Hundreds trek to the forests in Thiruvananthapuram district to get treated by Lakshmikutty - source;NEWS MINUTE
Pictures : Sreekesh Raveendran Nair
She lives in a small hut with a palm leaves roof in a tribal settlement, deep in the forest of Kallar in Thiruvananthapuram district.
Lakshmikutty, a 75-year-old tribal woman is a poet, poison healer and teacher at Kerala Folklore Academy.
With medicinal herbs and plants surrounding her small hut, hundreds trek to the forests to visit Lakshmikutty, who offers herbal treatment for poisoning. But it's not only medicine that she has to offer but she also helps calm those affected with her gentle words, which can last for hours.
All her knowledge on herbal treatment, she says, was passed on from her mother, who worked as a midwife. And with neither Lakshmikutty nor her mother making a written record of the medicinal plants and their uses, the Kerala Forest Department has decided to compile a book based on her expertise.
"I can prepare about 500 medicinal treatments from memory. Till now I have not forgotten them. But people come here for poison treatment mainly snake or insect bites," she says.
Her dream, she says, is to convert her hut into a small hospital, where patients requiring long-term treatment can continue to stay.
Many fondly refer to her as 'Vanamuthassi' (Grandmother of the jungle in Malayalam) but she is more than just that. Lakshmikutty also gives lectures on natural medicine at various institutions across the southern states.
"I have visited many places outside the forest. Met many people, but I belong here. My heredity exists here," she notes.
It was in 1995 that Lakshmikutti got noticed by those outside her forest when she received the 'Naattu Vaidya Rathna' award (award for naturopathy) from the Kerala government.
"Till then people used to come here after hearing me from those I have already cured. Before 1995 people visited me from far off places but the number increased after I won the award," she recalls. With numerous awards under her belt since then, the latest came from the Indian Biodiversity Congress in 2016.
Her persistence made her the only tribal girl from her area to attend school in the 1950s. "I still wonder how I went to school. I was persistent that I go to school and my father finally had to agree," she laughs.  Together with two other boys from her settlement, Lakshmikutty walked 10 kilometres every day to get to school. She, however, studied only until class 8 as her school did not have higher education.
One of the boys she walked to school with, was her cousin Mathan Kaani, who she developed a deep friendship with, that eventually progressed to marriage. "He was with me in all my decisions and achievements. He used to tell me that I can achieve my goals even without him because I was a strong woman. He was the perfect partner from the day I got married at the age of 16 until he died last year," she recounts.
Not wanting their children to face the same challenges they had undergone as tribals living in the forest, Lakshmikutty and her husband provided their children with a good education.
"I was adamant that my children should study. Nobody in our settlement gets an education, I consider it valuable," she says.
But tragedy struck Lakshmikutty's family.
"The most painful incident I have gone through is my elder son's death. He was killed by a wild elephant," she recalls. Her younger son also died in an accident. Another son is working as chief ticket examiner for the railways.
But beyond the world of natural medicine, Lakshmikutty is also known for her satirical poems and writings. She has written numerous articles ranging from tribal culture to the forests, which have been published by DC Books.
Her poems, she observes, can be recited on a rhythm. "These are simple words anybody can recite, it's not in tribal language as you expect," she smiles.
And despite all that she's achieved, the 75-year-old woman insists, "The outer world has given me a lot, awards, honour, published books and so on. But I want to stay here. To live in the forest, you need courage."

[www.keralites.net] Psoriasis

A Helpful Guide to Treat Psoriasis Naturally!
Psoriasis (pronounced suh-ry-uh-sus) is a chronic skin condition, that causes extremely dry, flaky, and itchy skin. It results from the formation of extra skin cells on top of the epidermis, causing the skin to become thick and almost scaly in nature. Unfortunately, it's regarded by conventional medicine as a lifelong condition, with no permanent cure available as of yet. For a deeper understanding on what psoriasis will prove to be very helpful. Meanwhile, in this post we take a look at 10 home remedies and herbs you may use to alleviate the itchiness.

Using Natural Remedies with Care
To get all the benefits from the following herbs, most will require that you use their essential oils (natural extracts from the core of the plant). These oils should be applied topically. However, as they are very potent, they should be handled with care. With this in mind, essential oils should never be rubbed directly onto your skin unless they have been diluted with a carrier oil (such as a cold pressed coconut oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil, or sunflower oil).
Take a bath: Add 6 to 10 drops of the oils in a bath, diluted in 1 tablespoon milk or honey, dispersed in water. Mix the water in the bath well before entering.
Apply Topically: Add 12 drops of the essential oil to 1 fl.oz (30ml) carrier oil, and massage directly into the skin.
DISCLAIMER: While these natural remedies will help alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis, it is always important to consult with, and get a proper diagnosis from, a medical physician.
1. Aloe Vera Gel
Available in a gel form, aloe vera is a favorite home remedy for burns, sunburns, and insect bites. It's also one of the gentlest ingredients you can use for psoriasis, keeping your dry skin moisturized. It's especially useful when stepping out in the sun, protecting your skin from UVB-damage, and may also be used in the form of a carrier oil (as a base gel), whereby you can add 12 drops of one of the below oils to 1 fl.oz (30ml) aloe vera gel.
2. Calendula Essential Oil
The calendula plant, also known as pot marigold, works wonders on skin conditions because of its firming and hydrating properties. It can also prevent skin damage caused by the environment, aging, and weather changes.
3. Peppermint Essential Oil
Due to peppermint's cooling sensation, it's an effective remedy in relieving itchiness and discomfort caused by dryness. Used in moderation, it will prevent damage to already irritated skin.
4. St. John's Wort Essential Oil

