Excel is an amazing tool with fascinating capabilities to analyze data (be it using formulas, charts or dashboards). The ease with which data can be entered and stored in Excel makes it a compelling choice.
In this blog post, I have listed 10 useful Excel Data Entry tips that will make you more efficient and save a lot of time.
#1 Use Excel Data Entry Form
Excel Data Entry form enables you to add records in an existing data set. It gives a pop-up form that can be filled by the user. It is especially convenient when the data set has many columns and would require you to scroll right and left again and again as you key in data points.
Data Form feature is not already available in Excel ribbon. We first need to make it available by adding it to the Quick Access toolbar.
Adding Excel Data Entry Form to Quick Access Toolbar
  1. Go to Quick Access Toolbar, right-click and select Customize quick Access Toolbar
    Fun & Info @ Keralites.net
  2. In the Excel Options Dialogue box, Select All Commands and Go to Form. Select Form and press Add. This will add the Data Forms Icon to the Quick Access Toolbar.

Using Excel Data Entry Form
  1. Select any cell in the data range and click on the Data Form icon from the Quick Access Toolbar.
  2. In the Pop-up Data form, all the column titles are listed vertically. Fill the data to the adjacent text box for each heading.
  3. Once you have entered the data, press Enter
  4. Click on New to add new record
Using Excel Data Entry form, you can also navigate through the existing data (row by row), or find data by specifying the criteria (try this by clicking on the criteria button)
#2 Quickly Enter Numbers with Fixed Decimal Numbers
If you are in a situation where you have to manually enter data in excel that also has a decimal part to it, this trick could be mighty useful. For example, suppose you have to enter marks for students in percentage with up to 2 decimal points. You can enable a feature where you just type the numbers without bothering about hitting the dot key every time. To enable this:
  1. Go To File –> Options
  2. In the Excel Options Dialogue box select Advanced
  3. In Advanced Options, check the option "Automatically Insert a decimal point"
  4. Specify the number of decimals you want (for example 2 in this case)
Now, whenever you enter any number, excel automatically places last 2 digits after the decimal. So 1 becomes .01, 10 becomes 0.1, 100 becomes 1, 2467 becomes 24.67 and so on..
Once you are done with data entry, simply switch it off by un-checking the same option.
#3 Automatically Add Ordinal to Numbers
Yes, you can use a combination of excel functions (such as VALUE, RIGHT, IF, OR) to add ordinals ('st' in 1st, 'nd' in 2nd, and so on..).
Here is the formula:
=A1&IF(OR(VALUE(RIGHT(A1,2))={11,12,13}),"th",IF(OR(VALUE(RIGHT(A1))={1,2,3}),CHOOSE(RIGHT(A1),"st","nd","rd"),"th"))
#4 Fill Down Using Control + D
This is a nifty Excel Data Entry trick. If you have to copy the above cell, just press Control + D. It copies the content as well as the formatting. If there is a formula in the above cell, the formula is copied (with adjusted references).
This works for more than one cell as well. So if you want to copy the entire row above, select the current row and press Control + D.
If you select more than one cell/cells, than the cell above selection is copied in all the cells.
#5 Quickly Enter Date/Time in Excel Cells
Do not remember the current date? Don't worry, just press Control + ; (semi-colon Key) and it will enter the current date in the cell.
Similarly, you can enter current time by using the shortcut Control + Shift + : (colon key)
Remember, these are absolute values, and won't change if the date or time changes. If you want to have dynamic date and time value that changes whenever you opne the workbook or when there is a re-calculaiton, use TODAY and NOW functions.
#6 Control + Enter to Fill Entire Selection with Content in Active Cell
When you select multiple cells in Excel, one of the cells with light shade (as compared with the remaining selected cells) is the active cell. If you enter something in the active cell when the selection is made and press Control + Enter, the value is inserted in all the selected cells.
This holds true for formulas as well. If you enter formula in active cell and press Control + Enter, all the cells will get that formulas (with adjusted references).
#7 Alt + Down Arrow to Get a List of All Unique Values in that column
This one can save some time that you might otherwise waste in typing. Suppose you are entering data in a column with activity status (To be Done, Completed). Instead of typing the status again and again, you just need to type it in a couple of cells, and then you can use the keyboard shortcut Alt + Down arrow. It gives you the list all the unique entries, and you can quickly select from the list.
If you want to select from pre-specified options, create a drop down list using data validation.
#8 Quickly Sift through Multiple Worksheet Tabs in a Workbook
This one saves tons of time. Simply use the keyboard shortcut Control + Page Up/Page Down to navigate through multiple worksheet tabs in a workbook.
#9 Enter Long Text by Using Abbreviations
If you have to enter long names or keywords again and again in your worksheet, this trick would come in handy.
For example, you may want that whenever you type ABC, Excel should automatically replace it with ABC Technology Corporation Limited. Something as shown below:
This feature can be enabled using the autocorrect options. Read how to enable it.
#10 Enter Data in Non-Contiguous Ranges
Suppose you have a template as shown below, and you have to enter data in all the cells highlighted in red, in the order specified by the arrows.
Here is a quick way to do this:
  • Select all the cells where you need to enter the data (press control and then select one by one).
    • Start with the second cell in your sequence of data entry (start with D3). Select the first cell B3 (where data entry begins) at last.
  • Once selected, go to Name Box (which is on the left of the formula bar).
  • Type any name without spaces.
  • That's It!! Select the Named Range by clicking the Name Box drop down. Now start entering your data and use Enter/Tab to jump to the next cell.

