How to Avoid Getting Sick During Cold and Flu Season

For most people, getting a cold or flu during the colder months is a yearly occurrence. Many viruses, including those responsible for causing the flu, love cold, dry weather and therefore multiply quickly during winter.

These viruses are also highly contagious, spreading from person to person via respiratory droplets. Contact can happen by direct bodily contact like kissing, or touching something that has been in contact with the virus, like shaking hands with someone and then touching your nose, eyes or mouth.

Preventing the Spread of Germs

Therefore, reducing the spread of germs is key to avoiding getting sick. Consider the following tips to prevent spreading viruses and other microbes.

Wash Your Hands

This is one of the best ways to stop the spread of many microbes you come across, not just the viruses that cause colds and flu; as many as 80% of infections spread by touch, according to the CDC.

Use soap and water and scrub thoroughly for at least 20 seconds. If water and soap are not available, use a hand sanitizer.

Certain things you touch carry more germs than others. A 2011 study featured in Life Science revealed the surfaces that have very high levels of contamination – enough to spread an illness. The number one spot is the gas pump handle, followed by mailbox handles, escalator rails, ATM buttons, parking meters and kiosks, crosswalk buttons and vending machine buttons. Other germ-ridden surfaces include cell phones and other electronic devices, public soap dispensers, airport bathrooms, tray counters, seat armrests and magazines.

Take extra care to wash your hands well after touching these things.

Disinfect

This doesn't mean that you have to wipe down everything you touch, but try to reduce the presence of microbes in your environment. Germs can live on a surface for hours, so if someone in your household is sick or if you take a trip to a new place, consider disinfecting areas like door knobs, remote controls or tabletops. You may also want to use disposable items such as cups or paper towels.

Cover Your Nose and Mouth

When you cough or sneeze, cover your nose and mouth – not with your hands, as you may have heard, but with the crook of your elbow. You can also use a tissue. This way the germs will not get on your hands and spread further.

Boosting Your Immune System

Preventing the spread of the germs is a good start, but likely not enough to avoid a cold or flu.. It is impossible to live in a completely sterile environment, as we are exposed each and every day to various microorganisms. The reason why we don't get infections from all these germs is because our immune system fights them.

If we look at infections from this perspective, an infection is not truly caused by a germ, the germ is just a trigger. It is rather a weakness of the immune system that allows that germ to multiply and infect the body. Therefore, the next important step to prevent colds and flu is to keep the immune system strong and healthy.

Eat Well

A healthy, clean diet is more important than you might think. Vitamins, minerals and antioxidants found in healthy food are essential for the health of your immune system. Adopt a healthy diet all year around and include plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, fish and lean meats, dairy products like yogurt and kefir, nuts and seeds and healthy oils for cooking.

Some foods are better than others when it comes to colds and flu prevention. Here are a few of them:

  • Fatty fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel, olive oil, and nuts and seeds contain high amounts of omega 3 fatty acids, which have strong anti-inflammatory qualities. These foods help prevent the chronic inflammation that can weaken the immune system, as well as reducing stress and anxiety, which can also predispose you to catching a cold.
  • Sesame and pumpkin seeds, turkey, lentils and quinoa are great sources of zinc. Zinc is a mineral with antioxidant qualities and has been found beneficial for limiting the progression and duration of colds.
  • Garlic can help fight colds, according to a 2001 study published in Advances in Therapy; people who took garlic supplements for 12 weeks during winter experienced fewer colds compared with the placebo group. The key ingredient of garlic is allicin, a strong antioxidant compound. You can choose to add more garlic to your diet, or take it in supplement form.
  • Yogurt and kefir contain good bacteria that promote a healthy digestive system and a strong immune system. A 2011 review study found that people who consumed probiotics, whether from foods or in supplement form – had a lower risk of infections of the respiratory tract than the placebo group.

Take Vitamin D

Diet can't provide enough vitamin D, as this nutrient is mainly made in your skin when exposed to sunlight. Unless you spend half an hour in the sun every day, you should take it in supplement form.

Some studies suggest that catching a cold or flu may be a symptom of an underlying deficiency of this nutrient, which is even more severe in the winter. Studies also confirm that vitamin D plays a crucial role in the health of the immune system, as it influences nearly 3000 genes and promotes the production of hundreds of anti-microbial substances.

Exercise Regularly

It is well know that staying active can help boost the immune system and your overall health. But studies have also found a link between colds and exercise. A 2010 study involving 1000 participants found that staying active and fit reduced the risk of catching a cold by almost 50%. Fit and active participants who did get colds had symptoms that were 30-40% less severe.

Advice From a Nutritionist

We were lucky enough to interview a professional nutrionist at Baba-mail, and she gave us a list of what she calls: "The most important things about food products people may not know.

printing this out and hanging it on the fridge!
1. Plastic work surfaces accumulate bacteria, soak them in water with vinegar. It's advisable and better to use wooden work surfaces, it turns out that they contain natural disinfectants.

2. Wines:
Red wine - shouldn't be used eight hours afteropening.
White wine - Keep refrigerated after opening and it can be used for the next 10-12 hours only.

3. "Stevia" - or 'sugar leaf' is a plant similar to mint, 30 times as sweet as sugar and has no calories. 1/3 of a leaf can sweeten a drink, and you can also purchase an extract.

4. If you want to freeze fruit, you should pour sugar on them prior to freezing and they retain the flavor.

5. Preparing the dough, use cold water in the winter and ice water in the summer  - to inflate the dough to its maximum height.

6. There is almost no difference between the percentages of fat in milk. Drinking milk is always at 3% fat. 0% fat milk is actually milk water (the water remaining in the process of churning cream, butter, cheese).

7. Separating plastic and margarine is one molecule only! Margarine contains transfat that does not not melt in your veins.

