Dear Jayakrishnan,Recently I have visited Vatican. Nobody will ask you who are you or why you are there. You have to go through a Security check to Enter into St. Peter's Baslica and pay a fees to enter Sistine Chapel. You need an Italian or European visit visa to enter into Italy.

Even though I born in a Catholic family, I haven't heard of any such restrictions in visiting Vatican.People visit Vatican not only as a pilgrimage, but also to see, study, research and enjoy the huge amount of Renaissance artworks in St. Peter's basilica and Sistine chapel.
