Re: [www.keralites.net] Re: [www.keralites.net] തൊപ്പി വെക്കുന്നതും, താടി വളര്‍ത്തുന്നതും,പര്‍ദ്ദ ധരിക്കുന്നതും

A teacher supposed to say no lies.

I studied in Kerala during this years. My graduation was from 1987-90.

The distinguish factors of girls at that time were

Hindu girls using Long skirt and upper jacket. There is "bindi" on forhead and also have sandal.
Muslim girls were using the same long skirt and upper jacket with long shawl around the neck, some times covering the head.

I wonder one thing

If a hindu girl/woman can observe her tradition like using mangalsutra, bindi on for head, sindoor for married, if a christian woman can use chain wih cross, then why can't a muslim girl use the dress of her own choice.

The God through the Holy Book Quran adviced man what to do and what not do. Regarding Purdah, Quran says " A woman must cover her body except her face and palm while going out". But the dress that she use to cover her body should not be tight and show her shape to others.
If somebody want to use let them use, if somebody do not want then do not use. This is because Islam says no compulsion in religion.

Before discussing all these issues, I request everybody to read Holy Quran to know more on Islam
http://quranmalayalam.com/quran/uni/index.htm

One thing is there -  by birth a person can not be Islam. Islam is a lifestyle. A person who obey the guidelines that given in the Quran will become a muslim and that path is called Islam. Even if he is from Hindu, Christian or Jew or muslim by birth are equal and can be a muslim by observing the guidelines.

I was a teacher working in a professional college in Kerala .Upto 1990 and around I could not distinguish between muslim/christian/hindu  female students unless they  had a religious  tag in their names (For example :Sahira for Mmuslim, Thomas for a Christian and Krishnan for Hindu etc).  Some names like Baby, Sajitha, Namitha, Neelima  etc have no religious tag in them. Now the situation has changed. 99 percent of Muslim students come to the college wearing  Maftha (Scarf) so that they can very easily be identified. When I asked one student about it, she told that she was doing it as instructed by her parents. I do not know what is behind  this change.

Nobel Peace Prize winner "Tawakkul Karman," 'The mother of Yemen's revolution,' when asked about her Hijab by journalists and how it is not proportionate with her level of intellect and education, replied:
"Man in early times was almost naked, and as his intellect evolved he started wearing clothes. What I am today and what I'm wearing represents the highest level of thought and civilization that man has achieved, and is not regressive. It's the removal of clothes again that is a regression back to the ancient times.

I do not want to offend any one's religious feelings with my comments. I am only saying what I have seen In Afghanistan, where you hardly see any lady  without Pardah..

I lived in Kandahar for more than one year as part of an international  organisation and I had about 50 local staff both men and women. One of the women, a post-graduate fluent in English used to wear Purdah while coming and going from office, but used to discard it once she enters office. I asked her, being educated abroad why she could not discard the purdah and show an example to the other less educated local women. She replied that she considers Purdah as the most oppressive thing that could be done to a woman and wearing it in the extreme heat of Kandahar was torture. But if she  does  not wear purdah  when she goes out, people would stone her. I had about about 25 other women  among the staff, who too discarded Purdah on entering the office.  But I could see women without Purdah occasionally on the streets of northern Afghanistan where the less conservative Tajiks live.
