രക്ഷാബന്ധന്‍ അഥവാ 'രാഖി' ഹിന്ദുക്കളുടെയിടയില്‍ പരിപാവനമായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ആഘോഷമാണ്. ശ്രാവണമാസത്തിലെ, പൗര്‍ണ്ണമിദിവസം ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ ഉത്സവം വടക്കെ ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ 'ശ്രാവണി' എന്ന പേരിലും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. സാഹോദര സ്‌നേഹത്തിന്റെ പവിത്രത എടുത്ത് കാണിക്കുന്നതാണ് ഇതിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകത. രാഖിയുടെ ഐതിഹ്യം ഇങ്ങനെയാണ്. ഒരിക്കല്‍ ദേവന്മാരും അസുരന്മാരും തമ്മില്‍ യുദ്ധം നടന്നു.ദേവന്മാര്‍ പരാജയപ്പെടാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോള്‍ ഇന്ദ്രന്റെ പത്‌നിയായ 'ശചി' ഇന്ദ്രന്റെ കയ്യില്‍ രക്ഷയ്ക്കായി, രാഖി കെട്ടികൊടുക്കുകയും, ഈ രക്ഷാസൂത്രത്തിന്റെ ബലത്തില്‍, ഇന്ദ്രന്‍ ശത്രുക്കളെ പരാജയപ്പെടുത്താന്‍ ശക്തി നേടി. വിജയവുമായി തിരിച്ച് വന്ന ആ ദിവസം മുതലാണ് 'രക്ഷാബന്ധന്‍' ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. പിന്നീട് സഹോദരി സഹോദരന്റെ കൈകളില്‍ രാഖി കെട്ടുന്ന ചടങ്ങ് പ്രചാരത്തില്‍ വന്നു. രാഖിയുടെ നൂലുകള്‍ക്ക് അത്ഭുതശക്തിയുണ്ടെന്നാണ് വിശ്വസിച്ച് വരുന്നത്. ഇത് സംബന്ധിച്ച് പല ചരിത്രസംഭവങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട്. സിക്കന്ദറും പുരുവും തമ്മിലുള്ള ചരിത്രപ്രധാനമായ യുദ്ധം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ്, സിക്കന്ദറുടെ കാമുകി, പുരുവിനെ സമീപിക്കുകയും, കൈകളില്‍ രാഖി കെട്ടിച്ച് സഹോദരനാക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത്, യുദ്ധത്തില്‍ സിക്കന്ദറെ വധിക്കുകയില്ല എന്ന ഒരു സത്യവചനവും വാങ്ങി. പുരു കൊടുത്ത വാക്ക് പാലിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. രക്ഷാബന്ധന്റെ മഹത്ത്വം കാണിക്കുന്ന സംഭവമാണ് ഇത്. സഹോദരി രക്ഷാബന്ധന്‍ ദിവസം മധുരപലഹാരങ്ങളും,രാഖിയും, ദീപവും നിറച്ച് വച്ച താലവുമായി, സഹോദരനെ സമീപിച്ച്, ദീപം ഉഴിഞ്ഞ്, തിലകം ചാര്‍ത്തി, ദീര്‍ഘായുസ്സിനും നന്മയ്ക്കും വേണ്ടി പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥിക്കുകയും കൈയില്‍ വര്‍ണ്ണ നൂലുകളാല്‍ അലങ്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ട സുന്ദരമായ രാഖി കെട്ടികൊടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. സഹോദരന്‍ ആജീവാനന്തം അവളെ സംരക്ഷിക്കുവാനും പരിപാലിക്കുവാനും വചനമെടുക്കുന്നു. ഉപഹാരമായി പണമോ വസ്ത്രമോ സഹോദരിക്ക് നല്‍കുന്നു.
