'Punishment lifts performance'

London: Punishment can act as a performance enhancer in a similar way to monetary reward, a new study has claimed.  Researchers from the University of Nottingham looked at how the efficiency within which we make decisions based on ambiguous sensory information – such as visual or auditory – is affected by the potential for, and severity of, anticipated punishment.

(Me: Absolutely true.  Sadly, the current wisdom or fashion is to spare the rod and literally spoil the child.  Teachers and parents who even mildly admonished kids are severely reprimanded, criticized and even punished)

From the world of medicine…

Bitter cure for pancreatic cancer found…

London: The humble karela (bitter gourd/parikkai/kappakkai), it has emerged, is a giant slayer of pancreatic cancer cells.  A University of Colorado cancer study published in the journal 'Carcinogenesis' shows that bitter gourd juice restricts the ability of pancreatic cancer cells to metabolize glucose, thus cutting the cells' energy source and eventually killing them.  The reason this works is because cancer cells rely mostly on glucose for energy, having problems producing alternate forms of energy themselves.  Many researchers are engineering new drugs to target cancer cells' ability to supply themselves with energy, and here we have a naturally-occurring compound that may do just that, says a scientist.  Three years ago researchers showed the effect of bitter gourd extract on breast cancer cells only in a petri dish.  We show that it affects the glucose metabolism pathway to restrict energy and kill pancreatic cancer cells.

(Me: This is a new finding, although it is well known for years that bitter gourd helps diabetics to control their blood sugar levels to some extent.   Even though many people especially kids don't like it due to its bitter taste, karela is my most favourite of all vegetables and I love all preparations and dishes made out of it: sambhar, poricha kozhamu, poriyal, the sautered subzi in very little oil, and even the raw preparation where it is chopped into pieces and added with salt and with or without lemon juice)

Exercising during pregnancy can help you prime your body and strengthen your core for childbirth.

A study found that people who drank at least one cup of coffee daily had 20% lower risk of stroke.

I think you're the best looking girl in here.

(Me: u just think and aren't too sure?)

Weird world…

World's oldest can turns 27 years old..

The world's oldest cat has celebrated its 27th birthday, 125 in human years, surprising his owner and becoming a mini celebrity of sorts locally.  Waddy has defied the odds to reach the incredible milestone – which is 125 in human years – and his owner Ann Munday admits it is a miracle.

A mother was tucking her son into bed during a violent thunderstorm.  She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, "Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?"

The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug.  "I can't, dear," she said.  "I have to sleep with Daddy."

A long silence was broken at last by his shaky little voice, "The big sissy."

The judge frowned at the tired robber and said, "Then you admit breaking into the same store on three successive nights?"

"Yes, your honour."

"And why was that?"

"Because my wife wanted a dress."

The judge checked his records, "But it says you broke in three nights in a row!"

"Yes,  Sir.  She made exchange it twice."

Muddle headed thinking…

'Remove death penalty from law', says Amnesty International.

(Me: The entire journalistic fraternity, and most celebrities and socialites in India also echo similar sentiments claiming capital punishments do not deter potential criminals from committing heinous murders.  This is all hogwash: as the extremely low crime statistics in certain nations show, exemplary punishments, quickly executed, do bring down bring crime rate drastically.

Think it over…

"Right is right, even if everyone is against it, and wrong is wrong, even if everyone is for it" – William Penn.

(Me: More often, might is right, whether you agree or not)

THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

" What actions are most excellent? To gladden the heart of a human being, to feed the hungry, to help the afflicted to lighten the sorrow of the sorrowful and to remove the wrongs of injured.." -- Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Madness is better than sadness. And sadness is better than Badness.
