Green Tea for Weight Loss

If weight loss is one of your top health goals, green teamay help. Some studies show that substances in green tea may offer several weight-loss-promoting effects, such as speeding up your metabolism and suppressing your appetite. Although the antioxidant-rich brew won't help you shed pounds on its own, there's some evidence that drinking green tea may support your weight loss efforts.

How Might Green Tea Promote Weight Loss?

Green tea contains caffeine, which is known to increase thermogenesis (a biological process involved in burning calories). In a 2007 report from the American Journal of Physiology: Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, scientists state that green tea may fight the decrease in metabolism that typically accompanies weight loss. According to the report's authors, green tea may also inhibit the effects of catechol-O-methyltransferase (an enzyme known to trigger the breakdown of brain chemicals involved in regulating appetite).
Certain antioxidants found in green tea seem to have a "small positive effect" on weight loss and weight maintenance, according to a report published in the International Journal of Obesity in 2009. In their analysis of 11 studies on green tea and weight loss or weight maintenance, researchers found that green tea antioxidants known as catechins may help increase metabolism.
Still, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) caution that there isn't enough scientific evidence to determine whether green tea is effective for weight loss. However, epigallocatechin gallate (a catechin found in green tea) may help moderately overweight people lose weight, according to the NIH.

Caveats

While green tea is likely safe for most adults, drinking more than five cups a day may lead to caffeine-related side effects (such as headache, nervousness, sleep problems, and irregular heartbeat). The caffeine in green tea may also aggravate some health conditions, including anxietyhigh blood pressure, and diabetes.

Using Green Tea

For most adults, moderately increasing green tea intake may yield some weight loss benefits without causing negative health effects. But in order to experience significant weight loss, it's important to combine a healthy diet with regular exercise (including at least two and a half hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity and two strength-training sessions per week). If you're considering the use of green tea supplements (or any other natural weight loss aid), make sure to consult your physician before beginning treatment.

Mistakes that women often make while dieting

Do you feel like no matter what diet you try, you just don't seem to lose weight? Well that's probably because unknowingly you may be committing common diet mistakes as follows...

Going overboard with olive oil

In their quest to eat healthy, many women think that because olive oil has so many health benefits, even a generous amount is fine. Experts, however, caution that while olive oil boasts of benefits like having heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, flavonoid antioxidants and vitamin E, it also has its share of calories (120 calories and 14 grams of fat per tablespoon).

What to do:
Be cautious even while using olive oil. Measure out the oil before you use it so you can keep a track of your consumption.

Avoiding eating fruits

If you resist eating fruit by convincing yourself that it is laden with sugar and hence fattening, you're doing more harm than good. While fruits do have natural sugars, they also have good amount of essential vitamins, fibre and minerals that are known to make you feel full longer than regular snacks.

What to do:
Fruits like apples, strawberries, grapefruits and watermelons are tasty and healthy choices for those on a diet.

Going gluten-free without being allergic

You need to have a good enough reason to go gluten free. Don't just go for it because other people are following it or because your favourite celeb swears by it. A gluten-free diet is recommended for those who suffer from wheat-related bloating, which causes the Celiac disease. This is an autoimmune disorder where consuming wheat damages your small intestine. Hence, a gluten-free diet is only for those people who suffer from it, not for those wanting to lose weight. By eliminating whole grains and wheat flour, you're keeping your body away from essential foods.

What to do:
Include flax, millet and quinoa in your diet.

Barely eating and exercising for hours

If you think that by spending hours in the gym and cutting back drastically on your food intake will help you lose weight faster, you couldn't be more wrong. When you reduce your meals and food portions, your metabolism automatically slows down and losing weight becomes even harder. Even if you do lose those pounds, you will gain them back when you start eating regularly, thereby beating the very purpose of going on a diet.

What to do:
Ask a nutritionist what your daily food requirements need to be. How many calories should you have per day as per your body structure, weight, etc.

Achilles tendon rupture

Definition

Achilles (uh-KILL-eez) tendon rupture is an injury that affects the back of your lower leg. It most commonly occurs in people playing recreational sports.

