Four Ayurvedic Herbs and One Integrated Oil That Relieve Arthritis Better Than Medication

The following four Ayurvedic arthritis remedies have been used in ancient Indian medicines and in cooking for more than 5,000 years. And they really work--a study presented at a meeting of the American College of Rheumatology showed a combination herbal Ayurvedic therapy to be as effective in treating knee osteoarthritis as the commonly prescribed medication celecoxib (Celebrex).
1) Boswellia (Indian frankincense). This comes from the resin of theBoswellia serrata plant. It works by blocking an enzyme involved in the formation of leukotrienes, chemicals that trigger inflammation. Note:Boswellia may cause a reaction in people who are allergic to ragweed, and it can irritate the gastrointestinal tract (especially if taken alone rather than in a balanced combination formula as traditionally used) .
2) Turmeric. The active ingredient in this spice, curcumin, interferes with three important inflammation-producing enzymes--so it disrupts the inflammatory process at three different stages, said Dr. Lonsdorf. Turmeric also may provide some protection against the damage that pain-relieving medications can do to the gastrointestinal tract. Curcumin has been found to actually outperform pharmaceuticals while preventing disease.. Turmeric contains more than two dozen anti-inflammatory compounds, including sixdifferent COX-2-inhibitors (the COX-2 enzyme promotes pain, swelling and inflammation; inhibitors selectively block that enzyme). The component in turmeric most often cited for its healthful effects - is a multifaceted anti-inflammatory agent, and studies of the efficacy of curcumin have demonstrated positive changes in arthritic symptoms.
3) Ginger. Ginger is one of the best pain killers in the world having analgesic properties like the popular ibuprofen, only better. It contains a quartet, gingerols, paradols, shogaols, and zingerone which are active ingredients to reduce pain. Ginger reduces pain-causing prostaglandin levels in the body. A study by researchers found that when people who were suffering from arthritis pain were given ginger, they all experienced improvement. Various studies have demonstrated ginger's ability to reduce pain and inflammation by interfering with inflammatory enzymes.Bonus: Ginger also aids digestion. Why should that matter? Because according to Ayurvedic principals, poor digestion is a primary trigger for arthritis. Dr. Lonsdorf explained, "When we eat improper foods or our digestion is weak, food is not broken down into small molecules, so larger-than-normal molecules get absorbed into the bloodstream. These biochemical impurities circulate, eventually getting localized in a tissue and initiating swelling. When the affected tissue is a joint, the result is arthritis."
Ashwagandha. Ashwagandha or Indian winter cherry is considered one of the most important herbs in ayurvedic system of medicines. Because of its vast area of application, ayurvedic physicians have used it extensively in curing people from their ailments. It works in suppressing arthritis pain and any pain for that matter. It possesses this property due to its natural potency, which helps in eradicating pain Due to its properties it has gained lots of respect in the eyes of herbal healers. Lab studies suggest that it has anti-inflammatory properties that protect against cartilage damage. In addition, animal studies provide evidence that the herb combats stress. Dr. Lonsdorf explained, "When we are stressed, the hormones cortisol and epinephrine cause a breakdown of various body tissues. Ashwagandha helps alleviate the damaging effects of stress by restoring the proper hormonal balance to the nervous system, which in turn strengthens the immune system and further reduces inflammation."Caution: Since Ashwagandha makes your immune system more active, it is not appropriate for people who have an autoimmune disorder, including rheumatoid arthritis.

USING AYURVEDIC HERBS

Ayurvedic herbal products are available in health-food stores and online. For maximum convenience and effect, Dr. Lonsdorf recommended that osteoarthritis patients take an herbal supplement that combines several of the herbs and spices listed above as well as other natural ingredients that further support joint and bone health. These products may not contain turmeric, so Dr. Lonsdorf suggested using the spice liberally in the kitchen. "Turmeric added to food is more important than in a formula because you can get much a greater quantity that way. I recommend adding turmeric to every meal and cooking it into each dish, even if only in small amounts, for its cumulative anti-inflammatory and antioxidant protection," she said.
Important: According to a Boston University study, some commercial Ayurvedic herbal remedies contain lead, mercury and/or arsenic in amounts exceeding regulatory standards. Dr. Lonsdorf endorses Maharishi Ayurveda (www..mapi.com), a company that has been in business for nearly 30 years. If you are interested in a different brand, to guard against contamination, Dr. Lonsdorf suggested, "Contact the seller to make sure the company tests every batch in the US for heavy metals, as well as for parasites and fungus."

