London to Brighton with Genevieve

This year more than 500 veteran cars took part in the 115th anniversary of the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. The weather held for what turned out to be a rather special day, and photographer Lara Platman had the honour of travelling with Genevieve, the car made famous by the 1953 film of the same name.

The event is held to mark the first run in 1896 when 33 pioneering motorists set off in a variety of innovative 19th Century horseless carriages to demonstrate and promote the capabilities of the motor car. The wide variety of participating motor cars included electric, steam and internal combustion engine propulsion technology. In addition, they celebrated the new Road Act of that year which increased the speed limit from 4mph to 14mph and abandoned the need for a man on foot waving a red flag to precede each motor vehicle.

This year there were a number of well-known faces making the journey from London to Brighton, including ex-F1 driver Jochen Mass who was behind the wheel. Owner Alexandre Schroder-Frerkes (left) said of car 492: "It always needs a good push up the hill but we are Germans, we will finish."

This weekend Genevieve's rival in film, Spyker, had a few problems getting out of London because of the heavy traffic

Ben Cussons, chairman of Royal Automobile Club, drove the MMC 1900, which experienced a problem on Westminster Bridge - but he managed to fix it and was on his way again

The Salvesen steam vehicle, built in 1896, makes a scheduled water stop. The water is taken directly from the mains on pavements along the London to Brighton route

At some stage during the run, everyone stops to fill up with petrol

This 1903 Panhard Lavasser car has been on the London to Brighton run 24 times and was initially driven by Mr Bryan Firth (seated in the rear), but for the past 14 years Kath Barley has sat behind the wheel for the run to the coast. Mr Firth's yellow leather longcoat was made specially for the veteran car run 22 years ago so he could keep warm and dry

Spyker and Genevieve arrived at the final checkpoint in Brighton together before heading down to Meridian drive on the seafront. Genevieve usually arrives in Brighton at 10:30 but on this day they both arrived at 13:00 - just in time for an old-fashioned picnic lunch on the front
