There are many more to add to this. iam quoting from my school and collage days that is late 60s and early 70s. a) Palghat trivandrum fast passenger bus leaves at palghat at 6 am with full pax load. after issuing tkts and running about 30 to 35 kms, the ribbon ( Naada) which hold bell from the conductor seat to drivers used to signal stop and start get cut due long time usage. The bus is stopped and all the paxs on the road. The conductor could have put a knot and proceeded but the rule dont permit to do so. Conductor phone up alleppy depot( since the bus belong to that depot) Declare break down and waiting for a new thread to reach which normally takes 3 days since the request has to be ma b) TVM/cannanore express ready to take off from TVM bus stand and inspite of the conductor ringing the bell, driver dont start becos both of them belong to different and rivalary trade unions. Have you every thought of the reason why KSRTC is incurring loss? And all other private buses in Kerala are running with high profit..! well we have to just study the structure and organisation of KSRTC. The decisions, including appointments, are mainly influenced by the Unions, and the Unions affiliated to various political parties including that of Shri R.Balakrishna Pillai. 2. KSRTC is a Trivandrum based private company, mainly operated for the benefit of big, medium and small BABUS (bueaurocrats). 3. Routes are allotted and operated without studying its financial viability (we call it a 'public transport system' meant for the society, without profit motive)!!! 4. You can see a number of buses in Trivandrum City plying with the board 'STUDENTS ONLY" "LADIES ONLY" etc. There will be long Q s of buses in front of ALL SAINTS' COLLEGE, TRIVANDRUM in the morning and afternoon to pick up and drop "LADIES ONLY" from this LADIES ONLY COLLEGE to various parts of the city. Similarly hundreds of buses can be seen plying with "students only" board to all the private and govt. schools in the morning and evening...!! You can imagine what will be the return from such buses. Naturally there will be heavy losses. Apart from Trivandrum I have not seen this arrangement anywhere else in Kerala. And the loss of KSRTC is 'written off' with the tax money of all Keralites..!! If this can be stopped and the ratio of employees per bus could be brought down as in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, all losses will disappear. Somebody should bell the cat. Earlier there was a good proposal to bifurcate KSRTC into 2 or 3 separate companies, but the 'political and beaurocratic bosses' did not agree to it for obvious reasons. Now the question is WHO WANTS THIS "WHITE ELEPHANT" TO BE MAINTAINED INCURRING SUCH HEAVY LOSSES? No one will lose the job if KSRTC is bifurcated into 2/3/4 companies and we can see each company making profits. so please don't waste your tears for this white elephant. Of course, KSRTC and all the State Transport Undertakings throughout India need to be run on profitable lines. For that all must co-operate. Employees should realise that they survive because of the Company and not the other way round. If the Organisation closes employees will be the ones to be out of job first. In Kerala there should be change of heart. People should shun Unions which work for their own advancement and not that of the employees. When this realisation dawns then only you will see marked improvement in the services and health of the Organisation.
By the way what makes one to think that Tamil Nadu Road Transport Corporation is run on profitable lines. In our country no Govt. Organisation or Department is run on profitable lines. It may take Centuries to change the mindset of Govt. employees. As long as there is Special consideration in Recruitment/Promotion,Job Security/Good Perquisites/Pension etc. Govt. employees will continue to behave the way they do. Besides they also enjoy the benefit of under the table greasing of palms ( or is it across the table nowadays). There is no punctuality,
or discipline and no work ethics at all from top to bottom.
Unless the age old Govt. Laws are changed we will not to able to see any improvement.
Stricter Recruitment/Promotion Polices coupled with time bound performance based promotions can be tried. There should be no special considerations in Recruitment/Promotion and all must compete equally.

I fully agree with the suggestions put forth by Mr. Binu Mathew. Now KSRTC is plying in the way that it is not meant for passengers, they are just doing their duty of plying from one stop to another without giving any consideration that the passengers are waiting and they should stop and take them along, how it will run in profit, no maintenance are carried out periodically, even tyres are not replaced in time. The private vehicles makes profit and KSRTC is always in loss what is the magic in this. If they stop the Corporation due to loss, it will be a great relief on the Treasury which is spending crores of Rupees for KSRTC.
