Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope, confidence.

For sholay film buffs…

Jai and Veeru to reunite in Sholay 3D

The 3D version to release on September 13.

(Me: The 1975 movie is still rated the finest India-made cult film. The fearsome dacoit, Gabbar Singh's, henchmen on horseback chasing the goods train is the most thrilling sequence ever filmed. The movie's dialogue soundtrack became a mega hit. The biggest multi-starrer ever, Amitabh, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachhan and dozen other lesser mortals, and finest entertainer, it had high drama, action, the hum-nahi-thodenge-kind dosti, comedy, memorable dialogues, love, a couple of memorable dance sequences – one by Helen and the other by Hema - melancholy of a belle at the death of her young husband, et al )

From the world of science…

Maintaining a good posture protects you from should and back pain.

A stroll around the office campus post lunch will prevent you from feeling drowsy and is great for your heart.

Soyabean compound could inhibit HIV

US Researchers have found that genistein, derived from soybeans and other plants, may become an effective HIV treatment. Genistein is a "tyrosine kinase inhibitor" that works by blocking the communication from a cell's surface sensors to its interior.

Scientists creae teeth from human urine.

London: Stem cells obtained from urine could one day allow humans to regrow lost teeth: scientists.

Low levels of iron could increase risk of dementia.

Weird world…

Woman discovers she is pregnant 15 hours before giving birth.

Amanda R, 41, had gone to her GP with a stomach cramp, thinking she just needed medicine for constipation. But he sent her to see a midwife instead – and a scan revealed she was at least seven months gone. Her daughter was born hours later..

News of the day…

Christians most literate: survey during 2009-2010. Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Jainism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism were explicitly considered for data collection in the survey.

Christians that run the most sought-after educational institutions in the country are followed by Hindus and Muslim.

In urban centres, the Christian males were placed at 94% (women 88%), the Hindus at 91% (women (77.7%), Sikhs 86% (women 76.5%), Muslims 81% (women 65.5%).

(The statistical data is telltale: The other communities at the bottom, instead of blaming the government for anything and everything should introspect why they lag behind and do something concrete. For, education, whatever the drawbacks in the system, is the only way you can improve your lot)

Ron: Do you know how an Easter bunny stays in shape?

Tongue in cheek…

"If two wrongs don't make a right, try three!" – Laurence J. Peter.

Three drunks hail a taxi. The driver, having judged their condition, switches on the engine and after some time, switches it off, and tells them they've arrived. The first guy pays the fare, the second thanks him, and the third slaps him.

The taxi driver is stunned because he'd thought none of them would realize the taxi hadn't moved an inch. "What was that for?" he asks.

"Next time, control your speed. You almost killed us," says the drunk.

Some fine parts from a wonderful piece, India's Poverty Industry, in TOI, today, by BG Varghese, the respected ex-editor, Hindustan Times and a very senior journalist..

"All too many critics trade emotionally and ideologically in poverty. They fear that if poverty goes down or if the 'oppressed masses' are liberated they might be out of business and face a sharp fall in their political and social stock"

(Me: Tongue in cheek indeed!)

"India remains a poor country. No doubt about that. Itshuman development indices are a shame. We know that"

(Me: No, not many Indians know that; on the contrary, they and the younger generation kids think we are already a SUPER POWER!. Our ex-Prez. Abdul Kalam made a passing comment some 2-3 years ago, that we could become a super power by 2020 if we could make our potential come true. This comment has been so much tom-tommed about over and over in the country that the kids believe we are already one!)

"Word has come of tribal children in Attapady in Palghat district dying of malnutrition in a state like Kerala which boasts the highest HDI in India. Likewise in the adjacent Silent Valley home to other tribal communities. The Kerala trial belts have been kept outside the purview of the protective Fifty Schedule of the Constitution. Silent Valey has been skipped from development and kept as a nature reserve as a result of the exertions of many environmental champions. But who answers for or protests tribal deaths there and elsewhere in Kerala or India? Once the environmental battle is "won", tribals are left to suffer deprivation and death, qietly and unmourned in pristine surroundings."

(Me: Mr. Varghese has truly hammered home some basic truths. I, for never, have been impressed or amused by our ecological-wallas; they are all busybodies, hobby-horse riders and pettyfoggers. Deforestation isn't always caused by being large-scale industrialization there – India's burgeoning population needs space to live in, and the cost of land having reached the stratosphere, they are left with no option but to occupy forest lands for free. Secondly, industrialization is the need of the hour wherever possible for jobs for the unemployed millions. Question is: do we make jobs available to people or vaguely and quixotically talk of it causing ecological imbalances as if the rest of the world follow it in letter or spirit)
