[www.keralites.net] PICTURES OF THE WEEK

Pictures of the week: From the dramatic rescue of a baby flushed down a toilet to a 'Manhattanhenge'
Here's pick of the best pictures from around the world this week...

1. New Yorkers watch this glorious sunset during the biannual occurrence known locally as "Manhattanhenge". This is when the setting sun aligns itself with the grid of streets in Manhattan, New York, allowing the sun to shine down all of the streets at the same time (Reuters)

2. Steve Oxford (in white apron) stands proudly with his impressive piece of history - the world's biggest sponge cake. The monster Victoria sponge is 5ft in diameter and 15in in height and was made with 600 eggs, 50lb of flour and 50lb of sugar. Possibly a bit more artistry in the decorating? (SWNS)

3. Karate pose! This hiker pays no attention to the dizzying height on Trolltunga - or Troll's Tongue - in southern Norway (Caters)Karate pose! This hiker pays no attention to the dizzying height on Trolltunga - or Troll's Tongue - in southern Norway (Caters)

4. Flaming arrows are launched into the sky by archers of the Purbrook Bowmen, from Southsea castle. The display marks the opening of the Mary Rose museum where the artefacts and wreckage of the Tudor warship will be exhibited (PA)

5. The jagged rocks of the Sierra Mountain Range taken by Jody Macdonald , 37 - both a talented photographer and paraglider (Jody Macdonald/Caters)

6. Anyone in need of first aid? Competitors take the annual Cheese Rolling event very seriously as they tumble, roll and somersault down Cooper's Hill, Gloucestershire, to catch the cheese (PA)

7. A baby capybara alongside its mother at the Paignton Zoo in Devon. A capybara is a type of rodent and while this pair are perfectly safe here they are hunted for their meat and skin in South America (SWNS)

8. Sealed with a kss: Vincent Autin (r) and Bruno Boileau mark their marriage with a kiss on the balcony in front of a large crowd at the city hall in Montpellier, France. The two men are the first to marry in the country after fierce protests from far-Right groups and religious opponents (Reuters)

9. Stuff of nightmares: Dressed in a terrifying mask and blood-red clothes a participant of the "Diablos Danzantes" (Dancing Devils) of Yare joins a dance to mark the Feast of Corpus Christi, a Christian tradition, in Venezuela (Reuters)

10. A soldier in flip-flops walks among the debris after a riot between Muslims and Buddhists in Lashion township, Myanmar. Ultra-nationalist Buddhist violence targeting Muslims has worsened in the past few months. Thousands of Muslims, a marginalised minority, have been forced to flee from their homes (Reuters)

11. Lanterns float on the still water at sunset. They were released during a ceremony marking remembrance and reflection, held by the Shinnyo-en Buddhist organization, honouring victims of war, famine, and natural disasters on Memorial Day at Ala Moana beach park in Honolulu, Hawaii (Reuters)

12. Alive! The world was stunned when this baby was rescued from a sewage pipe after being flushed down a toilet in China. Luckily the baby known as 'Baby 59' - named after the number of his incubator - is healthy and the single 22-year-old mother has said it was an accident. The mother had hidden her pregnancy from her parents in a country where unmarried motherhood is stigmatised (Reuters)
