14 Signs Of A Stroke You Should NEVER Ignore

A rapid response to someone having a stroke can mean the difference between minor damage and long-term disability. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, getting help for someone who may be suffering from a stroke within one hour is critical. Sadly, many stroke victims do not receive the emergency help that is needed to mitigate damage because many people are unaware of the early symptoms to look for.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke states that someone who receives a clot-dissolving drug within three hours of symptoms has a 30 percent greater chance of recovering without disability than someone who does not receive the drugs.

What is a stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is cut off (ischemic stroke) or when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures, dumping blood into the spaces surrounding the brain cells (hemorrhagic stroke). When brain cells die, they are no longer receiving oxygen and nutrients from blood, or there is sudden bleeding into the brain.

Act FAST

Everyone should be familiar with the signs of a stroke. You never know when your knowledge could save a life or keep someone from suffering permanent damage. The National Stroke Association suggests using the term "FAST" to check for stroke symptoms:

  • F = FACE: You may notice a droop or uneven smile.
  • A = ARMS: Arms may be weak or numb. If you suspect a stroke, ask the person to raise their arms. If the arm drops down or appears unsteady, the person may be having a stroke.
  • S = SPEECH: Slurred speech may indicate a stroke. Ask the person to repeat something to see how they respond.
  • T = TIME: This last part of the acronym is a warning to respond quickly if you think someone is having a stroke. Call 911 immediately.

Additional symptoms of a stroke

In addition to the above, a person who is experiencing a stroke may present any of these symptoms:

1. Fatigue

We all get tired from time to time, but fatigue after a stroke is something different. Strokes can cause you to feel like you have zero energy. Simple tasks like moving through your home may feel like running a marathon. If your fatigue makes it difficult to participate in everyday activities, seek care as soon as possible. It could be a sign of stroke and is certainly a sign that something is not right.

2. Numb limbs (especially on one side)

While your arms may feel numb – a key component of acting FAST – you may also feel numbness in one of your legs. If you find that you have numbness along one side of your body, you are probably having a stroke. Very few conditions would have this sort of effect, but your doctor will be able to tell you definitively.

3. Problems with vision

Contrary to popular belief, people who have experienced a stroke can usually still see out of both eyes. Instead of losing full sight in one eye, you're likely to lose the same field of vision (i.e., to the right side of your body) from both eyes. It implies that while your eyes and optic nerve are unaffected, a part of the brain that translates information from the optic nerve is damaged.

4. Dizziness

A stroke in the brain stem can cause dizziness and vertigo as well as severe imbalance problems — you literally can't walk straight even with a lot of concentration. The American Stroke Association notes that it's important to note that dizziness by itself isn't a sign of a stroke, but if any of these other symptoms accompany it, it's time to seek medical care immediately.

5. Problems with balance and walking

It can be particularly difficult to walk straight, even without dizziness, especially if you're experiencing numbness in one of your legs. So even though it doesn't feel like the room is spinning, if you find that you can't help but bump into things, trip over your own feet or have suddenly become clumsy, it's a sign you've had a stroke.

6. Severe headache

The key here is that the headache doesn't resemble a headache you've had in the past. So, if you have migraines, you're not necessarily having a stroke if you've got a headache that feels familiar. If it's accompanied by other symptoms, though, then seek medical attention right away.

7. Confusion

Confusion could be a sign of a right-brain stroke. If you notice yourself or a loved one confusing the sequence of events or tasks or misinterpreting information, it might be a sign of a stroke. You may also experience a decrease in problem-solving ability. People who have had a stroke also can act impulsively out of nowhere and experience difficulty comprehending that they're acting out of the norm.

8. Involuntary eye movements

During and after a stroke, you may experience involuntary eye movements and problems seeing in general. The Sheffield Teaching Hospitals ophthalmology department states that as many as 68 percent of stroke victims experience eye problems, including misalignment of one eye — one may drift inward, outward, up or down — rapid, involuntary eye movements, called nystagmus, and problems with their eyelids. If you've had a stroke, you might also experience blurred vision and a loss of depth perception.

9. Difficulty swallowing

Difficulty swallowing is most common after a stroke, but it might signal that a stroke has occurred and you need medical attention. Symptoms include struggling to swallow when drinking, eating or taking medicine. It may also be hard to breathe. A small piece of good news is this symptom usually decreases over time as you heal after your stroke.