8. Melting cheese is the residue of hard white cheese, plus a yellow food coloring produced from coal tar and is considered one of the most dangerous food colors. It causes allergies and hyperactivity, especially in children, among other dangerous effects.

9. Egg shells have 100% calcium. If you have plants it's a good idea to water them with water and egg shells.

10. Olive oil put in the refrigerator thickens. Olive oil is not green, but gold. The more green it is , the more food coloring it contains.

11. Sugar and alcohol never freeze.

12. Strawberry is a pest magnet and so can be very harmful if not treated properly.

13. Soup powder is painted salt. You should not use it at all and it can be replaced with salt and pepper.

14. Black pepper or ground black pepper found in the supermarket - is not pepper. Buy only those that is ground on the spot.

15. You shouldn't be able to pour honey. Real honey is hard and remains so.

16. Puff pastry contains huge levels of fats - I don't recommend it. But if you
do, then remember that Puff pastry shouldn't be frozen after preparation.

17. Defrosting must be gradual - from the freezer to the fridge and not straight out.

18. All white sugar addicts - Eat whole wheat products slowly and your addiction will subside.

19Black olives, in rings or canned, are not black olives, but blackened olives.

21. Lettuce and corn - are not digested in the body.

22. Anyone who lacks vitamin B12, therei is a solution: Freshly crushed flax seeds and / or cashews.

23. It is recommended to prepare mashed potatos with red skin and crush them with a potato masher so as not to break the starch structure and accidently make a puree that is liquid and sticky.

24. Saccharin (fake sugar) = poison - do not use!

25. A spoon of sugar contains only 13-16 calories.

26. Tip of the week: "Look at what you buy and what the products actually contain - be intelligent consumers and not part of the herd"

27. Dairy products should be stored at the bottom of the fridge - where it's colder.

28. Eggs:

A.Wash hands after each touch of the eggs (remember where they come from).

B. Storing in refrigerator door is always better, away from other products and never left in the supermarket carton. If the door is not possible, place at the top of the refrigerator, where it's warmer, and avoid proximity to other products, especially meat / poultry / fish undergoing cooking.

C. Do not wash unless you use them immediately.

[www.keralites.net] : accupressure treatment for pain relief

Can You Relieve Pain With a Squeeze to the Hand?
..-
The Claim: Applying pressure to a dime-sized spot located between the thumb and forefinger can calm anxiety and pain, particularly headaches and dental pain. Acupuncturists treat this spot, called hegu, with needles, but a small device can put pressure on it as well.
The Verdict: Of the more than 300 Chinese acupuncture points, hegu in clinical practice seems to be one of the most useful—particularly for pain relief, doctors say. Hegu hasn't been sufficiently studied to prove conclusively it alleviates pain, but one well-designed study found it blunted the worst pain experienced during a medical procedure.

Aculief
Aculief's $30 clip applies constant pressure to the hegu spot.
It isn't known exactly how hegu works, says John C. Reed, director of inpatient services at the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. A recent human study found treating it with acupuncture needles increases blood flow to the face, an area where acupuncturists say it is likely to relieve pain. Other research suggests hegu may work by stimulating endorphins, proteins that are natural pain relievers, he adds.
A 2011 study by researchers at the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, examined the effect of pressing on the hegu point in cancer patients undergoing a procedure called bone-marrow aspiration, which can cause excruciating pain. The study found no difference in average pain levels in patients treated with pressure applied with a device on the hegu point to the same amount of pressure on a point a couple inches away on the top of the hand, which has no known benefit. But it did find that the proportion of patients with severe pain decreased in the hegu group. That suggests that hegu, pronounced her-goo in Mandarin Chinese, "takes the edge" off the worst pain, says study author Ting Bao, an oncologist and medical acupuncturist at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center in Baltimore.
Hegu is generally used by acupuncturists as part of a customized program that includes a variety of other acupuncture points, says Meredith St. John, academic dean of the New England School of Acupuncture, in Newton, Mass. For example, the points to treat a patient for anxiety would be different than those for treating someone with menstrual pain—but hegu would likely be a common denominator in both treatments, she adds.
Aculief Inc. of Carlsbad, Calif., sells a $30 clip that applies constant pressure to the spot. The company says it hasn't done any studies on the clip, but that its customers say it helps headaches and other pain.
To manipulate your own hegu point, acupuncturists say to put a thumb on top of the fleshy part between the thumb and forefinger of the opposite hand. Place your forefinger on the other side of the hand and press hard. If you're doing it right, it will hurt, Dr. Bao adds.
A minute or two may be enough, or you may need to try for longer—but benefits will start to decrease after about 20 to 40 minutes of steady pressure, Dr. Reed says. If you get no relief from pressing one hand, try the other one, acupuncturists add.
Pressing on hegu is generally safe, however, acupuncturists say pregnant women should avoid it. Traditional Chinese medicine texts say manipulating the point can induce labor.

[www.keralites.net] Birds Sing to Their Eggs, and This Song Might Help Their Babies Survive Climate Change.

Birds Sing to Their Eggs, and This Song Might Help Their Babies Survive Climate Change

Embryonic learning—things birds pick up from their parents while still in the egg—may play a bigger role than imagined.

A male zebra finch.  (  Graeme Chapman)

irds feeling the heat from warming weather may be able give their offspring an early weather advisory right through the eggshell—which could in turn help baby birds prepare for the forecast.

A new study shows that the songs zebra finches sing to their eggs late in development may give the young a head start in dealing with warm weather once they hatch.

Researchers have long known that birds like chickens or quails, which hatch fully capable of fending for themselves, can hear through their eggs—allowing them to imprint things like who their mother is. But or around 50 years, nobody believed anything happened inside the egg with birds that hatch dependent on their parents.
