Green tea fights off depression
Just thought to share this with you all
Apparently it say that if you drinking few cups of green tea that would help/reduced depression! I'm drinking one (organic tick tock) right now with squeeze of lovely thyme honey! Delicious!
In analyzing data on the study members, the scientists found that those who drank four or more cups of green tea each day were 44 percent less likely to have depressive symptoms (compared to those who drank one or fewer cups of green tea daily). Certain compounds in green tea may offer anti-stress and anti-inflammatory effects, which could in turn curb the development and progression of depressive symptoms
L-THEANINE
Green tea consumption may help to increase the levels of serotonin in your brain, according to an article published in 2009 in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition." The active ingredient most likely responsible for this effect is L-theanine, an amino acid found in green tea that can cross the blood-brain barrier and may be able to get the brain to produce more serotonin. Serotonin itself cannot cross the blood-brain barrier and must be produced in the brain if it is to be used in the brain.
BENEFITS
Medications that affect serotonin levels are often used to treat depression, as increased serotonin can minimize symptoms of depression. The "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" study found that elderly individuals who drank the most green tea had fewer symptoms of depression than those who drank the least green tea, even after adjusting for many other factors which could affect depression.
What exactly is L-theanine? Well L-Theanine is an amino acid found in green tea that has a soothing, calming effect on people who drink it. Drinking green tea containing theanine has been shown to stimulate production of brain waves known as alpha waves, these are seen when a person is in a relaxed state. It also alters levels of neurotransmitters in the brain such as serotonin and dopamine that can affect moods.
It's also believed that the theanines in green tea may help to reduce symptoms of anxiety. Despite the caffeine content, many people feel mellow after drinking a cup of green tea. This may be due to the theanine counteracting the effects of the caffeine. While theanine isn't in high doses in American green teas there are still smaller traces of it, so drinking the tea will still alleviate your mood and make you feel better
