Indias pride and allalong a supportive daughter,sister, wife and a caringmotherthis is Mumtaz Kazi,the first woman diesel engine
driver in Asia. Limca Book ofRecords, in its 1995 edition,has acknowledged her success.Adding another feather to her cap
is that she is the first train driverwho has the skill of driving bothElectric and Diesel engine.In 1989, the change in the
railway recruitment board policyin India enabled her to get intothe exam and she fared verywell with the merits in all the
exams right from written examsto Personal Interview. With anexperience of nearly 20 years,she is now serving the most
crowded railways in the world,the Mumbai Local.Born and brought up in Mumbai,Mumtaz has seen many upsand downs in life, but familysupport kept her moving.After completing schoolingfrom the Seth Anandilal PoddarHigh school, Mumtaz applied for the motorman job after herSSC in 1989. She got appointedin 1991 after the completion ofher twelfth exam. But this was
resisted by her father. WhenI was selected, my father,Allahrakhu Ismail Kathawala,who himself was in the Railwaysas the Trunk Superintendentat Churchgate railway stationresisted and asked me tocomplete my DMLT course,says Mumtaz in an interaction
with TwoCircles.net.But A.I. Kathawala, as herfather was popularly known,was advised by his friends inrailways and other relatives toallow Mumtaz to take up thejob. R.V. Raikar uncle, whowas a close friend of my father,finally succeeded and convinced
my father, informs Mumtaz.A.I. Kathawala said, I am reallyproud of my daughter becauseshe is not only successful in her
profession, but also because shechanged the life of my family.Kathawala continued to praiseher courageous daughter. He
said its because of her support,he was able to buy a home inMumbai and was able to educatehis two sons, Imtiyaz and Feroz,
who are both engineers andnow settled in Canada.Mumtaz married MaqsoodKazi, an electrical engineerfrom Nandoorbar, a district
of Maharashtra near Gujaratborder. Now she is a mother oftwo beautiful children, TausifAhmed, 8 and Fateen, 4.Maqsood, the proud husband ofMumtaz said: She is a lovelyhousewife and a very caringmother. He added, To takecare of our kids, Mumtaz opted
to leave the due promotion,but Allah will give her the bestreward.BBC had portrayed Mumtazin their documentary on Indian
Railways. Mamta Kulkarni, thefirst woman Station Master inCentral Railway, is a good friendand colleague of Mumtaz. Shesaid, Mumtaz has receivedthe Railways General Manager award, Divisional RailwayManager award and many more