St. John's wort has long traditions in herbal remedies. It's a popular plant used for its anti-depressant properties. However, it may also be applied topically to treat minor wounds, burns and skin irritations. St. John's wort has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-microbial properties, all of which are beneficial to people who suffer from this skin condition. Prior to use, it's important to consider any contraindications as it shouldn't be used with some medications.
5. Sunflower Seed Base Oil
Studies conducted on this base oil, have shown that it improves the health of the skin barrier, promoting elasticity and integrity, as well as improving overall hydration of the skin. It may be used alone, and is an excellent alternative to the more expensive moisturizing oils available, without compromising the oil's effectiveness to rehydrate the skin.
6. Licorice Essential Oil
The licorice plant has been found to alleviate symptoms associated with psoriasis. In a 2013 study, licorice extract was used on a dry, itchy, and inflamed scalp (similar symptoms to this skin condition). It was found that licorice was able to improve skin moisture and reduce itching and dryness. It was able to normalize the skin's lipids, improving hydration and texture of the scalp.
7. Tea Tree Essential Oil
Dry and cracked skin that results from psoriasis is often prone to wounds and infections. However, using tea tree essential oil can be beneficial in keeping skin bacteria-free. Tea tree extract is a natural antibiotic that can fight bacteria, viral, fungal, and protozoal infections found in the skin. Tea tree contains potent anti-inflammatory properties which can directly target inflammation caused by psoriasis.
8. Chamomile Essential Oil

Chamomile is an effective skin care ingredient for psoriasis. In a 2011 study, it was shown that German chamomile can relieve itching and inflammation when applied twice a day on skin lesions. Chamomile has also been shown to relieve the symptoms of atopic dermatitis by regulating the body's immune response system to allergens - this is especially important for people affected with psoriasis, whereby your skin immunity is altered and sensitivity is increased.
9. Gingko Biloba Essential Oil
This supplement is normally used for memory and neuronal health, however, it can also be used to maintain skin health. Applying the essential oil (blended with a carrier oil) to the skin will help moisturize deeply.
10. Garlic
This well-known anti-inflammatory agent is recommended for people with heart and blood vessel problems like coronary artery disease. Eating garlic, though, can also have effects on the skin too. Its potent anti-inflammatory property can improve skin inflammation that is caused by psoriasis.

[www.keralites.net] Sugar can do a lot than just sweeten

Sugar Can Do a Lot More than Just Sweeten!
Besides been the material we love to taste the most, sugar can help out with plenty of other things, and is always worth having around the house. We've collected a few of these uses for you to learn about - you'll never think of sugar as just a sweetener again!
uses for sugar
1. Calming babies:
Studies in Pediatrics show that babies who have been given a solution containing one spoon of sugar and four glasses of water before being vaccinated reacted more calmly to shots than those who didn't.
2. Treating wounds:
A pinch of sugar may help heal many types of wounds. Among them: Pressure wounds, ulcers and cuts. All you need to do is pour a little sugar on the wound and it will kill all the bacteria in the area and even relieve local chronic pain.
3. Treating a burnt tongue:
Sipping too quickly from a scolding coffee cup, biting into a steaming pizza, it's easy to burn your tongue, and that feeling isn't very pleasant. In order to alleviate this uncomfortable feeling, put a little sugar on the burnt area.
4. Body peeling:
Due to its rough texture, sugar can be used as a perfect peeling agent and offer great aid in your grooming routine. A simple peel can be made by mixing sugar with different kinds of oil (Canola, almond, jojoba or olive), as well as add essential oils to the mix or some vanilla abstract to upgrade the scent. An addition of vitamins in the form of a banana will help, and you can mash it and combine with three spoons of sugar and one of olive oil to create the peeling.

5. Cleaning dirty hands:
When the hands are very dirty (from color or grease, for instance), you can use sugar to remove the hard stains. The sugar will be added to soap foam and give it a good rub.
6. Nourishing the lips:
Mixing a little jojoba oil with olive oil with a drop of sugar powder and the mint or vanilla extract can create a natural moisturizing cream that's both intensive and extremely efficient at nourishing your lips. Smear some of it on your lips and gently rub.
lips
Also, if you want your lips to look better with lipstick on, just put a nice amount of sugar on the lips and allow it to absorb for several minutes.
7. Terminating pests:
If the roots of your garden plants are full of worms, you'll probably be happy to find out they can be killed using sugar. Bury 5 kilos of sugar for each 250 meter square of land, and wait patiently - the sugar will naturally kill all the worms.
Sugar can also be used to capture and kill other pests. To catch annoying flies, create a mixture of equal amounts of honey, sugar and water and boil it in a pot while stirring. Then take a square of sticky paper and create a hole on one end. Pour the mixture, after it cools, on the sticky side of the square and hang it on the wall with a string. The flies will go for the honey and stick to your smart trap.
To get rid of cockroaches, put equal amounts of sugar and baking powder near their hideouts. The sugar will draw them in while the baking powder will kill them.
8. Nourishing the roots of your flowers:
To give a better look to your home flower patch, you can use three teaspoons of sugar with two tablespoons of white vinegar for each liter of water we give them. The sugar will help nourish the stems while the vinegar will prevent bacteria from growing.
9. Cleaning grass stains:
Make a mixture from hot water and sugar and smear on clothes with grass stains. Allow it to soak into the clothes for about an hour or a bit more (depending on how covered it is in the stains), and then put in the laundry as usual.
10. Keeping food fresh:
If you put a cake or cookies in a sealed container in which a few sugar cubes are places, they will keep fresh for longer. Same goes for cheese.
