[www.keralites.net] THE SCARY THINGS ABOUT LOW BLOOD PRESSURE

The Scary Thing About Low Blood Pressure
dizzy
Something as light as lightheadedness may signal something very harmful.
Lightheadedness can be a symptom of low blood pressure.
What is scary is that low blood pressure can have underlying causes that may be an indication of serious heart, endocrine or neurological disorders.
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood. It is determined by two factors:
Resistance to the flow of blood caused by the walls of the arterioles, smaller arteries
Amount of blood pumped by the left ventricle of the heart into the arteries
If less blood is being pumped into the arteries then the blood pressure tends to be lower. Also, if the arterioles are larger and more flexible they have less resistance to the flow of blood leading to low blood pressure values.
A low blood pressure reading is having a level that is 90/60mmHg, or lower. If only one of these numbers is also lower than its low blood pressure. A sudden fall in blood pressure can be dangerous. A change of just 20 mm Hg in either of the values can cause dizziness and fainting when the brain fails to receive an adequate supply of blood.
Why you need to worry about your low blood pressure values
Dizziness, lightheadedness, and the fainting like feeling is commonly experienced by people who have low blood pressure. When the blood pressure level falls, there is not enough oxygen-rich blood is being delivered to the brain, thus affecting its function. At this juncture, the person loses consciousness temporarily, medically called syncope. The symptoms tend to worsen when changing posture i.e. either from lying down or sitting, to standing up. Additionally, certain other symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating and nausea may also be felt.
In case of conditions like uncontrolled bleeding, severe infections or allergic reactions, when the value falls it can be life-threatening.
Low blood pressure is sometimes a warning signal for a medical condition like 'Shock' that can be fatal. Lack of blood flow implies that the cells and organs are not getting enough oxygen and nutrients to function properly. As a result there can be multiple organ damage. Shock requires immediate medical treatment and can get worse very rapidly.
It is always safe to discuss with your doctor regularly if you often feel dizzy and have low blood pressure. It is important to have the cause of your low blood pressure properly diagnosed. Once your doctor has diagnosed the underlying problem, the right diet and correct exercise program must be followed.
Who is at a risk for Low Blood Pressure?
Hypotension can affect people of all ages. However, people who take certain medicines—such as diuretics or other high blood pressure medicines are at an increased risk. Certain conditions like nervous system disorders (Parkinson's disease) and some heart conditions also increase the risk for hypotension. Other risk factors include being immobile (not being able to move around very much) for long periods, nutritional deficiencies, being out in the heat for a long time, endocrine disorders and pregnancy. Hypotension during pregnancy is normal and usually goes away after birth.
Home Remedies for Low Blood Pressure
Basil leaves (Tulsi) are very effective in normalizing blood pressure. Extract juice from about 15 basil leaves and add honey for flavor and take this juice in the morning on empty stomach . Drinking this juice at least once daily will be very beneficial home cure for low blood pressure.
Soak some raisins in a bowl of water overnight and eat it the first thing in the morning followed by a glass od water.
Drink a cup of raw beetroot juice twice daily for about one week.
In addition to these home remedies, do regular, mild exercise as it helps to promote blood flow. Repeated instances of feeling nauseated or giddy must be informed and consulted with the doctor to check if any of your prescription medications are causing a problem.
Don't ignore those dizzy spells. They can spell problems later.

[www.keralites.net] Why you can't ditch your cigarette?

Do You Ever Realise Why You Can't Ditch Your Cigarette?