[www.keralites.net] Here Are 8 Home Remedies for Getting Rid of Gingivitis

8 Natural Ways to Get Rid of Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a gum disease that is more common than you think. Anyone can get it. Bacteria that sit in your mouth can lead to plaque formation, which is a sticky film that irritates the gums and teeth. It's a mild disease and is characterized by redness, swelling, irritation and puffy gums. In the early stages most people don't know that they even have it. It can lead to gum recession along with loose teeth and bad breath. Here are some natural home remedies that can help you get rid of this annoying disease.
1. Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil is well known for oral health benefits and is a natural antibiotic and anti-inflammatory. Studies have found those with chronic gingivitis who brushed their teeth using tea tree oil toothpaste, had their inflammation reduced by half. It's important not to apply tea tree oil directly to the gums or swallow it in its pure form. it can irritate the gums and can cause diarrhea.
The best way to use this essential oil for your gums is by buying a special tea tree oil toothpaste, or adding a drop of tea tree oil to your regular toothpaste every time you brush your teeth.
2. Peppermint
Fun & Info @ Keralites.netA natural way to treat your gums for gingivitis is with peppermint due to it being antibacterial and antiseptic. Applying peppermint to your teeth and gums also reduces any inflammation and removes bacteria that cause bad breath.
You can crush peppermint leaves and soak them in water for thirty minutes. Use this solution as a mouthwash and rinse your mouth with it three times daily. Another way to apply peppermint is by drinking a strong cup of peppermint tea between meals. Alternatively brush your teeth and gums with a peppermint-flavored toothpaste.
3. Salt
This mineral with its antiseptic and antibacterial properties is effective in treating gum disease. The salt can treat any swollen or inflamed gums, draw infections out of abscesses and stop the growth of bacteria. The best way to apply salt is by rinsing your mouth with a saline salt mix twice daily. Add half a teaspoon of salt to a glass of lukewarm water and rinse in the mornings and evenings.
Another way to apply it is by making a paste with mustard oil. Add half a teaspoon of salt to mustard oil. Use as much oil needed until a paste forms. Massage this treatment into the gums using circular strokes for two minutes. Then gargle with warm water. Repeat this treatment twice daily until you notice results, which should be within a few days.
4. Guava leaves
Fun & Info @ Keralites.netDental studies have found that those with low vitamin C levels experience more gum disease. Traditionally 18th century sailors used to eat limes, a fruit high in vitamin C, to prevent bleeding gums. Although limes and oranges are high in vitamin C, an antioxidant which accelerates bone regeneration and helps repair connective tissues, guavas have higher amounts of the vitamin. Guava leaves are also anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and have analgesic properties. Guaijaverin, a plant flavonoid found in the leaves, is an effective antiplaque agent.
You can rinse your mouth with the leaves by chewing them and spitting them out. If this sounds unpleasant, you can grind the leaves and add it to your toothpaste, or buy mouthwash with guava leaf extract.
5. Lemon juice
Although guavas have higher dosages of vitamin C, lemon juice is easier to locate all year round. Lemons also contain antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help with gum disease. You can mix lemon juice with a glass of warm water and use this as a mouthwash. Rinse your mouth with this solution after brushing your teeth.
Alternatively you can make a paste with one tablespoon lemon juice and salt, and apply it to your gums, leaving it on for five minutes. Rinse off the paste with warm water and repeat four times a day until you notice an improvement.
6. Turmeric
Turmeric contains lots of curcumin, a natural anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant. This effectively lessens plaque, pain, swelling and gum inflammation. Curcumin also reduces bacterial activity, which prevents infection. Periodontists have found turmeric to be as effective as a traditional chlorhexidine mouthwash in fighting plaque, inflammation, and bacteria.
Fun & Info @ Keralites.netYou can apply turmeric as a paste: Mix one teaspoon turmeric powder with half a teaspoon of salt, and half a teaspoon of mustard oil. Apply and massage on your teeth and gums twice a day.
Another way to apply it is by making a gum pack. Mix half a teaspoon turmeric powder to a little water or vitamin E oil and apply this on your gums for ten minutes. Rinse with warm water, once a day for several weeks.
Alternatively you can make a paste of turmeric powder and a bit of water and brush it on your teeth with a soft-bristle toothbrush. This can be done twice a day for a few weeks.
7. Cranberry
Fun & Info @ Keralites.netCranberries are fruit that can help with gingivitis because they are able to prevent bacteria from sticking to the teeth. Since bacteria leads to gingivitis, this is a natural and tasty way to get rid of the disease. For this method to work the juice can't have any added sugar. You need to buy 100% cranberry juice. A supplement won't work either because the juice needs to be directly applied to your teeth.
Please note that cranberry juice as a treatment for gum disease is not recommended if you have kidney stones or take a blood thinning medication like warfarin. Please consult with your doctor in those cases.
8. Aloe Vera
This plant has both antibacterial and antifungal properties, which makes it a choice way to fight gingivitis. Applying this plant's pulp to the gums can prevent the accumulation of bacteria that cause plaque, a key cause of gingivitis. The soothing qualities of the plant can also relieve pain and inflamed gums.
The best way to extract the pulp is by opening the leaf with a knife. Rub the pulp on your gums and leave it there for ten minutes. Gargle with cold water and repeat this ritual several times a day until the gingivitis subsides.