10.. Muscle stiffness

If you experience numbness down one side of your body, you may also experience muscle stiffness during and after your stroke. Quite simply, a stroke can damage the brain in such a way that it also damages how signals travel between it and the body. After a stroke, there can be a very long recovery time during which you may deal with drop foot – your toes catch while walking – problems with stamina and moving for long periods of time, as well as spasms in the muscles. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention because you may have experienced a stroke without realizing it.

11. Problems reading or understanding speech

Not only can your speech slur if you've had a stroke, but your understanding of what words mean could be affected. If you've had a stroke in the left side of your brain — where our language center resides — you could have a difficulty understanding what words mean.

Women can have unique symptoms

In women, an upset stomach or vomiting may be a symptom of a stroke. In women, an upset stomach or vomiting may be a symptom of a stroke.

How Can You Prevent Night Cramps?

Do you ever go to sleep in your cozy bed after a hard day and wake up with unexpected and painful leg cramps? This phenomenon is called Nocturnal Leg Cramps and Dr. Lisa Shives, from the Northshore Sleep Medicine in Illinois, says it's actually a very normal and common thing.

Nocturnal leg cramps are sudden, involuntary contractions that occur during the night or during times of rest. The cramping sensation may last a few seconds or minutes, but the pain from the cramps may linger for a much longer period. Nocturnal leg camps tend to happen to middle-aged or older populations, but people of any age can have them.

The exact cause of nocturnal leg cramps is not known. Some cases can occur without a triggering event, while others may be linked to prolonged sitting, dehydration or structural disorders. Research shows that about one third of the population above the age of 60 suffers from these cramps, with 6% reporting that it happens every night.

Here are some of the things that may cause this painful problem according to Dr. Shives:

- Medical conditions such as blood disease, diabetes, and muscle disorders.
- Changes in the hormone state due to pregnancy and hormone pills.
-  A lack of calcium or a low ability to retain it in the body due to low levels of vitamin D.
- Weak and loose muscles that don't move during the day are more likely to cramp at night.
- Electrolyte imbalance caused by dehydration and not getting enough potassium and magnesium.

What can you do about it?

* Start by eating foods that have more potassium such as nuts, avocados, almonds and potatoes. Many people say that eating a banana before going to sleep prevents the cramps and the hard pains.

alt* Hot salt baths with Epsom salt for your feet will help relax your muscles and blood pressure.

* Get more exercises for your legs like evening walks and do some stretching before you go to sleep.

* Consider taking food supplements high on vitamin D, potassium and magnesium.

If none of these work and you still suffer from night cramps nearly every day then you should go see your doctor.

12 Heartburn and Stomach Ulcer Remedies

You would never think of tomatoes as being bad for you, but if you have stomach ulcers, they can actually make them worse. You'll truly be amazed at the other health foods you should avoid to prevent acid reflux from occurring. Before we discuss 12 natural home remedies for them, let's take a closer look at the causes and symptoms of stomach ulcers and heartburn:

What are Stomach Ulcers?

Many people confuse peptic ulcers with heartburn, but they are far from alike despite having similar symptoms. Ulcers consist of tiny open sores that develop on the inner lining of the stomach and small intestine, causing excruciating pain.

What Causes Stomach Ulcers?

Helicobacter pylori is the main bacteria infection that triggers stomach ulcers. Helicobacter pylori develops from certain medications, poor dietary lifestyle and stomach acid buildup.

What Are the Symptoms Associated with Stomach Ulcers?

The most common symptoms attributed to ulcers are burning pains that begin at the top of your chest, eventually reaching your midriff. You can also experience sharp pains that keep you awake at night. There are also pains that occur two to three hours after eating, which may provoke mild nausea. These pains generally go away after vomiting.

Foods and Beverages to Avoid with Stomach Ulcers:

  • Coffee - Coffee stimulates acid production and can cause severe indigestion problems.
  • Alcohol - Alcohol can irritate and erode the lining of the stomach and small intestine, triggering ulcers.
  • Spicy Foods - Certain peppers found in dishes, such as Mexican chili, can trigger heartburn in a flash. Avoid spicy foods as much as possible, because they stimulate acid reflux buildup and gastrointestinal pains.
What is Heartburn?

Heartburn occurs when stomach acid backs up in the esophagus and eventually reaches your throat area. Heartburn is a very unpleasant burning sensation that can truly leave a bad taste in your mouth. Almost one in five Americans experiences it.

What Causes Heartburn?

The common cause of heartburn is a lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, that doesn't contract regularly. Unhealthy foods are a major contributor to heartburn, especially foods that are deep-fried or cooked in grease.. Overeating can also cause acid reflux, due to the excess amount of pressure on the stomach.