Blowing smoke rings into oblivion after a wholesome meal is one of the life's little pleasures for smokers. But no matter how much gratification you derive from smoking, it is highly injurious for your health.
When everyone knows that smoking is injurious to your health, then why people cannot quit it? What makes kicking the butt so difficult? Let us know the main reasons that make smoking a difficult habit to break:
Nicotine high:
Every time you smoke, your gets hit with nicotine rush. An average chain smoker gets about 250 such hits in the brain in a day. This makes it very hard to quit. On an average, only one in every ten smokers is able to kick this habit.
Nicotine in cigarettes creates neural pathways in your brain. These pathways trick your brain into feelings of ecstasy, improved memory and enhanced focus levels. When you do not smoke, these pathways are shut down and you start craving for the sense of euphoria again that comes from dopamine.
Nicotine craving is the highest when you wake up in the morning. Most people take a puff as soon as they wake up to get a shot of dopamine through smoking.
Withdrawal reactions:
When a smoker is trying to quit the habit, many withdrawal reactions occur. Some of the common signs of nicotine withdrawal are:
-Feelings of restlessness
-Feeling irritable and edgy
-Sadness or feeling low
-Slow heart rate
-Brain fogging and difficulty in concentrating
-Sleeplessness or insomnia
-Weight gain
-Increased appetite
-Low energy
Countering these withdrawal symptoms is a difficult task for the smoker. It needs a very strong will power, medical help and a lot of support from family and friends to go through this phase. Many relapse due to lack of a support system.
Now let us discover ways that make giving up the smoking habit much easier for you:
Watch what you eat:
If you eat a chicken burger you are more likely to crave for a joint of smoke. Sumptuous non-veg meals make you enjoy smoking.
Eat a veggies burger instead. Vegetarian diet including fresh fruits and veggies will take away the zing of smoking and you will find your cigarette butt tasting like muck.
Screen your drinks:
Tea, coffee, carbonated drinks, alcohol enhance the taste of smoking and make you crave for another puff of nicotine.
Switch to healthy drinks like fresh fruit juices, water, tomato juice, smoothies and soups. This will curb your impulse to smoke and keep you healthy.
Improve your lung capacity:
Get some fresh air into your lungs through daily exercise. Even if you do some light stretches and walk for five to ten minutes in a day, it will bring in more oxygen to your lungs. This will curb craving for smoking.
Get safe alternatives:
Smoking is a habit. It will take alternatives to break this habit. Chewing gum, lozenge or using nasal inhalers are some of the safe alternatives your doctor will recommend to use whenever the urge to smoke arises.
Get a support group and psychotherapy:
Resolve to give up smoking is often challenged by severe urge to smoke. This may happen due to being in a smoking zone in a party, restaurant or flight, or come across a company of friends or colleagues who smoke. It is best to avoid such situations.
It is therefore crucial to get a support group, preferably of family and friends that help you stay positive every time you feel the tendency to take a puff or two. The mental and emotional support is important as it helps you maintain your focus on why you want to quit, perseverance and tenacity to give up smoking.
Psychotherapy may also be recommended by your doctor to deal with the emotional turbulence and feelings of sadness during the de-addiction phase.
Meeting with other ex-smokers who have refrained from smoking is another way to keep up your spirits during and after the de-addiction period.
Meditation helps:
Practicing meditation and deep breathing exercises helps relieve withdrawal symptoms of smoking. It helps relax your mind and body and boosts your immunity. Deep breathing helps increase oxygenation and clears chest congestion commonly found in smokers.
Meditation and pranayama keep you in a positive state of mind and prevent you from feeling anxious, sad, depressed or aggressive. This is essential for completing and sustaining de-addiction phase.
Discover the Herbs that help prevent the urge to smoke!
In Ayurveda, there are certain herbs that help you curb the urge to smoke. They are effective, have no side effects and safe to use. On a precautionary basis, consult an ayurvedic specialist to find the right dosage for you according to your body constitution and specific symptoms.
There are easy home remedies you can apply during and after de-addiction program. They are as follows:
Ginger:
Raw: Peel and cut 100 grams ginger into very small pieces. Add lemon juice to these ginger pieces. Dry them in the sun for a couple of days. Keep them in your pocket in a pack. Whenever you feel nauseous or crave for a puff, simply suck a piece in your mouth. The craving and nausea will subside.
Juice: Mix ginger juice and amla juice in an equal ratio. Take 1 tablespoon of this mixture 3 to 4 times a day to clear the chest congestion due to smoking and to curb the desire to smoke again.
Radish:
Raw: Eat raw radish sprinkled with lemon juice to clear away the bronchial congestion common in chronic smokers.
Juice: Mix radish juice and honey in 2:1 ratio. Take 1 tablespoon of this mixture twice a day to quit smoking.
Licorice:
Whenever you are craving for a puff of nicotine, just pop a stick of licorice in your mouth. Chew on the stick slowly and the urge for smoking will subside.
Cinnamon:
Mix cinnamon powder and honey in 3:1c ratio. Take half a teaspoon twice in a day to clear your lungs from mucus. Mucus deposition makes breathing difficult, creates anxiety and makes sleeping difficult. By clearing it away these symptoms are treated and urge to smoke is reduced.
Cayenne pepper:
Add 2-3 pinches of cayenne pepper in a glass of water. Drink it daily to reduce the craving for smoking.
Peppermint:
Peppermint has menthol content that helps alleviate craving for smoking. You can take it in the form of peppermint tea, gum or inhaler. It even treats an upset stomach that happens due to nicotine withdrawal.
Holy basil:
Take the extract of Holy basil leaves with some honey daily to curb nausea and urge for smoking.
Use these easy herbal remedies to keep the craving for a puff at bay. However ask your doctor before taking these herbs to ensure the right dosage and to prevent interference with other medication.
It is possible to get free from the clutches of smoking that does nothing but harm your body. Make up your mind to quit smoking and diligently follow a de-addiction regimen.
Kick the cigarette butt and say yes to life!

