A phone call puts her through to a young man who appears to be Yusuf's grandson. Using Google, the young man arranges for an India visa for himself and Yusuf and even checks the weather on Google during packing. Sitting in a park with his granddaughter, Baldev remembers Yusuf. In the end, Baldev and Yusuf reunite. While this may have been only an ad, there are many people both in Pakistan and India who will be able to relate to this emotional ad. When Baldev and Yusuf meet. The ad ends with both Baldev and Yusuf sitting in the rain. The 3 minute video, titled Reunion, has racked up more than 6 million hits since it was posted online. |
