അമേരിക്കയിലെ മരണത്തണുപ്പ്‌
വാഷിങ്ടണ്‍: രണ്ട് ദശാബ്ദത്തിനിടെയുള്ള ഏറ്റവും രൂക്ഷമായ തണുപ്പിലും ശീതക്കാറ്റിലും അമേരിക്ക തണുത്തുവിറയ്ക്കുന്നു. അമേരിക്കയുടെ മധ്യ, വടക്കന്‍ മേഖലകളില്‍ താപനില -51 ഡിഗ്രി സെല്‍ഷ്യസിലേക്ക് താണു. കൊടുംതണുപ്പില്‍ മരിച്ചവരുടെ എണ്ണം 16 ആയി. 3,700 വിമാനങ്ങള്‍ റദ്ദാക്കിയതായും 7,300 സര്‍വീസുകള്‍ മണിക്കൂറുകളോളം വൈകിയതായും അധികൃതര്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. പലയിടത്തും മഞ്ഞുവീണ് റോഡ് ഗതാഗതവും തടസ്സപ്പെട്ടു.
അമേരിക്കയിലും കാനഡയിലും ഹിമക്കാറ്റ് ആഞ്ഞുവീശുകയാണ്. അമേരിക്കയുടെ വടക്ക് കിഴക്കന്‍ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും കാനഡയിലും 60 സെന്‍റീമീറ്റര്‍ വരെ കട്ടിയുള്ള മഞ്ഞുകട്ടകളാണ് പെയ്യുന്നത്.
കാനഡയിലെ ക്യബെക് നഗരത്തില്‍ താപനില -38 ഡിഗ്രി സെല്‍ഷ്യസ് ആയി കുറഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ ടൊറന്റൊയില്‍ ഇത് -29 വരെയെത്തി.
അമേരിക്കയില്‍ ഭൂരിഭാഗം സ്‌കൂളുകളും ഓഫീസുകളും അടച്ചു. സുരക്ഷ മുന്‍നിര്‍ത്തി ജനങ്ങളോട് വീട്ടില്‍നിന്ന് പുറത്തിറങ്ങരുതെന്ന് സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് നല്‍കി.
ഇന്ധനംനിറയ്ക്കാന്‍ പോലും കഴിയാത്തതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് വിമാനസര്‍വീസുകള്‍ അനിശ്ചിതമായി വൈകുകയാണ്. ഇന്ധനം നിറയ്ക്കാന്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ഉപകരണങ്ങള്‍ തണുത്തുറഞ്ഞുപോയതും പ്രതിസന്ധി രൂക്ഷമാക്കി. ഒ ഹാരെ വിമാനത്താവളത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് മാത്രം 1600 വിമാന സര്‍വീസുകള്‍ റദ്ദാക്കി. മിഡ്‌വെ വിമാന ഷെഡ്യൂളുകളില്‍ 200 എണ്ണം റദ്ദാക്കി. തിങ്കളാഴ്ച 17 മണിക്കൂര്‍ നേരമാണ് വിമാനസര്‍വീസുകള്‍ നിലച്ചത്.
1994-ല്‍ ആണ് ഇതിന് മുന്‍പ് മേഖലയില്‍ കൊടുംതണുപ്പും കനത്ത മഞ്ഞുവീഴ്ചയുമുണ്ടായതെന്ന് അമേരിക്കന്‍ കാലാവസ്ഥവിഭാഗം അധികൃതര്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. അന്ന് താപനില -60 ഡിഗ്രി സെല്‍ഷ്യസ് വരെ എത്തിയിരുന്നു.