[www.keralites.net] Ayurvedic Treatment For Chronic Kidney Disease!

Is There Effective Ayurvedic Treatment For Chronic Kidney Disease?

The scariest thing about Kidney Disease is that most people suffering from it aren't aware of it!!!
Kidney diseases are explained in Ayurveda under mutra vaha sroto dushti, mutraghata, mutrakrcchra, ashmari and prameha. There are various kidney diseases and one among them is CKD- Chronic kidney disease.

What is chronic kidney disease?
Chronic kidney disease is also called chronic kidney failure. It is a condition in which the kidneys fail to adequately filter waste products from the blood. Your kidneys filter wastes and excess fluids from your blood which are then excreted in your urine. When chronic kidney disease reaches an advanced stage, dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes and wastes can build up in your body. Chronic kidney failure may be progressive and irreversible.

What are the causes for chronic kidney disease?
Uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure
Autoimmune diseases like HIV
Genetic diseases like polycystic kidney disease

Injuries to kidney
Prolonged intake of some medicines
Interstitial nephritis, an inflammation of the kidney's tubules and surrounding structures
Prolonged obstruction of the urinary tract, from conditions such as enlarged prostate, kidney stones and some cancers.

Vesicoureteral reflux, a condition that causes urine to back up into your kidneys
Recurrent kidney infection, also called pyelonephritis
What are the factors that increase your risk of chronic kidney disease?
Diabetes
High blood pressure
Heart disease
Smoking
Obesity
High cholesterol
Family history of kidney disease
What are the symptoms of chronic kidney disease?
Chronic kidney disease develops slowly. Initially there may be no symptoms. Below symptoms develop gradually once the accumulation of the waste products begin in the body.
Loss of appetite , bad taste in the mouth
Vomiting and diarrohea
Nausea
Weight loss and weakness
Variation in the frequency of urination
Blood in the urine, foamy or bubbly urine
Swelling of the legs, ankles, feet, face and hands
Difficulty in sleeping, lethargy and confusion
Darkening of the skin, itching
Shortness of breath due to extra fluid in the lungs
Abnormal heart rhythms
How can chronic kidney disease be diagnosed?
The diagnosis of kidney failure usually is made by blood tests measuring Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN), creatinine and glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
How can chronic kidney disease be treated?
The goal of treatment is to prevent or further slowdown the damage to your kidneys. Treatment of the underlying cause of kidney failure may return kidney function to normal.
If the kidneys fail completely, the only treatment options available may be dialysis or kidney transplantation.

What is Kidney Dialysis?
Kidney dialysis is a life-support treatment that uses a special machine to filter harmful wastes, salt and excess fluid from your blood.
There are two types of dialysis -hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
Patients often need dialysis treatments several times a week. Frequency of the dialysis depends on your level of kidney functioning, your body weight, amount of waste and fluid gathered in your blood since your last dialysis session.

Dialysis costs a lot of money. If your kidneys have failed, you will need to have dialysis treatment for your whole life unless you are able to get a kidney transplant.

How can kidney failure be prevented?
Lifelong efforts to control blood pressure and diabetes may be the best way to prevent chronic kidney disease and its progression to kidney failure.
Tips to follow-
Eat meals that are low in fat and cholesterol.
Get regular exercise
Keep your blood sugar and blood pressure under control.
Avoid eating too much salt or potassium
Give up smoking and alcohol intake
Limit fluid intake
Eat less protein
Is Ayurveda safe for Chronic Kidney Disease patients?
Definitely yes!
It is a commonly feared fact that Ayurvedic medicines contain heavy metals and are not suitable for certain medical conditions!

There are various Ayurvedic medicines which help to prevent the further deterioration of your kidneys.
They may also help decrease the frequency of dialysis.

Ayurvedic treatments significantly correct albuminuria and serum creatinine value and improve the renal function.

