"A prince never lacks legitimate reasons to break his promise" – Nicolo Machiavelli

(Me:  Not just a prince, but just everyone else as well – that all includes all legal entities like the Governments, corporate, individuals, etc.)

I had a badly soiled 500-rupee note and a local co-operative bank had advised that I go to the State Bank of India in our suburb to get it exchanged.   The branch was located in the business area and quite away from the place I live in, so I decided to have it done when I had some other work in the area.  I could make it to the bank yesterday and on advice, when I approached the designated officer, the bored guy informed me the branch doesn't do it and directed me to a branch in a nearby suburb and also mentioned a prominent landmark to enable me to locate the address easily.

This morning I went to the branch, which lay more than 2kms away from the landmark he had mentioned.   The customer 'service manager' expressed the branch's inability to exchange the note, its condition being what it was, giving me a lecture-bazi on why the bank doesn't exchange such note and volunteered the further gratis advice that I go to RBI's HQ located in South Mumbai for this purpose.  Considering the distance, time and cost involved in making the trip, I decided to forget about the money.

However, on my way home, I dropped in at a private bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, who were also my bankers, where I had some other work, and enquired of an executive whether the bank would exchange my note.  The executive had a cursory glance at the note and at once instructed the cashier to exchange it.

From my previous experience, too, I knew SBI rarely bothered about being customer-friendly.  If customers flock to the bank in hordes it is only because it being a government-backed nationalized bank, your money is safe.  Knowing full well that most customers have no other alternative, the employees of SBI  – as also those of all other nationalized banks  – go on wildcat strikes to extract their pound of flesh in monetary terms, customers be damned.  Nationalized bank employees and government servants in India have scant regard for their annadatas – their providers – who actually bankroll their fat pay and perks.

Police standoff with stabbing suspect resolved by sharks…

He was caught between a cop and shark place.  Authorities at Palm Beach, Florida have credited sharks with helping to end a standoff between a stabbing suspect and the police.  After stabbing his former girlfriend and her new boyfriend, Paul Charles, in his id 20s, was seen running towards Palm Beach, holding a knife to his own chest and shouting he was going to commit suicide.  A four-hour standoff between Charles and police ensued, during about half of which the suspect was standing waist-deep in the ocean.  By the end of the standoff, the suspect became aware that he had gained attention of multiple spinner sharks…

Quote of the day…

"Voting in India has been largely based on the caste and communal lines.  This is a backward country" – Markandey Katju, former judge and currently Press Council of India chairman.

(Comment: some people allege he is more of a funster who often talks through his hit.  This time however he has hit the bull's eye.  Although many Indian worthies wah-wah it, one would say that the kind of democracy we follow or practise is ill-suited to our genius, the illiterate masses voting by consideration alone, seldom by their merit)