The Achilles tendon is a strong fibrous cord that connects the muscles in the back of your calf to your heel bone. If you overstretch your Achilles tendon, it can tear (rupture) completely or just partially.

If your Achilles tendon ruptures, you might feel a pop or snap, followed by an immediate sharp pain in the back of your ankle and lower leg that is likely to affect your ability to walk properly. Surgery is often the best option to repair an Achilles tendon rupture. For many people, however, nonsurgical treatment works just as well.

Symptoms

Although it's possible to have no signs or symptoms with an Achilles tendon rupture, most people experience:
  • Pain, possibly severe, and swelling near your heel
  • An inability to bend your foot downward or "push off" the injured leg when you walk
  • An inability to stand on your toes on the injured leg
  • A popping or snapping sound when the injury occurs

When to see your doctor

Seek medical advice immediately if you feel a pop or snap in your heel, especially if you can't walk properly afterward.

Causes

Your Achilles tendon helps you point your foot downward, rise on your toes and push off your foot as you walk. You rely on it virtually every time you move your foot.
Rupture usually occurs in the section of the tendon located within 2 1/2 inches (about 6 centimeters) of the point where it attaches to the heel bone. This section may be predisposed to rupture because it gets less blood flow, which also may impair its ability to heal.
Ruptures often are caused by a sudden increase in the amount of stress on your Achilles tendon. Common examples include:
  • Increasing the intensity of sports participation, especially in sports that involve jumping
  • Falling from a height
  • Stepping into a hole

Risk factors

Factors that may increase your risk of Achilles tendon rupture include:
  • Age.. The peak age for Achilles tendon rupture is 30 to 40.
  • Sex. Achilles tendon rupture is up to five times more likely to occur in men than in women.
  • Recreational sports.. Achilles tendon injuries occur more often during sports that involve running, jumping, and sudden starts and stops — such as soccer, basketball and tennis.
  • Steroid injections. Doctors sometimes inject steroids into an ankle joint to reduce pain and inflammation. However, this medication can weaken nearby tendons and has been associated with Achilles tendon ruptures.
  • Certain antibiotics. Fluoroquinolone antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin (Cipro) or levofloxacin (Levaquin), increase the risk of Achilles tendon rupture.

Treatments and drugs

Treatment for a ruptured Achilles tendon often depends on your age, activity level and the severity of your injury. In general, younger and more active people often choose surgery to repair a completely ruptured Achilles tendon, while older people are more likely to opt for nonsurgical treatment. Recent studies, however, have shown fairly equal effectiveness of both operative and nonoperative management.

Nonsurgical treatment

This approach typically involves wearing a cast or walking boot with wedges to elevate your heel, which allows your torn tendon to heal. This method avoids the risks associated with surgery, such as infection. However, the likelihood of re-rupture may be higher with a nonsurgical approach, and recovery can take longer. If re-rupture occurs, surgical repair may be more difficult.

Surgery

The procedure generally involves making an incision in the back of your lower leg and stitching the torn tendon together. Depending on the condition of the torn tissue, the repair may be reinforced with other tendons. Surgical complications can include infection and nerve damage. Infection rates are reduced in surgeries that employ smaller incisions.

Rehabilitation

After treatment, whether surgical or nonsurgical, you'll go through a rehabilitation program involving physical therapy exercises to strengthen your leg muscles and Achilles tendon. Most people return to their former level of activity within four to six months.

To reduce your chance of developing Achilles tendon problems, follow these tips:
  • Stretch and strengthen calf muscles. Stretch your calf to the point at which you feel a noticeable pull but not pain. Don't bounce during a stretch. Calf-strengthening exercises can also help the muscle and tendon absorb more force and prevent injury.
  • Vary your exercises. Alternate high-impact sports, such as running, with low-impact sports, such as walking, biking or swimming. Avoid activities that place excessive stress on your Achilles tendons, such as hill running and jumping activities.
  • Choose running surfaces carefully. Avoid or limit running on hard or slippery surfaces. Dress properly for cold-weather training and wear well-fitting athletic shoes with proper cushioning in the heels.
  • Increase training intensity slowly. Achilles tendon injuries commonly occur after abruptly increasing training intensity. Increase the distance, duration and frequency of your training by no more than 10 percent each week.
