How to Treat Excess Stomach Gas and Bloating

 
A large percentage of the population suffers from stomach gas from time to time, yet it is rarely discussed, usually because we're too embarassed to say we're gassy. But folks, we all are sometimes, and there's absolutely no reason to be ashamed of it. It is a very uncomfortable feeling, and can cause real pain.

This is a problem that is becoming more prevalent due to modern food groups which encrouage the build-up of gas in our system. But there are easy way to fix this in your own home. 

Causes of stomach gas build-up 

- The main cause is poor digestion, meaning some undigested food remains in our colon and get fermented by the bacteria that live there. This process releases gas that builds up in our abdomen. Unfortunately, the most healthy and fiber rich foods are the ones hardest to digest, and so will often lead to gas build-up.

- Intolerance to certain types of food can also cause this effect.

- Constipation will often lead to excess gas.


Symptoms of stomach gas:

- Frequent passing of gas
- Feeling as if bloated
- Loss of appetite
- Abdomen feels 'tight'
- Belching
- Jabbing chest pain


Getting rid of the excess stomach gas

1. Lie Down or try different positions

Lie down and keep your head elevated, this position will help pass the discomfort you are feeling in a few minutes. Remain in this position until the discomfort you're feeling is gone. You can lie down on your side, but still keeping the head elevated.

If you are in distress, another position you can take is kneels on your head with your rear in the end, this will encourage the passing of gas from your system.

When you are trying to push the gas out of your abdomen, make sure to do so on an empty stomach or over a toilet.


2. Drink more

Having excess gas in your stomach is usually a sign of poor digestion, drinking plenty of fluid helps moving the undigested remnants of the food from the colon. This is especially true when we eat a lot of fiber rich food, when the undigested food particles accumulate in the colon. So drink up.

Hot liquids help the most, try herbal tea, but even coffee will help get that gas along.

Mustard is said to decrease the amount of gas in the body as well as preventing its build-up, so try and add it to one of your daily meals.

 
 
4. Baking Soda

Aid a spoonful of baking soda to a cup of hot water and mix well. Drink this every couple of hours for quick relief.
 
 
5. Add Indian spices 

Turmeric, cumin and cardamom are known to aid good digestion.


6. Add ginger

Adding ginger to your food or chew on the root will offer quick relief and aid your digestion.

7. Certain fruit can help.

Drink lemon juice or other citrus fruit juice. The papaya is a wonderful fruit to eat when bloated, and will help you get rid of that gas the fastest.

 8. Avoid carbonated drinks

Consuming carbonated drinks is a big no no if you want to decrease the amount of gas in the body. Drinking these will lead to an increase in gas and may also lead to chest pain.

-- Doctors always tell diabetics that it is important to maintain sugar , blood and cholesterol levels for better quality of life. Now, a study pinpoints how keeping these parameters under control ensures a long and quality life for people with type- 2 diabetes . 

A study by Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, published in medical journal Diabetes Carerecently shows that diabetics with better glycemic , blood pressure control and more favorable lipid profiles lived longer when compared to others . "Most non-survivors died due to heart attacks (46.4%) and renal failure (16.6%). Some of the long-term survivors also developed complications like problems of the eye , kidneys , heart , nerves and blood vessels ," said senior diabetologist Dr V Mohan . 

Although there have been many studies across the globe on long-term survivors with type-1 , there has been very limited studies on people with type-2 . "That is possibly because in mostcountries people get the disorder very late in life. But in India , many people are pre-disposed to the disorder because we have certain genes that put us at a higher risk of diabetes . Central obesity , decreased physical activity and food habits have increased the incidence of diabetes in India ," said diabetologist Dr Anjana Mohan Ranjit . 

From the database of the Dr Mohan's Diabetes Centre , the research team identified 238 patients with type-2 diabetes who had survived with 40 years of documented duration of diabetes . They also obtained data on 307 people who had died of various causes before 40 years of duration . Medical records of both the groups were reviewed and the biochemical and clinical data were recorded along with age , duration of diabetes , age and duration of diabetes and time of death . They also collected information about the family and smoking history , besides details of medications. 

The results did not come as a surprise . "But it confirmed what we already knew . Diabetes with obesity and hypertension kills," said epidemiologist Shanthi Rani . The results showed that obesity was present in 37 % of the non-survivors compared with 33.6% of long-term survivors . The meanBMI was also lesser among survivors . Most non-surviours died due to myocardial infarction and renal disease . Infections and cancer contributed the rest . "It appears reasonable to conclude that if T2DM patients do not die of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) or nephropathy within the first 20-30 years of T2DM, then they tend to live longer and die of other causes , including cancer ," she said . The long-term survivors were using more statin and insulin . However , data on the prevalence of complications among survivors were high , possibly due to longer duration of diabetes . Doctors say this made them slightly sick. For instance retinopathy was present in 76% of the survivors in this study . Microabluminuria was present in 8.4% and only one patient among the survivors required dialysis . "So the progression to end-stage renal disease appears to be uncommon . But the incidence of prevalence of renal disease was higher among the nonsurvivors ," said Dr Mohan. 

The most common complication among survivors was neuropathy (problems of the nerves ), which was reported in 86 .5% of the patients apart from peripheral vascular (blood vessels ) disease in 23 .1% of the survivors . Cardiac disease was diagnosed in 45% of patients . "The study is a reassurance that better control will lead to better quality of lifestyle ," he said.

In good news, Statue of Unity has surpassed the footfall of the Statue of Liberty in the United States, with an average of 15,000 visitors a day, in just over a year of its unveiling.

Netizens took to the micro-blogging site Twitter to express their delight over the news and thanking Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for the unveiling of the Statue of Unity, a tribute to India's first Home Minister, Vallabhbhai Patel popularly known as "Ironman of India". Since Saturday morning'#StatueofUnity' has been with over 2,000 tweets.

Statue of Unity, located in Gujarat is an epic bronze sculpture measuring 600 feet (182m), outsmarting China's Spring Temple Buddha (153m) and USA's Statue of Liberty (93m). It was designed and built in 33 months at a whopping cost of Rs.2,989 crore. Statue of Unity of Sardar Vallabhbai Patel was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on October 31 on the leader's birth anniversary.
