The Natural Wonders of Green Tea

An old Chinese proverb says it is better to be without food for three days than one day without tea. It can be easily be categorized as another exotic Chinese phrase, but modern medicine has conducted thousands of researchers checking green tea out, and so everyone knows it's good for you, but who knows exactly WHY Green Tea is so good, and what is it good FOR?

The story of the tea began in the year 2,737 BC, and the legend tells of emperor Shun-Nung, the father of medicinal herbs, who discovered it by accident during a voyage. As he sat to boil the drinking water (as they did back then) and some tea leaves floated to the water, and painted it brownish-green. The emperor drank it and after enjoying the taste, he realized it had important medicinal properties.

In ancient China, green tea was used to cure infection, headaches, digestion problems, depression and cognitive impairment. Research conducted in modern times found that the green tea delays the onset of age, keeps teeth healthy, prevents inflammation and infection, help to counter sun damage and eye disease, and ever helps to delay Alzherimer's and parkinson's.

Green tea and its nutrients

All kinds of tea, be it black, green or oolong, comes from the camellia sinensis plant.

The color of the tea depends upon the amount of fermentation it has been through. Oolong tea is partially fermented, black tea is completely fermented and green tea is not fermented at all. It is produced by steaming fresh tea leaves at very high temperature. That tea is rich in antioxidants is a given, but green tea is known to contain large amounts of polyphenols, thearubigins, epicatechins and catechins - all types of an antioxidant known as flavanoids.

Green Tea And its Health Benefits:

Heart Healthy: Regular consumption of green tea has been known to reduce overall cholesterol levels, especially the bad LDL cholesterol which ultimately reduces the risk of heart attacks and heart diseases.

Fights cancer: Catechins present in green tea, are the flavanoids which fight free radicals that damage DNA and increase the risk of cancer.
Since green tea is not put through a whole lot of processing, catechins, especially  epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) are available in larger numbers.

Helps You Lose Weight: Can a simple activity like drinking green tea help

you lose weight? Recent studies show that catechins help combat accumulated fat and aid in weight loss. Experts say that this fat reducing property catechins can help in a number of lifestyle disease, including obesity.

Boosts Your immune System: The antioxidants in green tea help give your immune system a boost of good health which helps keep common ailments like the flu away.

Happy teeth: Catechins are also antibacterial, which is why they are so great in fighting tooth decay, gum diseases and bad breath.  Additionally, they also reduce the formation of plaque.

Prevents Diabetes:Preliminary studies show that green tea may help to prevent or at the very least, slow down the onset of diabetes. The same study also suggested that green tea acts a very good agent in lowering your blood sugar.

Improves Bone Health: Studies show that not only can drinking green tea help improve bone density and help reduce the  risk of a fracture, it also encourages bone formation.

Reduces The Risk Of Parkinson's & Alzheimers:
Research shows that polyphenols present in green tea helps in improving concentration, prevents memory loss and helps reduce the accumulation of brain damaging proteins in your body.

Great For Your Skin:
Not just as a drink, skin care products with green tea extracts are also wonderful for your skin as it helps your skin stay supple.
The antioxidants in green tea are also known to help keep wrinkles at bay.

List of Healthy Foods That Raise Serotonin Levels

Many foods boost serotonin levels naturally and can improve mood.
Many foods boost serotonin levels naturally and can improve mood.
Serotonin acts as a neurotransmitter, relaying signals from one area of the brain to another. Researchers believe that an imbalance in serotonin levels can cause depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic anxiety disorder and anger management issues. While certain antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications can raise serotonin levels in the brain -- and may well be essential for your ability to cope and function -- it's useful to recognize that foods containing certain vitamins and minerals can also give this important chemical a boost.

Foods Rich in Vitamin B Complex

Low levels of B vitamins, often referred to as "anti-stress" vitamins, may affect mood, anxiety and depression levels, cognitive function and memory, Natural News reported in the article, "Mood Food: Boost Serotonin Levels With Natural Treatments." The brain needs B vitamins to make neurotransmitters with a calming effect and serotonin. Cereals, whole grains, potatoes, pork, liver, kidney beans, chicken, wheat germ, bananas, peanuts, eggs, mushrooms, watermelon, grapefruit, shellfish and dairy products are all excellent sources of B vitamins.

Foods Rich in Essential Fatty Acids

Essential fatty acids make up every cell membrane and are vital for the brain's proper functioning, says Dr. Frank Sacks, professor of Cardiovascular Disease and Prevention at the Harvard School of Public Health. ALA -- alpha-linolenic acid -- is found in vegetable oils like canola and soybean, flaxseed and walnuts. Brussels sprouts, kale, spinach and salad greens are also rich sources of ALA. EPA, eicosapentaenoic acid, and DHA, docosahexanoic acid, can be found in fatty fish like salmon.

Foods Rich in L-Theanine

L-Theanine is an amino acid commonly found in green tea, which is believed to increase alpha waves in the brain, creating a feeling of relaxation, while maintaining mental alertness, Natural News wrote. It can improve the quality of your sleep -- without causing daytime drowsiness, a 2008 study in the "Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition" reported. Evidence from EEG readings showed that L-Theanine had a direct effect on the brain and relaxed the mind of study participants. Similarly, a 2010 study published in "Nutritional Neuroscience" found that a combination of L-Theanine and caffeine may improve alertness, while increasing the levels of serotonin and GABA, another calming neurotransmitter.

Foods Rich in Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral known to relax muscles and nerves, said Natural News. It increases energy levels and activates the B vitamins necessary for serotonin production. Almonds, spinach, cashews, soy milk, black beans, peanut butter, whole-wheat bread, avocado, potatoes baked with skin, cooked brown rice, raisins, apples and raw carrots are great sources of magnesium, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements.