How To Increase Your Good Cholesterol (HDL)


devin and angelDid you know that even if you ate a completely cholesterol-free diet, your body would make approximately 1,000 mg daily to function properly?
So, thought the term 'cholesterol' always seems to be having a negative connotation, there is a lot of good side to it. On the other hand, too much cholesterol in the body can lead to serious problems like heart disease. Many factors can contribute to high cholesterol, but the best part is that there are different things you can do to control it.
What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a fat, or lipid. It is a sterol produced by the liver. It performs three main functions:
  1. It helps to build and maintain cell membrane.
  2. Bile Production – It makes up the bile acids that work to digest food in the intestine.
  3. Hormone Production – allows the body to make hormones, like estrogen in women and testosterone in men.
Cholesterol flows through our body via our bloodstream. Since cholesterol is not soluble in water it tends to not mix well with blood. Therefore, the liver packages it with protein and other compounds creating a lipoprotein before it is released into the blood stream. Cholesterol is then transported through the bloodstream in this lipoprotein.
HDL and LDL
When the lipoprotein has more protein than cholesterol, it is called high density lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol. When the lipoprotein has more cholesterol than protein, it is called low density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol.
Low-density lipoproteins tend to deposit cholesterol on artery walls. Gradually, over time it builds up and eventually interferes with blood flow. But the HDL is useful as it seems to take cholesterol back to the liver, where it can be eliminated from the body.
How to increase HDL ?
A colourful meal plate is a sure shot way of increasing HDL.
Niacin -Niacin is a B vitamin which is contained in a variety of foods. Niacin, in particular, helps to raise "good" cholesterol, and lowers "bad" cholesterol. Foods such as tuna, chicked, pork and liver are high in this vitamin content. Beef, mushrooms and avocado also contain niacin. Vegetarians can opt to take a B-complex vitamin as there are fewer options for them.
Nuts – Walnuts, almonds, peanuts, pistachios, peanuts hazelnuts are all good sources of heart-healthy fats and are great to add to your diet. You can eat them raw, baked or slightly roasted and even add to  dishes like pasta or rice. Watch the quantity though.
Olive oil – It is high in unsaturated fats and can help you elevate your HDL. You can replace butter and fried foods with foods cooked lightly in a heart-healthy olive oil. However remember, oil is healthy, but it's high in fat and calories, so practise moderation.
Fiber – Foods like oatmeal, bran, barley, prunes and apples having high level of fiber can help rise up your HDL while reducing LDL. A couple of servings a day of such foods can have a positive effect on your HDL.
Cut Your Sugar Intake
Cutting back on the "empty' carb calories that come from high sugar foods puts you on the right track of the HDL-LDL level in your body.
Regular Aerobic Exercise
Make exercise a priority now if you have been giving it a back seat till date. Every little effort you take counts and exercising is a tried and tested method of increasing HDL cholesterol over time. Regular aerobic exercise (any exercise, such as walking, jogging or cycling, that raises your heart rate for 20 to 30 minutes at a time) may be the most effective way to increase HDL levels.

Healing is highly effective in blood pressure, asthama, arthritis, sciatica, muscular pain, slipped disc, spine disorders, swelling, paralysis, neurological disorders, heart problems (he successfully treated a young patient who had a hole in his heart), etc. It cannot work against nature yet, one may help in seeking some relief but not a cure. "Interestingly, people approach me as a last resort with diseases or illness which I have never heard, still they stand benefitted," he said.

The Faculty of Medical Studies, Medicina Alternativa Institute affiliated to the Open International University for Complementary Medicines conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in Colombo in December 1996.
"If you ask me, my own health problems have been automatically cured when I started healing others. I do not have any bad habit, I do not even eat "supari." In fact, I am a non-believer, but I know there are powers beyond reasoning that work wonders it is for the scientists to explain how the phenomenon of healing flows from one body to the other."

He clarifies that there may not be spectacular or instant results although dramatic changes can be experienced in just one sitting spread over a few minutes. Improvement comes progressively in days, weeks and sometimes months depending on the nature of the disease, and also the receptivity of the patient. Changes for the better involve two dimensions: Firstly, the specific malady for which healing is sought and secondly, total wellbeing of the patient spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically. Thus, the cure is preventive in nature.
The 50-year-old unpretentious Mr. Joshi from Akola has made the entire country his home. He started experimenting with his spiritual powers 18-years ago. He is an arts graduate and a former bank employee and has now dedicated himself to his new avocation,not for money or fame, but to use his powers to serve the needy for no selfish gain.
It all started when an astrologer told him that he had a rare power which he could use for healing and giving succor to the people suffering from various physical and psychological ailments.