What Are the Symptoms of Heartburn?

Symptoms of heartburn or acid reflux include a dry cough, a sore throat that causes difficulty swallowing, an increased burning sensation after digestion, and tasting acid or food in the back of your mouth. These symptoms intensify the moment you lay down.

Foods and Beverages to Avoid with Acid Reflux:

  • Citrus Fruits - Citrus fruits might be ideal for the common cold, but the acidity inside can cause heartburn, particularly on an empty stomach.
  • Garlic and Onions - Although both vegetables are essential for a healthy dietary intake, they also wreck havoc on people suffering from heartburn.
  • Carbonated Beverages - Carbonated beverages cause gastric distension, leading to acid reflux and indigestion. It's best to stay away from sodas and just drink mineral water instead.
5 Natural Treatments for Heartburn

1) Eating a Healthy Diet - There are many foods that are extremely good for you, but bad for your heartburn. Some of these foods include ground beef, sour cream, cottage cheese, onions, tomatoes, and citrus fruits. Make sure you avoid fried or greasy foods to prevent heartburn from occurring. Drink plenty of water between meals and skip the carbonated beverages altogether.

2) Enzymes and Probiotics - Probiotics are often referred to as the "good bacteria", since they promote healthy digestion. Probiotics minimize the growth of harmful bacteria and boost the immune system. Probiotics are available in supplement form, and help combat acid reflux. Take them together with hydrochloric acid or HCI enzyme supplement for smooth digestion.

3) Aloe Vera Juice - Aloe Vera juice has been known to treat acid reflux and other medical symptoms. It's advisable to drink a quarter of a cup of Aloe Vera approximately 20 minutes before a meal, or whenever you experience acid reflux. You can even mix Aloe Vera with tea or water if you don't like the basic taste of it. Do not drink Aloe Vera juice if you have diabetes, kidney failure or thyroid disease. Pregnant women and children should also avoid it.

4) Apple Cider Vinegar  - Apple cider vinegar is used to treat stomach acid buildup, as ironic as that may sound. The cider helps digestion by breaking down fats, despite the acidity factor. Mix one or two teaspoons of the apple cider vinegar with a glass of water and drink it before meals, or whenever you feel an acid reflux attack coming on.

5) Baking Soda - A little baking soda is all it takes to alleviate your acid reflux symptoms. You may not appreciate the bland taste, but you'll feel much better afterward. Mix half a teaspoon (or even a full one) of baking soda with a glass of water.

Natural Treatments for Stomach Ulcers
1) Cabbage Juice - Cabbage is packed with an abundance of natural anti-oxidant properties that help prevent stomach ulcers. Cabbage contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, E, K and folate, all essential for treating acid reflux and fighting cancer.

2) Zinc Carnosine - Zinc-Carnosine is used to treat stomach ulcers and other gastrointestinal problems. The function of the Zinc-Carnosine is to repair damaged tissues and heal ulcer wounds.

Recommended Dosage: Use for eight weeks, with a daily dose of 75mg in divided doses.

3) Probiotics - Probiotics improve intestinal functions and help fend off Helicobacter pylori. They are also used to prevent other gastric disorders, such as diarrhea and inflammatory bowel disease, from occurring.

Recommended Dosage: Take a probiotic of 1 to 2 million CFUs daily.

4) Glutamine - Glutamine significantly reduces the amount of inflammation brought on by a Helicobacter pylori infection. Glutamine supplements can be purchased at any local health store.

Recommended Dosage: Take 2 grams of glutamine daily for stomach ulcers.

5) Ginger Root - Ginger limits the harmful helicobacter pylori from acting up. Add several slices of fresh ginger roots to hot water, and drink the ginger mixture approximately 20 minutes or so before each meal for a quick soothing remedy.

6) Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice Powder (DGL) - DGL can work wonders for peptic ulcers. They protect the inner lining of your small intestine and stomach.

Recommended Dosage: Suggested dose is 200 to 400 mg daily dissolved in 200 ml warm water.

7) Astaxanthin - These powerful antioxidants help protect the gastrointestinal or GI tract and reduce symptoms of acid reflux. The free radical scavenging activity of astaxanthin also combats against Helicobacter pylori bacterial infection.

Recommended Dosage: Suggested daily dose is 40 mg.

Bonus Recipe: How to Prepare an Anti-Reflux Smoothie:

  • 1 cup diced fresh pineapple
  • 1 cup diced fresh papaya
  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup ice
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice or water
  • mix it all in a blender and drink.
