Beyond the moral issues, it is also a business like any other business where there are 3 elements namely Supplier, Product/Service and Customer. We are talking about the first two; suppliers in the form of pimps including small pimps to huge boss pimps and the unfortunate women/their body.
What about the customer? The customer is very much a part of what you have mentioned as 'the pseudo-moralists' community. This end of the supply chain really determines the market demand and supply. So if the last brothel is shutdown, those women are rehabilitated to different profession and all pimps are thrown behind the bars, then what will happen? The customer is still waiting for his prey. This is where the bigger evil comes in place. A new generation of pimps will come up who will abduct girls from all possible places and sell them to these customers. While I am presenting this as a hypothesis, do not forget the fact that this is already a ground reality at least in Kerala.
This can't be addressed by mere moral talks. As long as boys are not morally educated from their childhood, there is no hope for this. The morals that our modern humanity has widely accepted in general, beyond any specific religions…What about the customer? Great observations. Let me draw your attention to one of the book I read long back.
'super freakonomics' it's the second part of much acclaimed 'freakonomics' . It's worth reading for all of us armchair bloggers. It's just the economics of everyday life where all logic is hidden in basic human instinct.
There is a chapter on prostitution, where an indian journalist get into a famous red street in America in disguise and studied the system for years. His findings were first hand unlike others as he was part of the system. He studied the prostitutes, their families, pimps and the police.
If I indianise his findings
1. Rehabilitation of a prostitute is highly difficult as tendency for quick and easy money is ingrained in their minds, majority move back to their old profession in no time. Its a phenomenon faced by all those rehabilitation centres as many would elope from there, leaving behind some old prostitutes who knew they are out of business and has nowhere to go.
Consider our jobs too. What if an accountant is posted on the job of shift supervisor on a fine morning?. I agree that gradual change is the key. But could someone be blamed for her choice of profession at any point of time. Can we force someone for that in a democratic setup?
2. Regarding the pimps and other exploiters. The practical problem lies with the established system in red streets. In this market their presence is inevitable to avoid external interference to this almost closed system(we ourselves closed them from us and considered them as outcast). Muscle power is the only form of protection for this world of unhindered basic human instinct.
If the police destroy a network of established pimps and their leader, there would be a bloodshed for the leadership with rival gangs, with further atrocities. From experience, police take this hands-off approach.
What if our police is given a 'free hand' in one fine morning? All these elements are out on street one fine morning to our neighbourhood. The neighbourhood of us 'the pseudo-moralists'.

Dear Mr Ansar,While I appreciate your analysis by going thro the history of this unholy profession, I think what Mr. MK is expressing is the concern of an ordinary human being who gives value for a high morale life and of one who couldnt stand the suffering of another.Your analysis that this is a an unavoidable evil and have its origin from Day 1 of earths existance is all accepted but , What have1) The Govt done to wipe out this eveil2) The so called Human right activist.3) The woman's liberation association or such like that.They are all mum on this Mr Ansar.If Bombay police is given a free hand they will close the kamatti pura ( red street area) within No time. The Tugs and the Goondas have political back up.Most of the inmates are cheated by the tugs/ Goondas or by other ladies who are in the profession. It's there in one form or another even in the most conservative countries in the world.The evil of prostitution lies in the societal view on prostitutes. But the erstwhile red streets offered security for girls.Not anymore.in absence of an organised setup, They are susceptible to STD's n they were unprotected from violent fetish customers for its risky for a girl to handle an unruly customer.In a democratic market economy like ours, the only solution for problem is to reduce the supply of unwilling and child prostitute to the sex market. This could be done only through reducing poverty of the masses and strict population control.