Ayurvedic medicines are usually safe and well-tolerated when prescribed by a qualified and knowledgeable Ayurvedic practitioner. However, some Ayurvedic preparations may risk toxicity when they are not manufactured according to the standards. Most of the time, people go by advertisements while buying medicines, instead of consulting qualified Ayurvedic doctors.

Few Ayurvedic medicines contain heavy metals called Rasaoushadis. These medicines are prepared after performing vigorous purifying techniques described in the Ayurvedic texts. There is a lot of research done at different levels to prove that a medicine is safe. Ayurvedic medicines have dosage and one must adhere to it. It is always safe to consult an eminent ayurvedic practitioner before taking any medicines.

Below are the Ayurvedic formulations which are beneficial in Chronic Kidney Disease-
Kashayams – Dashamoola kashayam, Punarnavadi kashayam, Mustadi kashayam and Brithyadi kashayam.
Tablets – Punarnavadi guggulu, Gokshuradi guggulu and Chandra prabha vati.

If CKD is caused due to uncontrolled blood sugar the following medicines are effective-
Nisa katakadi kashayam or Kataka kadhiradi kashayam.

Triphala and Musta churna- Mix Triphala churna and musta churna in equal proportion. Boil 1 tsp of churna in 1 glass of water and reduce to half glass. Drink twice a day before meals.
Nisha amalaki churna paniya- Soak 1 tsp of nisha amalaki churna in 1 glass of water overnight and drink next day morning in empty stomach.

Herbal teas that strengthen your kidneys
Grind and mix equal amount of musta, fennel seeds, cumin and coriander seeds. Boil 1 tsp of this powder in 1 glass of water and reduce to half glass. Drink twice a day.

Prepare a mixture of Punarnava- 1 part, gokshura- 1 part, fennel seed – 1 part. Take 1 tsp of this mixture 2 or 3 times a day after meals with warm water.

Here is a warning for those habitual pill-poppers!

Over-use of any drug may cause kidney damage. A drug that causes damage to the kidneys is called as a 'nephrotoxic drug.' Any sort of damage to the kidneys can make them inefficient to filter out the toxins it is exposed to everyday. These toxins then start accumulating in various tissues of the body and can even cause death. Most people are habitual pill -poppers, assuming nothing untoward will ever happen to them. A study highlighted that use of over-the-counter and prescription medications accounts for about 20 percent of cases of acute renal failure.

Improper and prolonged use of Allopathic drugs may damage your kidneys. Be aware!

Pain killers or analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) may lead to end stage kidney disease.

Certain drugs used in high blood pressure, anticonvulsants, malaria-treating drugs, and certain antibiotics have shown to favour renal failure.

Chemotherapy drugs
People who are diabetic or have cardiovascular diseases often take multiple medications which increase their chances of kidney damage.

Intake of few dietary supplements may also be a cause.

Prevention of kidney damage- Since you may not be able to avoid taking medicines under certain conditions, here are a few ways in which you can reduce damage to your kidneys-
Avoid self medication.

While taking over-the-counter drugs, check labels for warnings
Avoid habituating yourself to particular medicines such as sleeping pills or painkillers. Instead follow a healthy lifestyle, meditation and natural therapies like shiro dhara, abhyanga, etc.

Long-term consumption of drugs should be only under supervision.
Make sure you are taking appropriate dosage.
Drink adequate fluids to flush out the toxins.
Consume natural foods to avoid artificial nutrition supplements.
According to Ayurveda, there are thirteen types of natural urges in the body which should not be suppressed. These are the natural calls from body, which a person must attend to, as and when they appear in order to maintain the balance in the body and to prevent the manifestation of diseases. Urge to pass urine is one among them.
In our modern lifestyle, we find ourselves forcefully suppress the urge for urination while travelling due to unavailability of toilets, watching a favourite show in TV, etc. Prolonged suppression causes-
Pain in bladder and genital region
Pain and difficulty in micturition
Headache

Stone formation
Distension of lower abdomen
Avoid the suppression of urge to urinate and prevent the diseases.
Superficially the function of kidney seems to make urine, but it is no exaggeration to say kidneys are the master chemists to maintain our internal environment. A healthy outside starts from the inside. Follow a healthy life style to protect your kidneys for yourself and also others.
Almost 600,000 patients per year in the United States and an estimated 2 million patients worldwide are affected by end stage kidney disease. More than 90,000 patients in the United States are on the kidney transplant list, but each year there are less than 20,000 available donor kidneys. The need for donor kidneys is rising at 8% per year.
"You were born with the ability to change someone's life. Don't waste it. Become an organ donor".
