Why Dark Chocolate Is So Damn Good For You
From improving heart health to alleviating the effects of depression, dark chocolate is renowned for its remarkable health benefits. A recent study now points to one of the reasons why — and it has to do with dark chocolate's unique chemistry, plus the microbes in our stomach who find it equally delicious.
How awesome is it that dark chocolate, in addition to being tasty, is so incredibly healthy? It's good for your heart and brain. It's full of antioxidants (which reduces oxidative stress to cells),theobromine (which can harden tooth enamel), and various vitamins and minerals (such as iron, potassium, copper, and magnesium). It can also help you reduce your blood pressure, ease depressioncontrol your blood sugar and lose weight (but you should keep your dark chocolate t0 >85%, people).
Eating chocolate could actually help you lose weight

The precise reasons for these health benefits are many, but a new study presented at a recent meeting of the American Chemical Society explains much of it. Research shows that certain bacteria in our stomach consume dark chocolate and ferment it into anti-inflammatory compounds that are good for our hearts.
According to the researchers, the "good" bacteria in our guts — such as Bifidobacterium and lactic acid bacteria — feast on chocolate. The resulting compounds, or bi-products, are absorbed by our body, lessen the inflammation of cardiovascular tissue, which can reduce the long-term risk of stroke and heart disease. This study, conducted by researchers at Louisiana State University, was the first to look at the effects of dark chocolate on various types of bacteria in our stomach.
In terms of the exact chemistry involved, cocoa powder contains several polyphenolic, or antioxidant, compounds such as catechin and epicatechin, and a small amount of dietary fiber. Once they reach the colon, the microbes take over. The fiber is fermented and the large polyphenolic polymers are converted into a smaller, more easily absorbable form.
These findings were recently presented at the 247th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and will appear in an upcoming paper titled, "Impact of the microbiome on cocoa polyphenolic compounds."

-  7 Recent Conclusions About Stress
Stress is one of the biggest problems we have to deal with in modern life. It's everywhere, and many don't realize how much damage daily stress might be doing to them.
It's all well and good to eat right, get enuogh sleep and exercise, but when it comes to mental hardship people will shrug it off, thinking it won't have an impact on their health.
Here are 7 recent conclusions about stress you should know about:

Stress at work is bad for the body
A review of relevant research conducted last September, officially identified a strong connection between stress at work and a bigger likelihood to get a heart attack. The review, performed by researches of the College University of London, shows that there is a strong correlation between overworking and a 23% increased chance of a heart attack. Another research published this last year in the Journal for occupational medicine, found that stress at work can cause specific harm to women by increasing their chances of diabetes.

A Smile is Stress Medicine
A real, honest smile, one that uses both the eye and mouth muscles, may help decrease the heart rate after a stressful even. So found research published in Psychological Science.
"Next time you are stuck in traffic or experience any other type of stress, you can try and put a smile on your face," says the main researcher from the University of Kansas, Sarah Paseman. "Not only will it help you cope psychologically, it will actually contribute to the health of your heart."

The link between stress and stressful situations
It turns out that not only can stress alone cause health problems, but even thinking about stress! This from research conducted at the University of Ohio. Researchers found that when a person is asked to think about a stressful event, the levels of C protein, a protein known to deal with inflammation, rise and may cause inflammation themselves.
Similarly, research published in the American Journal of Cardiology showed that a perception of stress can affect health quite significantly. Specifically, researchers from the medical center of Colombia University found that people who believe they are stressed have a higher chance of suffering heart conditions.

Chronic tension may increase the risk of diabetes among men
Being in a state of constant stress is linked to the risk of suffering diabetes among men. This from research published in Diabetic Medicine. Swedish researchers spent 35 years examining the link between ongoing stress at work or home to period pressures or a lack of stress altogether. They found that among those that reported ongoing stress, they had a 45% bigger chance of getting Type 2 diabetes. This in comparison to those who reported temporary stress or no stress at all. The study included 7000 men and took into account other risk factors, such as blood pressure, age and physical activity.

Meditation to increase awareness can be key
A study conducted by the University of California shows that ongoing practice of Mindfulness Meditation (meditation that focuses on the present) can significantly reduce the levels of the stress hormone (cortisol). Findings were published in the Journal of Health Psychology.

Another research, published in the PLos ONE Journal, found that work stress may, in fact, quicken the pace of aging. Researchers found a close link between work stress and short telemeters (the edges of chromosomes that are linked to a person's aging process, the shorter – the shorter the life span usually).

The millennium generation is the most stressed out generation
The millennium is apparently the worst at dealing with stress. So says a large survey performed by the American Union of Psychologists and was published last August. The survey showed that people ages 18-33 experienced an average stress level of 5.4 (on a 1-10 scale) compared to an average national was 4.8..
According to researchers, the largest causes of stress since the millennium are job instability and work-related issues. It found that 39% of the millennium generation admitted that their levels of stress have gone up in the past year. Also, research shows that they experienced a lot more agitation, anger, anxiety and depression when compared to previous generations.

Stress causes Inflammation
Researchers from Carnegie University found that in the long range, stress can harm the ability of the body to resist inflammation, which increases the likelihood of suffering infections. The researchers believe that when a person is stressed, the cells of the immunity system cannot respond to hormone control, and so there is an increased risk of suffering inflammation, which promotes illnesses such as heart conditions, asthma and autoimmune diseases.

Fascinating Information about the Human Brain
The human brain is the single most complex thing in the known universe. Even in this time of medical wonders, we still have not been able to uncover the full secrets of this incredible organ. However, we do know some things about the most important organ in the body, and here are some interesting ones you should definitely know about:

1. The belief that humans only use 10% of their brains is incorrect. Each part of the brain has a specific function and the average person uses all the various parts of the brain.

2. Have you ever had such a headache it felt like your brain is going to explode? That's not actually your brain hurting, because the brain has no pain receptors at all. Mother nature assumes you don't need it because it's never exposed (thankfully) and is usually protected by our thick skull.

3.You must think that your buttocks are the fattiest part of the body, but it is, in fact, the brain with the highest% of  the body, about 60% of it is fat.

4. The brain has a texture similar to tofu, and enough liquid to fill a 2 liter (half a gallon) tank.

5. Thought creates 'pathways' that connect different parts of the brain. The more we repeat a thought, the more that pathway will become more central, wide and stable. That is why it is important not to think over and over about negative things, because they become permanent, and strong, pathways in your mind, and the chances are will force themselves on you more and more.

6. We think about 70,000 thoughts a day. A large part of these are 'automatic' thoughts that we repeat a lot, using our most 'established' thought pathways.

7. Most people dream about 4-7 dreams a night. 50% of those dreams are forgotten in the first minutes after waking. And the one we remember is usually one we were either just dreaming or a mix of all the dreams we had put together. No wonder they always seem so confusing.

8. Sleep is usually the time the brain uses to organize and put together the memories is accumulated throughout the day. And so, in many cases, before making big decisions it's better to 'sleep on it'.

9. The messages between the various brain cells (neurons) are passed in the form of weak electrical pulses. The brain creates 23 watts of electricity while awake, enough to light a lightbulb.

10. While we laugh, about 5 areas lit up in the brain simultaneously. So it's no laughing matter, laughing.

11. The reason tickling makes us laugh is that the brain becomes 'surprised' by this kind of touch, which is first interpreted as a threat. The uncontrollable laughter is actually a panic response by the body. That is why it's not possible to tickle ourselves.

12. The human brain has more 'wrinkles' and crevices than those of other animals. In this way, the brain gets more surface space while staying at around the same size, and it is part of the reason for our increased intelligence.

13. Brain cells (neurons) are not only found in the brain but exist everywhere in the body the brain needs to send orders to, and all of them are connected to the brain.

14. Some archaeological findings think that our cranium has gotten smaller over the ages, but that doesn't mean our brain has become less powerful, only more efficient (see #12).

15. The brain alone uses 20% of all the oxygen we breathe and over 25% of the sugar we consume. Meaning, deep thoughts might cost the body resources just like sports can. Who said chess players are not athletes too?

16. The female and male sexual hormones cause a different brain to develop. Studies have found siginificant difference in the brain functions of male and female during social situations, decision making, pressure situations and more.

17. The brain isn't fully developed until the teen years are over. Multitasking, showing empathy and good decision making are some of the skills that develop a little later. This, we're sure you'll agree - explains A LOT.

18. The brain is constantly changing. Damage to one part of it may cause that part to change to a different location in the brain, especially if you are a baby or a child. Beyond that, every thought, experience or skill we encounter and learn changes the structure of our brain.

19. Memories aren't built in a linear progression. We only remember 'pictures' or moments, and we put together a story from them ourselves. That is why it's tricky to trust your memory, because you may have done some 'editing' without knowing it.

Fat Burning Foods

fat burning foodsThis article will make every girl's dream come true. According to Janet Starr Hull, there are certain foods that burn fat before it can before it can be stored in the body. Hence, calories in fatty foods are reduced. This is also because the amount of calories required to digest these foods is more than the amount of calories you gain eating these foods. So read on and eat your way to a thinner and fitter you!

Fruits

Fruits are an excellent fat burning food as majority of them are low in calories and contain a lot of fiber. Fiber helps to burn fat in 3 ways: it helps in speeding up your metabolism, aids in slowing down digestion and helps in extending a person's energy. Due to this reason, you can combine them with fatty foods like cheese and meats to prevent weight gain. Apples, oranges, limes, grapefruit, tangerines, raspberries, grapefruit, blueberries and guava are an excellent source of fiber. Moreover, eating watermelon eliminates toxins from the body and removes excess water. Have it when you feel bloated or have consumed high sodium foods.

Vegetables

Most vegetables contain some form of natural fiber.. It is of two types: soluble fiber and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber forms a gel in the digestive tract while being digested. This gel not only requires energy to be digested but also helps you to stay full longer. Vegetables rich in soluble fiber include carrots, artichokes, eggplant, broccoli, tomatoes and celery. On the other hand, insoluble fiber moves quickly through the digestive tract taking waste and toxins along with it. Eating these foods when you're feeling overfull or constipated helps relieve these symptoms and burn excess calories. The vegetables which contain insoluble fiber are spinach, mustard greens, kale, green beans, legumes, Brussells sprouts and cabbage. You can reduce the gas caused by some of these foods by cooking them.

Proteins

Most of the fat burning sources of protein is found in seafood. Fish and shellfish are the two sources of protein that require a lot of energy to burn. One 4 oz. fillet of tilapia has 93 calories and four large shrimp have 22 calories all together. However, there are other types of protein that are fat burning. These include crabs, clams, mussels, lobsters, oysters, shrimp, sea bass and flounder. Team one of these up with a fat burning vegetable cabbage or spinach to create a healthy meal.
Additionally, there are quite a few foods which are high in protein that help burn belly fat. These are both vegetarian and non vegetarian options to choose from. Lentils, broccoli, kidney beans, corn and baked potatoes are all excellent sources of protein. If you prefer non-vegetarian food, then there is an array of meats to choose from such as lean hamburger, fish, tuna, broiled beef steak and roasted chicken. Plenty of other foods such as dairy products, rice, whole wheat bread, eggs and tofu also contain significant amounts of protein. Mix and match the ingredients while cooking to get the best results. The key is to make sure that your sources of protein are lean and very low in fat.
Follow these tips and experience the difference fat burning foods can make!
